2040 Vision Study: NASA’s T3 Implementation Activities

Over the last few decades, advances in high-performance computing, new materials characterization methods, and, more recently, an emphasis on integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) and additive manufacturing have been a catalyst for multiscale modeling and simulation-based design of materials and structures in the aerospace industry. As a result, NASA’s Transformational Tools and Technology (TTT) Project sponsored a study (performed by a team led by Pratt & Whitney) to define the potential 25-year future state required for integrated multiscale modeling of materials and systems (e.g., load-bearing structures) to accelerate the pace and reduce the expense of innovation in future aerospace and aeronautical systems. This talk will briefly review the findings of this 2040 Vision study (e.g., the 2040 vision state; the required interdependent core technical work areas, Key Element (KE); associated critical gaps and actions to close those gaps; and major recommendations) and discuss NASA’s TTT implementation activities, with special emphasis on recent accomplishments. The study, NASA CR 2018- 219771, envisions the development of a cyber-physical-social ecosystem comprised of experimentally verified and validated computational models, tools, and techniques, along with the associated digital tapestry, that marries two non-mutually exclusive paradigms – “design of the materials” (material scientist viewpoint) and “design with the materials” (structural analyst viewpoint) – into a concurrent transformational paradigm that impacts the entire supply chain to enable cost-effective, rapid, and revolutionary design of fit-for-purpose materials, components, and systems. Although the vision focused on aeronautics and space applications, it is believed that other engineering communities (e.g., automotive, biomedical, etc.) can benefit as well from the proposed framework with only minor modifications. Finally, it is TTT’s hope and desire that this vision provides the strategic guidance to both public and private research and development decision makers to make the proposed 2040 vision state a reality and thereby provide a significant advancement in the United State's global competitiveness

The Role in the Virtual Astronomical Observatory in the Era of Massive Data Sets

The Virtual Observatory (VO) is realizing global electronic integration of astronomy data. One of the long-term goals of the U.S. VO project, the Virtual Astronomical Observatory (VAO), is development of services and protocols that respond to the growing size and complexity of astronomy data sets. This paper describes how VAO staff are active in such development efforts, especially in innovative strategies and techniques that recognize the limited operating budgets likely available to astronomers even as demand increases. The project has a program of professional outreach whereby new services and protocols are evaluated.

Cybersecurity Information Technology

As technology and security measures improve, hackers keep looking for new techniques and vulnerabilities that allow them to gain access to sensitive data. This includes but is not limited to: user accounts, personal information, databases, operating systems, developmental and testing systems, and operational systems. A hacker is an individual that uses technology such as computers, tablets, and phones for unauthorized access to data. As technology becomes more robust at preventing known attacks, new vulnerabilities always exists. These vulnerabilities usually go unnoticed by developers and could potentially be exploited by an attacker. To prevent hackers from stealing sensitive and potentially harmful information, we must protect our systems and data against these criminals by developing new methods to mitigate the damage caused by these vulnerabilities and prevent them from occurring in the first place. An excellent way to discover how hackers compromise systems is by identifying and analyzing existing vulnerabilities and patching them. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is one of the many federal agencies that operates under a constant threat by hackers. NASA puts a tremendous amount of effort to maintain and improve their security measures, protect critical systems, and secure sensitive information from attackers who would attempt to use it against our nation's interests.

An On-Board Off-Board Framework for Online Replanning: Applied to UAVs in Urban Environments

Autonomous systems are being used in a multitude of areas at an increasing rate and require a high level of adaptivity and intelligence to operate safely, especially under faulty conditions. This paper introduces a novel genetic algorithm tailored for UAV trajectory replanning, with an improved execution time via search space reduction based on the operating conditions of the UAV and its remaining mission. A unique characteristic of the replanning agent is its fast-start and adaptive properties, pre-seeding candidates with partial solutions and dynamically tuning elitism, crossover, and mutation rates in correspondence to the average fitness and diversity of the population. A population restart mechanism and early stopping mechanism are evaluated as well to assess their effect on solution quality and runtime. Previous work on genetic algorithms for UAV replanning were conducted with short trajectories in a small state space. Our UAV operates in a 56,000 square meter simulated urban environment, with static obstacles and a total of 53 possible waypoints. The agent increases the safety and reliability of UAV autonomy when operating under faulty conditions and when replanning is required.
