Descent Systems Study Presentation for Game Changing Development FY21 Annual Program Review

Previous NASA studies of landing human-scale payloads on Mars have concluded that supersonic retropropulsion (SRP), or using multiple retrorocket engines beginning at supersonic descent conditions, is an enabling technology. DSS is partnering with the Aerosciences Evaluation and Test Capabilities (AETC) office to conduct a SRP test in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT) to quantify the SRP prediction capabilities of multiple computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers for a range of model configurations, thrust magnitudes, and tunnel conditions.

Game-Changing Science with SmallSats and Hosted Payloads

This talk outlines the opportunities using space-based remote sensing to collect the basic climate research data that will serve as the foundation of our science, our models, and our predictive capabilities. With SmallSats and hosted payloads to supplement data from our traditional large spacecraft, and with constellations of SmallSats and with hosted payloads, the Science Mission Directorate is able to make new types of observations, such as synchronic temporal and spatial measurements of the same events. Our data enables science-based decision making. Our models and predictions inform and educate our decision makers at every level.

Space Technology Mission Directorate - Game Changing Development Program - Vertical Solar Array Technology Project

The Vertical Solar Array Technology (VSAT) project is focused on the development of solar array technologies necessary for sustained presence on the lunar surface circa 2028. Existing solar array structures and deployment system technologies are designed for either zero-g or horizontal surface deployment. VSAT will explore vertical array deployment on extension masts of up to 10m in length in order to capture near continuous sun light at the lunar south pole.

Space Technology Mission Directorate - Game Changing Development Program: FY22 Dust Mitigation Standards Annual Review Presentation

Develop an accessible, understandable, comprehensive, and refereed guide to avoiding lunar dust problems during surface operations, both for inexperienced mechanisms designers in academia or small companies *and* for seasoned mission veterans. Extensive references into the detailed technical literature provide a “how to” lunar dust mitigation reference.
