CsV 3 Sb 5 : A $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Topological Kagome Metal with a Superconducting Ground State

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 , CsV 3 Sb 5 crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV 3 Sb 5 , demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T c = 2.5 K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory, which categorize CsV 3 Sb 5 as a Z 2 topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level (E F ), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high-temperature charge density wavelike instability. Finally, the implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Absence of High-Pressure Ground-State Reentrant Ferroelectricity in PbTiO 3

We study ferroelectricity in the classic perovskite ferroelectric PbTiO 3 to high pressures with density functional theory (DFT) and experimental diamond-anvil techniques. We use second harmonic generation spectroscopy to detect lack of inversion symmetry. Consistent with early understanding and experiments, we find that ferroelectricity disappears at moderate pressures. However, DFT computations show that the disappearance arises from the overtaking of zone boundary instabilities, and not from the squeezing out of the off-centering ferroelectric displacements with pressure, as previously thought. Moreover, at high pressures the distorted perovskite phases are metastable with respect to a new dense centrosymmetric postperovskite phase with P⁢2 1 /m symmetry and 8-coordinated Ti, which becomes stable at about 70 GPa.

Gamma Decay of the 154 Sm Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance: Smekal-Raman Scattering as a Novel Probe of Nuclear Ground-State Deformation

𝛾 decays of the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) of the deformed nucleus 154 Sm were measured using 2$^{+}_{1}$-Smekal-Raman and elastic scattering of linearly polarized, quasimonochromatic photon beams. The two scattering processes were disentangled through their distinct angular distributions. Their branching ratio and cross sections were determined at six excitation energies covering the 154 Sm IVGDR. Both agree with the predictions of the geometrical model for the IVGDR and confirm 𝛾 decay as an observable sensitive to the structure of the resonance. Consequently, the data place strong constraints on the nuclear shape, including the degree of triaxiality. The derived 154 Sm shape parameters 𝛽 = 0.2925⁢(25) and 𝛾 = 5.0⁢(15)° agree well with other measurements and recent Monte Carlo shell-model calculations.

Coexistence of commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground states in Co 𝑥 ⁢NbSe 2 single crystal

In Co 𝑥 ⁢NbSe 2 , crystal symmetry and cobalt site occupation drive the formation of two distinct magnetic phases. At 𝑥=1/4, the centrosymmetric structure (𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑚⁢𝑐) promotes Co-Co interactions leading to the formation of an 𝐴-type antiferromagnetic structure phase with a transition temperature of 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$=169K. At 𝑥=1/3, the noncentrosymmetric structure (𝑃⁢6 3 ⁢22) induces a lower-temperature magnetic phase with 𝑇$^S_𝑁$=28K. We report the coexistence of both substructures within a superlattice, with a nuclear propagation vector of (1/3, 1/3, 0) relative to the host lattice. Single crystals of Co 0.28 ⁢NbSe 2 exhibit both magnetic transitions, with 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$ corresponding to the 𝑥∼1/4 phase and 𝑇$^S_𝑁$ corresponding to the 𝑥∼1/3 phase. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements confirm these transitions, although only the high-temperature 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$ phase significantly affects resistivity. We successfully isolate each phase in powder samples, while single crystals with an intercalation ratio of 𝑥=0.28 display the coexistence of both phases in a single sample. Using single-crystal neutron diffraction, we solved the magnetic structure of the high-temperature centrosymmetric phase (𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$), and neutron powder diffraction revealed the double-𝑞 magnetic structure of the low-temperature noncentrosymmetric phase (𝑇$^S_𝑁$).
