Geographic applications of ERTS-1 imagery to rural landscape change in eastern Tennessee

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. A multistage sampling experiment was conducted using low (10,000') and high (60,000') altitude aircraft imagery in comparison with orbital (560 miles) ERTS imagery. Although the aircraft data provide detailed landscape observations similar to ground truth data, they cover relatively small areas per image frame for irregular static slices of time. By comparison, ERTS provides repetitive observations in a regional perspective for broad areal coverage. Microdensitometric and computer techniques are being used to analyze the ERTS imagery for gray tone signatures, comparisons, and ultimately for landscape change detection.

Observations of the plant growth and annual flooding in the inland delta of the Niger River, west Africa

The author has identified the following significant results. A large potential irrigation area with water delivery system in place was identified from ERTS-1 imagery. The site is in the Sahara Desert. Color additive change detection imagery was used to assess ground water potentials in the Savannah in conjunction with a major US AID-Mali livestock sector initiative. The potential capacity to map laterite deposits in the Inland Delta from space was established with the help of aerial and ground surveys. A color composite of the Inland Delta could have saved French biogeographers 3 5/6 man-years of professional field work had it been available, according to the man who prepared a plant community map of part of the southern Inland Delta.

Glaciation of northwestern Wyoming interpreted from ERTS-1

Analysis of ERTS Imagery has shown a number of alpine glacial features can be recognized and mapped successfully. Although the Wyoming mountains are generally regarded as the type locality for Rocky Mountain glaciation some areas have not been studied from a glacial standpoint because of inaccessibility or lack of topographic control. ERTS imagery provides an excellent base for this type of regional geomorphic study. A map of maximum extent of Wisconsin Ice, flow directions and major glacial features was compiled from interpretation of the ERTS imagery. Features which can be mapped are large moraines, outwash fans and terraces. Present-day glaciers and snowfields are easily discriminated and mapped. Glaciers and glacial deposits which serve as aquifers play a significant role in the hydrologic cycle and are important because of the increasing demand placed on our water resources. ERTS provides a quick and effective method for change detection and inventory of these vital resources.

Change in land use in the Phoenix (1:250,000) Quadrangle, Arizona between 1970 and 1972: Successful use of proposed land use classification system

Changes in land use in the Phoenix (1:250,000 scale) Quadrangle in Arizona have been mapped using only the images from ERTS-1, tending to verify the utility of a land use classification system proposed for use with ERTS images. The period of change investigated was from November 1970 to late summer or early fall, 1972. Seasonal changes also were studied using successive ERTS images. Types of equipment used to aid interpretation included a color additive viewer, a twenty-power magnifier, a density slicer, and a diazo copy machine for making ERTS color composites in hard copy. Types of changes detected have been: (1) cropland or rangeland developed for new residential areas; (2) rangeland converted to new cropland; and (3) possibly new areas of industrial or commercial development. A map of land use previously compiled from air photos was updated in this manner.

Geographic applications of ERTS-1 data to landscape change

The analysis of landscape change requires large area coverage on a periodic basis in order to analyze aggregate changes over an extended period of time. To date, only the ERTS program can provide this capability. Three avenues of experimentation and analysis are being used in the investigation: (1) a multi-scale sampling procedure utilizing aircraft imagery for ground truth and control; (2) a densitometric and computer analytical experiment for the analysis of gray tone signatures, comparisons and ultimately for landscape change detection and monitoring; and (3) an ERTS image enhancement procedure for the detection and analysis of photomorphic regions.

Mg/2+/-Fe/2+/ order-disorder in cummingtonite, /Mg, Fe/7Si8O22/OH/2 - A new geothermometer.

Determination of the temperature dependence of the Mg(2+)-Fe(2+) distribution between the M4 site and the M1, M2 and M3 sites in magnesium-rich cummingtonites by Fe-57 Mossbauer resonance spectroscopy. For the basic reversible ion-exchange reaction involved, the Gibbs free energy is estimated to be 3.6 to 4.1 kcal/mole, assuming an ideal solution model at each set of sites. The crystallization temperatures of two cummingtonite-bearing metamorphosed ultrabasic rocks are estimated to be 265 and 290 deg C. The Mossbauer resonance spectra are found to be an effective basis for detecting changes in site occupancies as a function of temperature.

Volcanic activity and satellite-detected thermal anomalies at Central American volcanoes

The author has identified the following significant results. A large nuee ardente eruption occurred at Santiaguito volcano, within the test area on 16 September 1973. Through a system of local observers, the eruption has been described, reported to the international scientific community, extent of affected area mapped, and the new ash sampled. A more extensive report on this event will be prepared. The eruption is an excellent example of the kind of volcanic situation in which satellite thermal imagery might be useful. The Santiaguito dome is a complex mass with a whole series of historically active vents. It's location makes access difficult, yet its activity is of great concern to large agricultural populations who live downslope. Santiaguito has produced a number of large eruptions with little apparent warning. In the earlier ground survey large thermal anomalies were identified at Santiaguito. There is no way of knowing whether satellite monitoring could have detected changes in thermal anomaly patterns related to this recent event, but the position of thermal anomalies on Santiaguito and any changes in their character would be relevant information.

Land use mapping and modelling for the Phoenix Quadrangle

The author has identified the following significant results. Changes in the land use in the Phoenix (1:250,000 scale) Quadrangle in Arizona have been mapped using only the images from ERTS-1, tending to verify the utility of a land use classification system proposed for use with ERTS images. Seasonal changes were studied on successive ERTS-1 images, particularly large scale color composite transparencies for August, October, February, and May, and this seasonal variation aided delineation of land use boundaries. Types of equipment used to aid interpretation included color additive viewer, a twenty-power magnifier, a density slicer, and a diazo copy machine. A Zoom Transfer Scope was used for scale and photogrammetric adjustments. Types of changes detected have been: (1) cropland or rangeland developed as new residential areas; (2) rangeland converted to new cropland or to new reservoirs; and (3) possibly new activity by the mining industries. A map of land use previously compiled from air photos was updated in this manner. ERTS-1 images complemented air photos: the photos gave detail on a one-shot basis; the ERTS-1 images provided currency and revealed seasonal variation in vegetation which aided interpretation of land use.

ERTS-1 flood hazard studies in the Mississippi River Basin

The Spring 1973 Mississippi River flood was investigated using remotely sensed data from ERTS-1. Both manual and automatic analyses of the data indicate that ERTS-1 is extremely useful as a regional tool for flood and floodplain management. The maximum error of such flood area measurements is conservatively estimated to be less than five percent. Change detection analysis indicates that the flood had major impacts on soil moisture, land pattern stability, and vegetation stress. Flood hazard identification was conducted using photointerpretation techniques in three study areas along the Mississippi River using pre-flood ERTS-1 imagery down to 1:100,000 scale. Flood prone area boundaries obtained from ERTS-1 were generally in agreement with flood hazard maps produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Geological Survey although the latter are somewhat more detailed because of their larger scale. Initial results indicate that ERTS-1 digital mapping of the flood-prone areas can be performed at least 1:62,500 which is comparable to conventional flood hazard map scales.

Optical spectra and the mass of SMC X-1

Photographic spectral data are presented for Sanduleak 160, an SMC B-type supergiant with which the strong binary X-ray source SMC X-1 is identified. These data show several important features: (1) Emission is conspicuously present at 4686 A at phases 0.1-0.3 and 0.7-0.85 (where phase 0.0 denotes X-ray eclipse) and undetectable near phase 0.5; (2) the emission has a large amplitude in velocity approximately out of phase with the expected motion of the primary star; (3) the absorption spectrum does not show any detectable change in spectral type throughout the orbit. The basic parameters of the system are studied on the basis of the new data, and a mass of near 2 solar masses is computed for the X-ray object. The data also furnish a number of constraints for models of the system.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 data applications to geologic mapping, structural analysis and mineral resource inventory of South America with special emphasis on the Andes Mountain region

The author has identified the following significant results. A color composite of image E1010-14035, dated 2 August 1972, covers the west central Bolivian Altiplano near Salar de Coipasa. It clearly shows the distribution of surface water and scant patches of vegetation. The Salar de Coipasa is the largest body of water in the area, about 130 sq km of dark blue fresh water. A lighter blue area south of the lake suggests a thin cover of highly saline water superposed on salt beds. The scattered vegetation patches are presumed to be native grasses, lichens, and possibly Indian potato and maiz areas. A detailed study has been made of the scene which provides 12 different interpretive overlays including geology, volcanology, soils, hydrology, and relative permeability. It was found that color composites provide at least 40% more information that do black and white renditions. An excellent example of change detection was provided by image E1244-14051, dated 24 March 1973. Water in the Salar de Coipasa had more than doubled as a result of the rains of the Bolivian winter, which generally occur in the February-March period. The Salars are excellent and highly sensitive moisture indicators in this highly arid region.

Characteristics of anvil-top associated with the Poplar Bluff tornado of 7 May 1973

Investigation of potential tornado-producing thunderstorms was performed during part of the 1972 and 1973 tornado seasons. On May 7, 1973 twenty-one tornadoes were confirmed over southern Missouri, northern Arkansas, and southwestern Illinois. The region was surveyed by high altitude photography performed on a Learjet over the region of reported tornadoes. Two storms were chosen from aircraft observation with the guidance of ground and radar reports, and a series of photographs were taken of a tornado producing cloud. An analysis of the activity before and during the tornado is made, and most noteworthy were changes detected in the growth and collapse of overshooting domes above the anvil. Suggestions are included for a comprehensive study.

Skylab and ERTS-1 investigations of coastal land-use and water properties in Delaware Bay

Study of coastal land use and water properties of Delaware Bay using digital and visual analysis of enhanced imagery from NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) and from the Skylab Earth Resources Experimental Package (EREP). ERTS is shown to have the advantage of repetitive coverage of the test site which facilitates change detection experiments by gathering data under a variety of tidal, seasonal, and atmospheric conditions. Skylab-EREP data, on the other hand, are superior in both spatial and spectral resolution.

Snow cover monitoring by machine processing of multitemporal LANDSAT MSS data

LANDSAT frames were geometrically corrected and data sets from six different dates were overlaid to produce a 24 channel (six dates and four wavelength bands) data tape. Changes in the extent of the snowpack could be accurately and easily determined using a change detection technique on data which had previously been classified by the LARSYS software system. A second phase of the analysis involved determination of the relationship between spatial resolution or data sampling frequency and accuracy of measuring the area of the snowpack.

Second generation digital techniques for processing LANDSAT MSS data

Results are reported for precision corrected LANDSAT MSS full scene registration of better than 0.5 picture element (rms), utilizing all digital methods. Examples of such registered full scene images are presented and evaluated by two methods: (1) change detection imagery which represents pixel by pixel the difference of corresponding pixel values in the registered data; and (2) direct measurement of registration errors throughout the imagery by means of a highly accurate cross correlation algorithm. Subscene image details illustrate the impact on registration accuracy of two interpolation algorithms.

Increased concentration of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus sp. in small animals exposed to aerospace environments

The effects of increased concentrations of PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA AND STAPHYLOCOCCUS in the total bacterial flora of small animals exposed to simulated spacecraft environments were evaluated. Tests to detect changes in infectivity, effects of antibiotic treatments, immune responses to bacterial antigens, and effectiveness of immune responses in the experimental environment were conducted. The most significant results appear to be the differences in immune responses at simulated altitudes and the production of infection in the presence of a specific antibody.
