Metal Halide Perovskites Demonstrate Radiation Hardness and Defect Healing in Vacuum

Herein, we subject formamidinium lead iodide films to oxygen-containing gases (flowing O 2 or free diffusion of lab atmosphere), inert gases (flowing He, Ar, or N 2 ), and vacuum. Our films are irradiated by Cu Ka X-rays and held at 75 °C while X-ray diffraction is recorded. Under all gas conditions, we observe a reproducible 1.1 ± 0.5 A 3 perovskite lattice contraction from an initial unit cell volume of 256.5 ± 0.8 A 3 concurrent with continuous perovskite loss and lead iodide growth. Oxygen-containing gases increase the reaction rates without materially altering perovskite structural changes. Under the same temperature and irradiation conditions in vacuo, a self-healing reaction is observed, exhibited by a reproducible (0.9 ± 0.3 A 3 ) lattice expansion and stabilization of the perovskite. Furthermore, interactions between the perovskite, defects, and minority phases are simulated by generalized gradient approximation Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) density functional theory. Lattice contraction indicates an increase in the concentration of Schottky defects-pairs of formamidinium and iodine vacancies. Under irradiation in every atmospheric condition, a solid solution of Schottky defects with a concentration of several percent diffuses and precipitates forming lead iodide and consuming the defects. In the presence of ionized gases, this framework is modified to include the continual loss of formamidinium and iodine ions from the perovskite forming Schottky defects.

Selective Removal of Barium and Hardness Ions from Brackish Water with Chemically Enhanced Electrodialysis

The use of a nonconventional water resource for energy and industrial applications often requires extraction of low-level undesirable ions from matrices of benign dominant ions. In this study, the selective extraction of Ba 2+ and Mg 2+ from synthetic brine solutions was evaluated using strong acid cation-exchange membranes modified with the surface deposition of macrocyclic molecules including crown ethers and calixarenes. Compared to the bare membrane, vinylbenzo-18-crown-6 (VB18C6) and calix[4]arene-amended membranes showed increased selectivity for Ba 2+ and Mg 2+ with respect to the dominant ion (Na + ) by up to fourfolds, with the calix[4]arene-modified membrane achieving more selective separation than VB18C6. Optimal selectivity was achieved at a moderate-to-high current density (3.1–6.3 mA/cm 2 ), which was attributed to the alleviation of transport limitation in the boundary layer by the surface modification. Amendment of a calix[4]arene derivative with a crown-6 “boot strap” and two carboxylic groups resulted in reduced selectivity due to the formation of strong complexes with divalent ions. Furthermore, these results show that surface deposition of ion sequestrants can be a versatile approach to improve the membrane’s selectivity; however, the performance is sensitive to feed water salinity, current loading, and the macrocycle-ion chemistry, where there is a trade-off between ion affinity and mobility.

Chloride Reduction of Mn 3+ in Mild Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Charge Ordered Defect Pyrochlore, CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 , a Canted Antiferromagnet with a Hard Ferromagnetic Component

Geometrically frustrated systems play an important role in studying new physical phenomena and unconventional thermodynamics. Charge ordered defect pyrochlores AM 2+ M 3+ F 6 offer a convenient platform for probing the interplay between electron distribution over M 2+ and M 3+ sites and structural distortions; however, they are limited to compounds with M 2+/3+ = V, Fe, Ni, and Cu due to difficulties in the simultaneous stabilization of other 3d elements in the +2 and +3 oxidation states. Herein, we employ Cl– anions under hydrothermal conditions for the mild reduction of Mn 2 O 3 in concentrated HF to obtain the CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 composition as a phase pure sample and study its properties. The magnetism of CsMn 2 F 6 was characterized by measuring the magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization data, and a magnetic transition to a canted antiferromagnet state was found at 24.1 K. We determined the magnetic structure of CsMn 2 F 6 using powder neutron diffraction, which revealed successive long-range ordering of the Mn 2+ and Mn 3+ sites that is accompanied by a second transition. As a result, the role and strength of magnetic exchange interactions were characterized using DFT calculations.

Inverse Trans Influence and Uranium-Arene σ-Bonding Drive Molecular Geometry: Ligand Modification from Hard to Soft Flips the Oxide from Axial to Equatorial

A rare example of an equatorially bound terminal uranium(V) oxo complex in a chelating sulfur-based ligand environment, namely [(mes( Me,Ad ArS) 3 )U V (O eq )(THF)] (2), is presented. Octahedrally coordinated 2 is obtained by reaction of the mesitylene-anchored tris-thiophenolate-coordinated uranium(III) complex [U III ((SAr Ad,Me ) 3 mes)] (1) with the oxygen-atom transfer reagent N 2 O. The observed, equatorially bound oxo ligand in 2 is in stark contrast to its known tris-aryloxide analog, [(mes( Me,Ad ArO) 3 )U V (O ax )(THF)] (A), where the oxo ligand occupies the typically observed axial coordination site. Complexes 1 and 2 are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and spectroscopic and magnetochemical methods, including 1 H NMR, UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption, as well as EPR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry, thus confirming the C S symmetry and the pentavalent oxidation state of 2. Encompassing quantum chemical calculations (DFT and CASPT2) on 2 and its tris-phenolate analog A, support and rationalize the structural and electronic differences. The molecular orbital pictures show that a stabilizing σ-bonding interaction arising from the U–O eq inverse trans influence (ITI) is present in 2 but missing in A. In 2, the sulfur 3p orbitals are closer in energy to the uranium 5f manifold than the arene π-system, leading to an ITI, while U–arene σ- or δ-bonding is not observed. Although the arene orbitals remain separated from the uranium 5f orbitals in A, the absence of an ITI allows the arene a 2u orbital to engage in a σ-type interaction with the metal. Thus, incorporating a tris-thiophenolate to an arene anchor introduces a new design concept in molecular f-element chemistry. This approach stabilizes an equatorially bound U(V) oxo center, contrasting with its tris-phenolate counterpart, where oxo coordination is axial. The observed geometric divergence, driven by competing ITI and U–arene interactions, not only tunes electronic structure but also leads to differentiated reactivity: only the phenolate analogs activate H 2 O, while the thiolates do not.

Spectral Hardness of X- and Gamma-Ray Emissions From Lightning Stepped and Dart Leaders

During the 2022 New Mexico monsoon season, we deployed two X-ray scintillation detectors, coupled with a 180 MHz data acquisition system to detect X-rays from natural lightning at the Langmuir Lab mountain-top facility, located at 3.3 km above mean sea level. Data acquisition was triggered by an electric field antenna calibrated to pick up lightning within a few km of the X-ray detectors. We report the energies of over 240 individual photons, ranging between 13 keV and 3.8 MeV, as registered by the LaBr3(Ce) scintillation detector. These detections were associated with four lightning flashes. Particularly, four-stepped leaders and seven dart leaders produced energetic radiation. Importantly, the reported photon energies allowed us to confirm that the X-ray energy distribution of natural stepped and dart leaders follows a power-law distribution with an exponent ranging between 1.09 and 1.96, with stepped leaders having a harder spectrum. Characterization of the associated leaders and return strokes was done with four different electric field sensing antennas, which can measure a wide range of time scales, from the static storm field to the fast change associated with dart leaders.

Correlative single-cell hard X-ray computed tomography and X-ray fluorescence imaging

Abstract X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging are two non-invasive imaging techniques to study cellular structures and chemical element distributions, respectively. However, correlative X-ray computed tomography and fluorescence imaging for the same cell have yet to be routinely realized due to challenges in sample preparation and X-ray radiation damage. Here we report an integrated experimental and computational workflow for achieving correlative multi-modality X-ray imaging of a single cell. The method consists of the preparation of radiation-resistant single-cell samples using live-cell imaging-assisted chemical fixation and freeze-drying procedures, targeting and labeling cells for correlative XCT and XRF measurement, and computational reconstruction of the correlative and multi-modality images. With XCT, cellular structures including the overall structure and intracellular organelles are visualized, while XRF imaging reveals the distribution of multiple chemical elements within the same cell. Our correlative method demonstrates the feasibility and broad applicability of using X-rays to understand cellular structures and the roles of chemical elements and related proteins in signaling and other biological processes.

Radiative forcing from the 2020 shipping fuel regulation is large but hard to detect

Reduction in aerosol cooling unmasks greenhouse gas warming, exacerbating the rate of future warming. The strict sulfur regulation on shipping fuel implemented in 2020 (IMO2020) presents an opportunity to assess the potential impacts of such emission regulations and the detectability of deliberate aerosol perturbations for climate intervention. Here we employ machine learning to capture cloud natural variability and estimate a radiative forcing of +0.074 ±0.005 W m -2 related to IMO2020 associated with changes in shortwave cloud radiative effect over three low-cloud regions where shipping routes prevail. We find low detectability of the cloud radiative effect of this event, attributed to strong natural variability in cloud albedo and cloud cover. Regionally, detectability is higher for the southeastern Atlantic stratocumulus deck. These results raise concerns that future reductions in aerosol emissions will accelerate warming and that proposed deliberate aerosol perturbations such as marine cloud brightening will need to be substantial in order to overcome the low detectability.

Electrochemically induced crystallization of amorphous materials in molten MgCl2: boron nitride and hard carbon

A novel and versatile strategy for the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation of boron nitride (BN) with the capability to control the degree of crystallization was developed through an electrochemical pathway using MgCl 2 at low temperature (750 °C). This procedure can be extended to the transformation of amorphous carbon to graphite, which significantly reduces the energy and cost, accelerates the synthesis process and could potentially replace industrial graphite synthesis globally. Therefore, the synthesized graphite exhibits much enhanced electrochemical performance at high charge–discharge rates (5C) compared to commercial synthetic graphite.
