S band radar differential reflectivity measurements in multiple polarization planes along satellite slant paths

A novel approach to making differential reflectivity measurements in multiple polarization planes has been proposed. This paper describes a versatile technique using a mechanical polarization switch and the systematic errors in differential reflectivity measurements which result. Initial results of simultaneous X band slant path measurements of attenuation and depolarization at 11.6 GHz and differential reflectivity measurements at 2.8 GHz using a slow polarization switch are presented.

Identification of unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelastic integro-differential systems

The problem of estimating integro-differential models based on test or simulation data is dealt with. The identification techniques proposed for estimating parameters in models described by differential equations need to be considerably extended to deal with the integral terms. Conditions under which the integral terms may be approximated by algebraic values are discussed. The integro-differential models discussed are related to indicial models proposed by aerodynamicists to describe unsteady flow.

Application of differential GPS to civil helicopter terminal guidance

NASA is conducting a research program to evaluate differential Global Positioning System (GPS) concepts for civil helicopter navigation. It is pointed out that the civil helicopter community will probably be an early user of GPS because of the unique mission operations in areas where precise navigation aids are not available. Applications with very demanding accuracy requirements are related to remote area search and rescue, offshore oil platform approach, remote area precision landing, and other precise navigation operations. Differential GPS appears to provide a solution for meeting the accuracy requirements involved in the considered operations. The present investigation is concerned with results obtained in three areas studied in connection with the conducted research program. Attention is given to mission-tailored satellite selection, a satellite selection algorithm concept, satellite selection algorithm simulation results, and differential GPS ground station design.

Seebeck Coefficient Measured With Differential Heat Pulses

Common experimental errors reduced because pulse technique suppresses drifts in thermoelectric measurements. Differential-heat-pulse apparatus measures Seebeck coefficient in semiconductors at temperatures up to 1,900 K. Sample heated to measuring temperature in furnace. Ends of sample then differentially heated a few degrees more by lamps. Differential temperature rise and consequent Seebeck voltage measured via thermocouple leads. Because pulse technique used, errors that often arise from long-term drifts in thermoelectric measurements suppressed. Apparatus works with temperature differences of only few degrees, further increasing accuracy of coefficients obtained.

Transformation matrices between non-linear and linear differential equations

In the linearization of systems of non-linear differential equations, those systems which can be exactly transformed into the second order linear differential equation Y"-AY'-BY=0 where Y, Y', and Y" are n x 1 vectors and A and B are constant n x n matrices of real numbers were considered. The 2n x 2n matrix was used to transform the above matrix equation into the first order matrix equation X' = MX. Specially the matrix M and the conditions which will diagonalize or triangularize M were studied. Transformation matrices P and P sub -1 were used to accomplish this diagonalization or triangularization to return to the solution of the second order matrix differential equation system from the first order system.

A combined integrating and differentiating matrix formulation for boundary value problems on rectangular domains

Integrating and differentiating matrices allow the numerical integration and differential of functions whose values are known at points of a discrete grid. Previous derivations of these matrices were restricted to one dimensional grids or to rectangular grids with uniform spacing in at least one direction. Integrating and differentiating matrices were developed for grids with nonuniform spacing in both directions. The use of these matrices as operators to reformulate boundary value problems on rectangular domains as matrix problems for a finite dimensional solution vector is considered. The method requires nonuniform grids which include near boundary points. An eigenvalue problem for the transverse vibrations of a simply supported rectangular plate is solved to illustrate the method.

Estimation of the differential pulse propagation times in two-color laser ranging systems

Two-color laser ranging systems can be used to determine the atmospheric delay by measuring the difference in propagation times between two optical pulses transmitted at two different wavelengths. In this paper, the performance of a cross-correlation technique for estimating the differential propagation time is analyzed by considering both speckle and shot noise. For the flat diffuse targets, the differential timing accuracy is highly dependent on the receiver bandwidth and the characteristics of the time-resolved speckle. At low signal levels, when the receiver bandwidth is chosen properly, the performance of the correlation estimator is comparable with that of the maximum-likelihood estimator. At high signal levels, however, speckle places a fundamental limit on the performance of the correlation estimator. For the cube-corner reflector arrays, timing performance is dominated by partially developed speckle. The differential propagation time cannot by resolved to better than the pulse widths of the received signals.

Bit synchronization of differentially detected MSK and GMSK

The filter-square bit synchronizer has been previously proposed and shown to give near optimum performance for coherent PSK systems. In this paper, the same bit synchronization scheme is analyzed for a differentially detected GMSK system. It is shown that the filter-square bit synchronizer can successfully work in a differential phase detection receiver. By making linear approximations appropriate for high loop signal-to-noise ratio operation (the usual case of interest in tracking), it is demonstrated that the mean-square bit sync jitter of differentially detected GMSK system reveals striking similarities both qualitatively and quantitatively in comparison with that of a coherent PSK system.

Formationkeeping of Spacecraft via Differential Drag

This paper examines the use of differential drag in the formationkeeping of spacecraft. In many future space missions one satellite will be required to fly in a specific position with respect to another satellite; this action is referred to as formationkeeping. In this study, differential drag is the difference in drag between the two satellites. Reasons to use differential drag as an actuator for formationkeeping include the avoidance of jet plume impingement effects on closely spaced satellites and possible fuel savings. The equations of relative motion between the two satellites are derived and a mathematical transformation is made to reduce the formationkeeping problem to the simultaneous solution of a double integrator and a harmonic oscillator. A two-part control law is developed that simultaneously and dependently solves the double oscillator and harmonic integrator. Results are presented of eight test cases being driven to a target position; two different simulations are used. The validity of assumptions made in the derivation of the control law is examined in the comparison of similar test cases run through different simulations. The control law developed can drive a satellite from an initial position to a target position and maintain the satellite at that location.

Architecture and performance of a real time differential GPS ground station

The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite based navigation system that can be operated in a differential mode. The basic concept of differential GPS is to have a local ground station at a known location. The ground station continuously determines bias corrections based on the received satellite signals and transmits these corrections to local users. This allows the user to improve significantly their estimate of position. The architecture of a real time differential GPS ground station based on two STI (Stanford Telecommunications, Inc.) single-channel GPS receivers is presented. Receiver requirements are described, together with the receiver architectures. Real time operation results are presented for recent data collected from six satellites.

Estimation of time- and state-dependent delays and other parameters in functional differential equations

A parameter estimation algorithm is developed which can be used to estimate unknown time- or state-dependent delays and other parameters (e.g., initial condition) appearing within a nonlinear nonautonomous functional differential equation. The original infinite dimensional differential equation is approximated using linear splines, which are allowed to move with the variable delay. The variable delays are approximated using linear splines as well. The approximation scheme produces a system of ordinary differential equations with nice computational properties. The unknown parameters are estimated within the approximating systems by minimizing a least-squares fit-to-data criterion. Convergence theorems are proved for time-dependent delays and state-dependent delays within two classes, which say essentially that fitting the data by using approximations will, in the limit, provide a fit to the data using the original system. Numerical test examples are presented which illustrate the method for all types of delay.

Differential surface models for tactile perception of shape and on-line tracking of features

Tactile perception of shape involves an on-line controller and a shape perceptor. The purpose of the on-line controller is to maintain gliding or rolling contact with the surface, and collect information, or track specific features of the surface such as edges of a certain sharpness. The shape perceptor uses the information to perceive, estimate the parameters of, or recognize the shape. The differential surface model depends on the information collected and on the a priori information known about the robot and its physical parameters. These differential models are certain functionals that are projections of the dynamics of the robot onto the surface gradient or onto the tangent plane. A number of differential properties may be directly measured from present day tactile sensors. Others may have to be indirectly computed from measurements. Others may constitute design objectives for distributed tactile sensors of the future. A parameterization of the surface leads to linear and nonlinear sequential parameter estimation techniques for identification of the surface. Many interesting compromises between measurement and computation are possible.

Quasi-Newton methods for parameter estimation in functional differential equations

A state-space approach to parameter estimation in linear functional differential equations is developed using the theory of linear evolution equations. A locally convergent quasi-Newton type algorithm is applied to distributed systems with particular emphasis on parameters that induce unbounded perturbations of the state. The algorithm is computationally implemented on several functional differential equations, including coefficient and delay estimation in linear delay-differential equations.

Apollo 15 Mg- and Fe-norites - A redefinition of the Mg-suite differentiation trend

The Apollo 15 highland rocks from the Apennine Front include clasts of mafic plutonic rocks from deep in the lunar crust that were brought to the surface by the Imbrium and Serenitatis impacts. The Apollo 15 norites exhibit wide variations in mineral and bulk compositions and include Fe-norites that plot between the three major pristine rock fields on a diagram of Mg' in mafic minerals vs An in paglioclase. Based on assemblages and compositions of minerals, and on ratios of elemental abundances, it is concluded that these Apollo 15 Fe-norites are differentiated members of the Mg-norite suite. The Apollo 15 and 17 norites and troctolites form a closely related suite of rocks, whose variations in mineral compositions represent the main differentiation trend of the Mg-suite. This trend in mineral compositions has a steeper slope than the previous Mg-suite field. The parent magmas for these Mg-suite rocks formed by partial melting deep in the lunar mantle. Differentiation by fractional crystallization may also have included assimilation of crustal components as the magmas rose from the mantle and crystallized plutons in the lower crust.

The competition between thermal contraction and differentiation in the stress history of the moon

The stress history of the moon is discussed, taking into consideration the effects of thermal contraction and differentiation. The amount of expansion caused by extracting basalt from undifferentiated lunar material is estimated taking account of the uncertainty in the knowledge of the appropriate compositions, and the resulting estimate of the expansion is used to compare the relative importance of the thermal and differentiation effects in the moon's volumetric history. The results of calculations show that differentiation is likely to be of major importance and, thus, thermal expansion is not the sole possible contributor to evolutionary changes in the lunar radius.

Computer analysis of the negative differential resistance switching phenomenon of double-injection devices

By directly solving the semiconductor differential equations for the double-injection (DI) devices involving two interacting deep levels, the authors studied the negative differential resistance switching characteristic and its relationship with the device dimension, doping level, and dependence on the deep impurity profile. Computer simulation showed that although one can increase the threshold voltage by increasing the device length, the excessive holding voltage that would follow would put this device in a very limited application such as pulse power source. The excessive leakage current in the low conductance state also jeopardizes the attempt to use the device for any practical purpose. Unless there are new materials and deep impurities found that have a great differential hole and electron capture cross sections and a reasonable energy bandgap for low intrinsic carrier concentration, no big improvement in the fate of DI devices is expected in the near future.

Double Differential Encoding And Detection In MPSK

Proposed communication system based on multiple-phase-shift-keying (MPSK) modulation includes double differential encoder in transmitter and double differential detector in receiver. Transmitter generates phase-modulated signal suitable for decoding and detection by subsystem. Detector removes Doppler-frequency component from noisy, Doppler-shifted signal encoded in subsystem. Overall effect of double-differential scheme to cancel effect of Doppler shift on modulation in received signal. Not necessary to estimate Doppler shift to correct for it.
