A series of wind tunnel studies designed to assess the potential buffet problems resulting from orbiter wake characteristics with its tailcone removed are presented to provide design loads and acceleration environments, and to develop data on buffet sensitivity to various aerodynamic configurations and flight parameters. Data are intended to support subsequent analyses of structural fatigue life, crew efficiency, and equipment vibrations.
The possibility of using molecular nitrogen gas additive as an energy storage which in turn produces cesium ionization in advanced thermionic converter is first described theoretically. Experimental data confirmed for the first time such cesium ionization by vibrationally excited molecular nitrogen. Based on these experimental observations, the use of this scheme for the verification of validity of the recent Lam's theory and its application for the development of an advanced flowing thermionic converter are discussed.

Since 1978 the time-and-frequency standard CS1 of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has operated continuously as a 'primary clock'. Its uncertainty (7.1 to the negative 15th power) is considerably smaller than that of the other existing primary standards. The CS1 is equipped with a combination of quadrupole and hexapole magnets and uses a longitudinal C-field. Consequences of utilizing primary clocks of this quality for the generation of the International Atomic Time Scale TAI are discussed.
The oxidation of cesium on silver substrates has been studied using photoyield measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The occurrence of two O1s peaks in the core-level spectrum at 527.5 and 531.5-eV binding energy for cesium and oxygen exposures giving the optimum photoyield proves that two oxides of cesium exist in high-photoyield surfaces, and not Cs2O alone as previously thought. From the shape and position of the cesium peaks and the Auger parameter, the assignment of the O1s peaks at 527.5- and 531.5-eV binding energies to oxygen in Cs2O and Cs11O3, respectively, can be made. Hence the total cesium-oxygen layer is a mixed phase consisting of Cs2O + Cs11O3, approximately 20-40 A thick.
Studies of the air and water chemistry in the Amazon region of Brazil were undertaken. Harvard scientists were invited to participate in several experiments at INPA facilities, at other sites in Brazil, and aboard the RV Calypso of the Cousteau Society. Expeditions and participants are summarized.
A new and much more exact method for evaluation of the velocity distribution in 10 to the 15th power of the frequency of the clock. It seems feasible to improve the accuracy even further with better measurements. The evaluation of the C-field, however, is still limited to a few parts in 10 to the 14th power because of the uncertainties linked to the method used, and this uncertainty remains one of the major limitations of NRC's primary clocks.

Effective relaxation rates for atomic cesium pumped by doubled Alexandrite radiation are presented. Laser radiation levels are 8S 1/2 and 9S 1/2; resonance levels 3 = 8P 1/2 and 8P 1/2, respectively. In addition, Raman gain is represented in two graphs which plot chi per atom (10 to the -13 power) at Raman peak versus the infrared wave number per centimeter and the corresponding doubled Alexandrite wave number. One graph covers resonance level 8P, the other 9P; in both cases cesium is pumped with a peak pulse height of 0.5 MW in a 200 micron diameter spot size.
