Boundary-fitted coordinate systems for numerical solution of partial differential equations - A review

A comprehensive review of methods of numerically generating curvilinear coordinate systems with coordinate lines coincident with all boundary segments is given. Some general mathematical framework and error analysis common to such coordinate systems is also included. The general categories of generating systems are those based on conformal mapping, orthogonal systems, nearly orthogonal systems, systems produced as the solution of elliptic and hyperbolic partial differential equations, and systems generated algebraically by interpolation among the boundaries. Also covered are the control of coordinate line spacing by functions embedded in the partial differential operators of the generating system and by subsequent stretching transformation. Dynamically adaptive coordinate systems, coupled with the physical solution, and time-dependent systems that follow moving boundaries are treated. References reporting experience using such coordinate systems are reviewed as well as those covering the system development.

Heating measurements on Space Shuttle Orbiter models with differentially deflected elevons

The phase-change paint technique was used to make heat-transfer measurements on five Space Shuttle Orbiter models with differentially-deflected elevons. The outboard elevons were deflected windward through an angle delta when the inboard elevons were deflected through an angle - 2delta, where delta = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 deg. The models were tested in air at Mach 6 and Mach 10 with two different flow conditions at each Mach number. Each test was run at three angles of attack; 20, 28, and 35 deg. This study was restricted to the windward side of the wing/elevons area. Multiple chord-wise streaks of high heating often occurred on the wings and sometimes extended to localized spots of high heating on the windward-deflected elevons. The extent of heating was a function of angle of attack and test conditions, but in general differential deflection of the elevons affected the wing heat-transfer coefficient on the order of 40 percent or less whereas the windward elevon heat-transfer coefficient was a function of the deflection angle and could be many times the value determined for the undeflected elevon.

Numerical grid generation; Proceedings of the Symposium on Numerical Generation of Curvilinear Coordinate Systems and Their Use in the Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations, Nashville, TN, April 13-16, 1982

General curvilinear coordinate systems are considered along with the error induced by coordinate systems, basic differential models for coordinate generation, elliptic grid generation, conformal grid generation, algebraic grid generation, orthogonal grid generation, patched coordinate systems, and solid mechanics applications of boundary fitted coordinate systems. Attention is given to coordinate system control and adaptive meshes, the application of body conforming curvilinear grids for finite difference solution of external flow, the use of solution adaptive grids in solving partial differential equations, adaptive gridding for finite difference solutions to heat and mass transfer problems, and the application of curvilinear coordinate generation techniques to the computation of internal flows. Other topics explored are related to the solution of nonlinear water wave problems using boundary-fitted coordinate systems, the numerical modeling of estuarine hydrodynamics on a boundary-fitted coordinate system, and conformal grid generation for multielement airfoils.

Biophysical mechanism of differential growth during gravitropism

A research project is described the goal of which is to determine the mechanism of gravitropic curvature in plant stems at the biophysical and the cellular level. The reorientation of plant organs under the influence of gravity is due to differential growth of the upper and lower sides of the organ. The rate of plant cell enlargement is governed by four biophysical parameters: (1) the extensibility of the cell wall; (2) the minimum stress in the cell wall required for wall expansion (the "yield threshold'); (3) the osmotic pressure difference between the cell contents and the water source; and (4) the hydraulic conductivity of the pathway for water uptake. Gravitropic response must involve differential alteration of one or more of these four parameters on the two sides of the growing organ. Each of these factors will be examined to assess the role it plays in gravitropism.

Differential versus limiter-discriminator detection of narrow-band FM

The error probability performance of differential detection of narrow-band FM is determined and compared with the analogous results for limiter-discriminator detection of the same modulation. It is shown that over a large class of benign and hostile environments, e.g., Gaussian IF filter, AWGN, partial-band noise jamming, the differential detector offers no theoretical performance advantage over the limiter-discriminator receiver with integrate-and-dump postdetection filtering.

Differential absorption lidar technique for measurement of the atmospheric pressure profile

A new two-wavelength lidar technique for remotely measuring the pressure profile using the trough absorption region between two strong lines in the oxygen A band is described. The theory of integrated vertical path, differential ranging, and horizontal-path pressure measurements is given, with methods to desensitize and correct for temperature effects. The properties of absorption troughs are described and shown to reduce errors due to laser frequency jitter by up to two orders of magnitude. A general analysis, including laser bandwidth effects, demonstrates that pressure measurements with an integrated-vertical-path technique are typically fifty times more accurate than with a differential ranging technique. Simulations show 0.1-0.3 percent accuracy for ground and Shuttle-based pressure-profile and surface-pressure experiments.

Differential rotation in a solar-driven quasi-axisymmetric circulation

The concept of a quasi-axisymmetric circulation is used to explore the global scale dynamics of planetary atmospheres. A numerical circulation model applicable to Jupiter is presented, and an analytical study is performed elucidating the conditions leading to differential rotation in an atmosphere which is convectively unstable. A linear system forced by solar differential heating is considered, with nonlinear effects arising from advection being represented in the form of eddy diffusion. An empirical, latitudinal spectrum of the observed zonal wind field on Jupiter is discussed. Numerical solutions are presented which reveal banded wind fields with alternating and equatorial zonal jets and a multicellular Ferrel-Thomson meridional circulation consistent with the observed cloud striations on Jupiter. The vertical derivatives are parameterized to construct a simplified one-layer model.

A new explicit method for the numerical solution of parabolic differential equations

A new method is derived for solving parabolic partial differential equations arising in transient heat conduction or in boundary-layer flows. The method is based on a combination of the modified differential quadrature (MDQ) method with the rational Runge-Kutta time-integration scheme. It is fully explicit, requires no matrix inversion, and is stable for any time-step for the heat equations. Burgers equation and the one- and two-dimensional heat equations are solved to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The present method is found to be very accurate and efficient when results are compared with analytic solutions.

The performance of differential VLBI delay during interplanetary cruise

Project Voyager radio metric data are used to evaluate the orbit determination abilities of several data strategies during spacecraft interplanetary cruise. Benchmark performance is established with an operational data strategy of conventional coherent doppler, coherent range, and explicitly differenced range data from two intercontinental baselines to ameliorate the low declination singularity of the doppler data. Employing a Voyager operations trajectory as a reference, the performance of the operational data strategy is compared to the performances of data strategies using differential VLBI delay data (spacecraft delay minus quasar delay) in combinations with the aforementioned conventional data types. The comparison of strategy performances indicates that high accuracy cruise orbit determination can be achieved with a data strategy employing differential VLBI delay data, where the quantity of coherent radio metric data has been greatly reduced.

Differential eigenvalue problems in which the parameter appears nonlinearly

Several methods are examined for determining the eigenvalues of a system of equations in which the parameter appears nonlinearly. The equations are the result of the discretization of differential eigenvalue problems using a finite Chebyshev series. Two global methods are considered which determine the spectrum of eigenvalues without an initial estimate. A local iteration scheme with cubic convergence is presented. Calculations are performed for a model second order differential problem and the Orr-Sommerfeld problem for plane Poiseuille flow.

Differential wall growth in gravistimulated corn roots: Its timing and regulation

The experiments designed to document cell-wall level changes which occur as a result of their gravistimulation are described. The goal of this research is to elucidate the mechanism and time frame of differential growth following a controlled gravistimulation. To achieve this, rates of wall deposition will be determined by following the incorporation of radioactive monosaccharides into the wall. Complementing this experiment will be a freeze-etch study directed at revealing the spatial arrangment of both newly-deposited microfibrils and microfibrils that were present in the growing root prior to stimulation. The second phase of the proposed research will examine the roles ethylene and Ca(2+) have in the modulation of differential wall changes during gravitropism. Ethylene and Ca(2+) have both been implicated as regulators of the gravitropic response in roots and they have also been implicated as regulators of the gravitropic response in roots and they have also been reported to exert some control on the orientation of microfibrils. Both of these agents will be manipulated in such a way as to reveal whether they have a direct influence on cell wall deposition and microfibrillar alignment during the geotropic response.

The cosmic ray differential diurnal variation dependences on the zenith angle and the geomagnetic disturbance

Simultaneous and continuous muon measurements in two opposite azimuthal directions under equal zenith angles demonstrated the importance of this method for cosmic ray diurnal variation investigations. Lately these measurements were extended by means of improved telescopes. The obtained cosmic ray diurnal variations were presented as intensity differential curves. Theoretical investigations connected the properties of these curves with some interplanetary spece parameters. The harmonics of these curves were interpreted physically. Some order difference curves were introduced. In earlier works some dependences between the parameters characterizing the first and the second harmonics of the differential intensity curves and the geomagnetic activity were found. Then all measurements were carried out under only one zenith angle. The results of investigations of similar dependences using data of simultaneous measurements under three different zenith angles are presented.

Exact differential equation for the density and ionization energy of a many-particle system

The present investigation is concerned with relations studied by Hohenberg and Kohn (1964) and Kohn and Sham (1965). The properties of a ground-state many-electron system are determined by the electron density. The correct differential equation for the density, as dictated by density-functional theory, is presented. It is found that the ground-state density n of a many-electron system obeys a Schroedinger-like differential equation which may be solved by standard Kohn-Sham programs. Results are connected to the traditional exact Kohn-Sham theory. It is pointed out that the results of the current investigations are readily extended to spin-density functional theory.

Disdrometer measurements during a unique rainfall event in central Illinois and their implication for differential reflectivity radar observations

Understanding of the natural variability of rainfall is essential in order to assess radar's ability to estimate rainfall characteristics such as rainfall rate, rainfall water content and drop size distribution parameters. The two most useful measurements of rainfall for this purpose derive from ground-based disdrometers and aircraft-borne drop size spectrometers. Accordingly, this paper examines a time series of disdrometer measurements obtained during a unique rainfall event which occurred in central Illinois on October 6, 1982. The measurements are used to predict the behavior of radar observables (reflectivity factor and differential reflectivity) for application to the estimation of rainfall parameters. The results support previous theoretical predictions (Seliga and Bringi, 1976) and experimental results (Seliga et al., 1979, 1981; Bringi et al., 1982; Hall et al., 1980; Goddard et al., 1982) based upon the differential reflectivity (ZDR) radar technique.

The application of Legendre-tau approximation to parameter identification for delay and partial differential equations

Approximation schemes based on Legendre-tau approximation are developed for application to parameter identification problem for delay and partial differential equations. The tau method is based on representing the approximate solution as a truncated series of orthonormal functions. The characteristic feature of the Legendre-tau approach is that when the solution to a problem is infinitely differentiable, the rate of convergence is faster than any finite power of 1/N; higher accuracy is thus achieved, making the approach suitable for small N.

Differential detection of Gaussian MSK in a mobile radio environment

Minimum shift keying with Gaussian shaped transmit pulses is a strong candidate for a modulation technique that satisfies the stringent out-of-band radiated power requirements of the mobil radio application. Numerous studies and field experiments have been conducted by the Japanese on urban and suburban mobile radio channels with systems employing Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK) transmission and differentially coherent reception. A comprehensive analytical treatment is presented of the performance of such systems emphasizing the important trade-offs among the various system design parameters such as transmit and receiver filter bandwidths and detection threshold level. It is shown that two-bit differential detection of GMSK is capable of offering far superior performance to the more conventional one-bit detection method both in the presence of an additive Gaussian noise background and Rician fading.
