Identification of a Delay Attack in the Secondary Control of Grid-Tied Inverter Systems
This work is developed for the identification of a denial-of-service cyberattack on the secondary controller of inverter systems which is connected to the power grid. The identification is made through the dynamic response of the reactive power (Q) of the system under attack. By observing the dynamic characteristic of Q, it is possible to correlate the attack with the nominal response of the hierarchical controller. The article shows that the occurrence of the attack can be identified through a supervisory control that runs a model in parallel. The article argues that after an early identification of the attack, a local controller can take action to mitigate its effects on the system’s response.
Physics-Informed Evolutionary Strategy Based Control for Mitigating Delayed Voltage Recovery
Here, in this work we propose a novel data-driven, real-time power system voltage stability control method based on the physics-informed guided meta evolutionary strategy (ES). The main objective is to quickly provide an adaptive control strategy to secure system voltage stability. The problem is challenging due to the high-dimensional feature of the power system model and the fast-changing and uncertain nature of power system operation scenarios. To this end, a model-free and derivative-free guided ES method is applied. The method is further combined with a meta-learning strategy to make the learnt control policy automatically adapted to unseen operation conditions and fault scenarios, which is highly desired for real-time emergency control. Last but not least, physical knowledge is embedded in the above method through a trainable action mask technique to rule out unnecessary load shedding actions for better learning and control performance. Case studies on the IEEE 300-bus system and comparisons with other state-of-the-art benchmark methods verify the superiority of the proposed physics-informed guided meta ES method in realizing fast and adaptive power system voltage stability control.
High-Fuel Loading Ignition Delay Time Characterization of Hydrogen/Natural Gas/Ammonia at Gas Turbine-Relevant Conditions Inside a High-Pressure Shock Tube
Abstract This study explores the combustion characterization of high-fuel percentage, air-diluted mixtures of H2 mixed with natural gas (NG) as well as mixtures of H2 and NH3 at temperatures and pressures relevant to turbine operating conditions (20–30 bar, 1000–1500 K). Lower temperatures (below 1070 K) exhibit preignition characteristics due to non-homogeneity. An attempt to mitigate these occurrences at high pressures is investigated using the constrained reaction volume (CRV) stage-filling technique. Due to the need to further refine the facility CRV stage-filling uncertainty, only higher temperature data will be interpreted at this time. The test conditions in this study closely replicate the temperatures, pressures, and mixtures that would be seen in hydrogen-powered gas turbines, making it the first to explore such conditions. The experimental IDTs were compared against the current state-of-the-art chemical kinetic models for mechanism validation. The current work will advance H2-powered turbines and aims to determine the optimum molecular ratio of H2 when mixed with natural gas.

Burst delay line for generating ultrashort pulse bursts with interval tunability from femtoseconds to nanoseconds.
Ultrashort burst laser pulses are important for applications in laser processing and spectroscopy. However, existing burst generators face limitations in pulse time interval tunability and coaxiality. Here, we present a burst pulse generator that delivers coaxial ultrashort pulses with tunable pulse time intervals using a single translation stage. The constructed system produced eight femtosecond pulses with uniform intervals tunable from 100 fs to 1.93 ns, equivalent to burst-internal repetition rates spanning 10 THz to 0.52 GHz. We further demonstrated interval-dependent plasma emission in air filamentation, providing a compact platform to study burst-laser-induced phenomena.
Probing Delayed C–I Bond Fission in the UV Photochemistry of 2-Iodothiophene with Core-to-Valence Transient Absorption Spectroscopy
The UV photodissociation dynamics of 2-iodothiophene are monitored by an XUV probe pulse that promotes iodine 4d core-to-valence transitions. Absorption changes from molecular iodine species conclusively show that dissociation requires up to ~1 picosecond.
System Calibration Including Time Delay Estimation for GNSS/INS-Assisted Pushbroom Scanners Onboard UAV Platforms
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs ) equipped with imaging sensors and integrated global navigation satellite system/inertial navigation system (GNSS/INS ) units are used for numerous applications. Deriving reliable 3D coordinates from such UAVs is contingent on accurate geometric calibration, which encompasses the estimation of mounting parameters and synchronization errors. Through a rigorous impact analysis of such systematic errors, this article proposes a direct approach for spatial and temporal calibration (estimating system parameters through a bundle adjustment procedure) of a GNSS/INS -assisted pushbroom scanner onboard a UAV platform. The calibration results show that the horizontal and vertical accuracies are within the ground sampling distance of the sensor. Unlike for frame camera systems, this article also shows that the indirect approach is not a feasible solution for pushbroom scanners due to their limited ability for decoupling system parameters. This finding provides further support that the direct approach is recommended for spatial and temporal calibration of UAV pushbroom scanner systems.
Evaluation of Commercially Available Precursors for Obscuring Wet Industrial Irradiator Facility Pools to Delay Adversarial Source Removal (Part 2)
The behavior of commercially available potential obscurants for cobalt-60 ( 60 Co) wet-source storage industrial irradiator facilities (IRFs) were further evaluated for corrosive behavior of Nordion C-188 pencil stubs and obscurant properties under radiation exposure ( 60 Co). The potential obscurants studied included: titania aqueous dispersions (TAD - water soluble white paint), Chlorazol Black (CBOD - Chlorazol Black organic dye), powdered milk (COW - calcium obscurant in water), diatomaceous earth (DEA - diatomaceous earth additive), and rhodamine 6G (R6G). For corrosion efforts, stubs from an inert C-188 pencil-source rod were soaked in obscurant solutions and visually inspected. For radiation stability, obscurant samples were exposed to 60 Co radiation sources at 207 rad/s. The results from these studies reveal: the obscurants had no impact on the surrogate samples and may assist in terms of corrosion resistance; materials that did not rely on organic compounds to provide obscurance performed the best, as the organic compounds decomposed too rapidly in the high radiation environment, whereas the materials survived.
First observation of the production of three massive vector bosons and search for long-lived particles using delayed photons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ TeV}$
This thesis presents the first observation of the production of three massive vector bosons (VVV with V = W, Z) in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ TeV}$. The search was performed in final states with two same-sign charged leptons (electrons or muons) plus one or two jets, and three, four, five, or six leptons from WWW, WWZ, WZZ and ZZZ decays, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected by the CMS experiment during 2016-2018. The observed (expected) significance of the combined VVV production is 5.7 (5.9) standard deviations, and the production cross section is measured to be 1010$^{+210}_{-200}$(stat) $^{+150}_{-120}$(syst) fb, corresponding to a signal strength of 1.02$^{+0.26}_{-0.23}$. We also found evidence for WWW and for WWZ production, with observed significances of 3.3 and 3.4 standard deviations, respectively. The measured production cross sections for individual VVV processes are also reported. The establishment of VVV production opens a new program of many standard model studies (such as gauge-gauge and Higgs-gauge couplings), and provides a new tool for many new physics searches (such as anomalous gauge coupling searches, new resonance searches). This thesis also reports a search for long-lived supersymmetry particles decaying to photons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV$, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb -1 collected by CMS during 2016-2017. Results are interpreted with a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model, where the long-lived particle is a neutralino and the lightest supersymmetry particle is a gravitino. For neutralino proper decay lengths of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 m, masses up to 320, 525, 360, and 215 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, respectively. This result extends the limits from previous searches by one order of magnitude for the neutralino proper decay length and up to 100 GeV more for the neutralino mass. Motivated by the need for precision timing measurements for long-lived particle searches, as well as for improvements in general object reconstruction performance, the timing performance of two types of sensors are studied in this thesis: one with a Cerium doped Lutetium Yttrium Orthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) crystal as the scintillator and a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the photodetector, another with a Cadmium-Telluride sensor as the active material for a sampling calorimeter. Both setups have been demonstrated with test beams to be able to provide timing measurements of particles with a resolution below 30 ps.
Mechanisms delaying glacier retreat in the presence of ocean temperature variability at Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica [Slides]
In this work, we conclude ocean temperature variability affects grounding line evolution and glacier mass loss. As a consequence of local ocean density structure and bathymetry, variable runs always retreat less than steady runs.
