Refractive-index profile and physical process determination in thick gratings in electrooptic crystals

A method for determining the refractive index profile of thick phase gratings in linear electrooptic crystals is presented. This method also determines the effective photovoltaic electric field and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift during hologram recording. The method requires only a knowledge of the modulation ratio during hologram recording and the fundamental and the higher-order diffraction efficiencies of the grating. As an illustration of the method, the refractive index profile, the effective photovoltaic field, and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift are determined from experimental measurements for a lithium niobate holographic grating.

Reflection grating fabrication for the Rockets for Extended-source X-ray Spectroscopy

Abstract The Rockets for Extended-source X-ray Spectroscopy (tREXS) grating spectrograph uses modules of reflection gratings to collect spectroscopic data from extended astronomical sources of soft X-rays. Two blazed master gratings were produced on silicon substrates with electron-beam lithography (EBL) and complementary nanofabrication processes that include KOH etching. Substrate-conformal imprint lithography (SCIL) was then used to create 191 replicas of the two grating masters for use in the flight instrument. Diffraction efficiency was measured for several replica gratings, which achieve a peak of$$ \varvec{>} $$ > 70% absolute efficiency near 0.22 keV and an average of$$ \varvec{\approx } $$ ≈ 50% absolute efficiency across the measured band, from 0.18 – 0.8 keV. Here we detail the nanofabrication of the grating masters, including the EBL parameters and tREXS-specific fabrication considerations, and the SCIL replication process used to generate the final instrument gratings. A discussion of grating characterization and areas for future improvement is also presented.

X-ray spectrographs using radial groove gratings

A high efficiency spectrograph design for the EUV and soft X rays is presented. This grazing incidence system uses a plane surface reflection grating with rulings that are radial, like the spokes of a wheel. The grating is placed in a beam of light that is converging to a focus. The single reflection off the grating is in the conical diffraction mount ensuring maximum performance from the system. Aberrations and performance levels are discussed. The gratings can be manufactured with existing ruling engines. Sample applications to an X-ray monochromator and an EUV stellar spectrograph are discussed.

Aberration corrected aspheric grating for far ultraviolet spectrographs - Conventional approach

Two approaches to reducing optical aberrations of concave grating spectrographs have been used, holographically controlling the groove curvature and spacing and reshaping the optical substrate while ruling the grooves conventionally. The latter approach, slightly deforming an ellipsoidal grating blank, can lead to diffraction-limited performance at a single FUV wavelength. When such a grating is used in a slitted Rowland circle spectrograph, the result is an extremely efficient spectrograph with spectral resolving power of about 30,000 and low astigmatism. Optical fabrication technology has advanced to the point where these exotic surface gratings are becoming practical.

Josephson junction interference grating.

The maximum current through multiple Josephson structures as a function of applied magnetic field is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the Josephson penetration depth effects and geometrical considerations. The symmetrical and asymmetrical current feed two-, three-, four-, and five-junction gratings are analyzed and discussed. The Josephson penetration depth is shown to control the amplitude of the interference and diffraction patterns of the interference grating. In addition the interior-junction-length/interference-loop-area product is shown to control the operating mode of the interference grating. The dependence of the magnetic field sensitivity and interference pattern amplitude on the number of junctions is discussed.

Echelle spectrographs at grazing incidence

It is shown that by using the conical diffraction mount, existing echelle gratings can be used at grazing incidence to achieve high spectral resolution in the extreme UV and soft X rays. Design considerations for grazing incidence echelle spectrographs are examined, and two sample designs are discussed. The first, for use in the extreme UV, has a primary mirror and an entrance slit to the spectrograph. The system has a resolution of 10,000, operates at any wavelength longward of 100 A, and covers 30% of the spectrum at a single setting. The X-ray spectrograph uses objective gratings to obtain spectral resolution of 28,000 over any factor of 2 in. wavelength. It operates to wavelengths as short as 4 A.

6000 lines/mm blazed grating for a high-resolution x-ray spectrometer

We have designed and fabricated a high groove density blazed grating for a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering spectrometer for the new Qerlin beamline at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) synchrotron facility. The gratings were fabricated using a set of nanofabrication techniques including e-beam lithography, nanoimprint, plasma etch, and anisotropic wet etching. Two gratings with groove density of 6000 lines/mm and 3000 lines/mm and optimized for operation in the 1st and 2nd negative diffraction order respectively were fabricated and tested. We report on fabrication details and characterization of the gratings at beamline 6.3.2 of the ALS.

Linear Fresnel Spectrometer Chip with Gradient Line Grating

A spectrometer that includes a grating that disperses light via Fresnel diffraction according to wavelength onto a sensing area that coincides with an optical axis plane of the grating. The sensing area detects the dispersed light and measures the light intensity associated with each wavelength of the light. Because the spectrometer utilizes Fresnel diffraction, it can be miniaturized and packaged as an integrated circuit.

The design and fabrication of a single leakage-channel grating coupler

The modeling and fabrication is described of waveguide grating couplers with out-coupling efficiencies into a single diffracted order nearing 100 pct. Termed Single Leakage Channel Grating Couplers (SLCGCs), these devices use a high reflectivity dielectric stack to reflect the out-coupled beam diffracted toward the substrate, back up into the air region where it constructively adds with the beam diffracted into the air region. Computer modeling shows that the branching ratio and the leakage rate can be independently controlled, and that the branching ratio is independent of grating depth and grating period. A SLCGC with a branching ratio of 97.1 pct. was fabricated using a combination of vacuum evaporation and wet chemical techniques.

Patterned dielectric back contact design for GaAs thermophotovoltaic devices

-Patterned-dielectric back contact structures in optoelectronic devices are designed to boost the reflectance of light from the device back surface while retaining a low-resistance pathway for electrical conductance. Their reduced light absorption at near- and sub-bandgap photon energies leads to improved luminescence in light-emitting diodes, greater photon recycling, voltage, and efficiency in photovoltaic cells, and greater recuperation of unabsorbed sub-bandgap light in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems. However, diffraction from the patterned features can deflect incident light in propagation directions that lead to light trapping and parasitic absorption in the cell. Here, in this article, we use rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) to study three-dimensional diffractive scattering of electromagnetic waves by periodic metal point-contact gratings on 1.42-eV GaAs TPV cells, to analyze their effect on unwanted sub-bandgap absorption in order to achieve higher TPV system efficiency. Solutions of Maxwell's equations calculated using RCWA are compared to measured sub-bandgap reflectance in experimental GaAs TPV devices with varying metal point-contact diameters and spacing. Modeling and experiments indicate decreased total reflectance due to these diffractive effects for a small point contact diameter of 1 μm, and this effect is much stronger at higher contact coverage fractions.

MAGELLAN: High resolution spectroscopy at FUV and EUV wavelengths

The aim of ESA's MAGELLAN mission is to provide high resolution spectra of celestial sources down to sixteenth magnitude over the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range (between 50 and 140 nm). This range extends from studies of interstellar matter in the disc and halo of this and other galaxies, to stellar envelopes, hot and evolved stars, clusters, intergalactic matter, nuclei of galaxies, quasars, and, finally, planets and satellites. The instrument has a nonconventional optical design using only one reflecting surface; a high groove density concave grating collects the star light, diffracts it and focuses its spectrum into a bidimensional windowless detector operated in a photon counting mode. The slitless configuration provides the spectra of all the sources (point like and extended) in the field of view of the grating. This field of view is limited by a grid collimator to reduce the diffuse background, the stray light and the probability of overlapping spectra in crowded fields.

Simplified dichromated gelatin hologram recording process

A simplified method for making dichromated gelatin (DCG) holographic optical elements (HOE) has been discovered. The method is much less tedious and it requires a period of processing time comparable with that for processing a silver halide hologram. HOE characteristics including diffraction efficiency (DE), linearity, and spectral sensitivity have been quantitatively investigated. The quality of the holographic grating is very high. Ninety percent or higher diffraction efficiency has been achieved in simple plane gratings made by this process.

Mathematical Simulation for Integrated Linear Fresnel Spectrometer Chip

A miniaturized solid-state optical spectrometer chip was designed with a linear gradient-gap Fresnel grating which was mounted perpendicularly to a sensor array surface and simulated for its performance and functionality. Unlike common spectrometers which are based on Fraunhoffer diffraction with a regular periodic line grating, the new linear gradient grating Fresnel spectrometer chip can be miniaturized to a much smaller form-factor into the Fresnel regime exceeding the limit of conventional spectrometers. This mathematical calculation shows that building a tiny motionless multi-pixel microspectrometer chip which is smaller than 1 cubic millimter of optical path volume is possible. The new Fresnel spectrometer chip is proportional to the energy scale (hc/lambda), while the conventional spectrometers are proportional to the wavelength scale (lambda). We report the theoretical optical working principle and new data collection algorithm of the new Fresnel spectrometer to build a compact integrated optical chip.

Liquid Crystal on Silicon Wavefront Corrector

A low cost, high resolution, liquid crystal on silicon, spatial light modulator has been developed for the correction of huge aberrations in an optical system where the polarization dependence and the chromatic nature are tolerated. However, the overall system performance suggests that this device is also suitable for real time correction of aberration in human eyes. This device has a resolution of 1024 x 768, and is driven by an XGA display driver. The effective stroke length of the device is 700 nm and 2000 nm for the visible and IR regions of the device, respectively. The response speeds are 50 Hz and 5 Hz, respectively, which are fast enough for real time adaptive optics for aberrations in human eyes. By modulating a wavefront of 2 pi, this device can correct for arbitrary high order wavefront aberrations since the 2-D pixel array is independently controlled by the driver. The high resolution and high accuracy of the device allow for diffraction limited correction of the tip and tilt or defocus without an additional correction loop. We have shown that for every wave of aberration, an 8 step blazed grating is required to achieve high diffraction efficiency around 80%. In light of this, up to 125 waves peak to valley of tip and tilt can be corrected if we choose the simplest aberration. Corrections of 34 waves of aberration, including high order Zernicke terms in a high magnification telescope, to diffraction limited performance (residual wavefront aberration less than 1/30 lambda at 632.8 nm) have been observed at high efficiency.
