New Results on Communication- and Memory-Aware Load Balancing Model and Algorithms

While load balancing in distributed-memory computing has been well-studied, we present an innovative approach to this problem: a unified, reduced-order model that combines three key components to describe “work” in a distributed system: computation, communication, and memory. Our model enables an optimizer to explore complex tradeoffs in task placement, such as augmented parallelism, at the expense of data replication increasing memory usage. We propose a fully distributed, heuristic-based load balancing optimization algorithm, and demonstrate that it quickly finds close-to-optimal solutions. We formalize the complex optimization problem as a mixed-integer linear program, and compare it to our strategy. Finally, we show that when applied to an electromagnetics code, our approach obtains up to 2.3x speedups for the imbalanced execution.

A ‘Nuclear Bomb’ or Just ‘a Joke’? Groundwater Models May Help Communicate Nuanced Risks to the Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake entered the zeitgeist of environmental concern in 2022 when a coalition of scientists and activists warned in a highly publicized report that the lake might be just five years away from complete desiccation, a possibility one state official warned was tantamount to an “environmental nuclear bomb”. Shortly thereafter, an unpredicted and unprecedented pluvial winter resulted in an increase in inflow, temporarily halting the lake’s decline and prompting Utah’s governor to mock the dire prediction as “a joke”, an outcome that speaks to the tension between agenda-setting and trust-building that researchers face when sharing worst-case warnings, particularly those based on short-term variability. Here, we describe a robust relationship between the lake and groundwater in the surrounding region and demonstrate how coupled models can thus be used to improve lake elevation predictions, suggesting that while the situation may not be as dire as some have warned, the lake remains at long-term risk as a result of climate warming. We further suggest that efforts to communicate the risk of future desiccation should be informed by stochastic variability and guided by long-term fluctuations in the total water storage of the endorheic lake’s watershed.

Streaming authentication and multi-level security for communications networks using quantum cryptography

Message authenticators for quantum-secured communications facilitate low-latency authentication with assurances of security. Low-latency message authenticators are especially valuable in infrastructure systems where security and latency constraints are difficult to satisfy with conventional non-quantum cryptography. For example, a message transmitter receives a message and derives an authentication tag for the message based at least in part on an authenticator that uses one or more quantum keys. The message transmitter outputs the message and its authentication tag. A message receiver receives a message and authentication tag for the message. The message receiver derives a comparison tag for the message based at least in part on an authenticator that uses one or more quantum keys. The message receiver checks whether the message is authentic based on a comparison of the authentication tag and the comparison tag. In example implementations, the authenticator uses stream-wise cyclic redundancy code operations.

Lessons Learned Using Iridium to Communicate with a CubeSat in Low Earth Orbit

This paper presents the design and approval process for operating an Iridium transceiver on orbit and provide on-orbit performance data obtained from a CubeSat platform in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) (500 km orbit). On-orbit data demonstrates that use of a commercial, low-cost Iridium transceiver can serve as a valuable communication approach for low volume telemetry with less than a 30-minute lag for approximately 90% of the time. In this work, we also demonstrate that a radial differential velocity of 7 km/sec corresponding to about a 37.5kHz doppler shift and a distance of less than 2,000 km can be used for mission planning.

Deployable sensor system using mesh networking and satellite communication

A sensor system may be configured for continuous operation in a low resource environment and/or in extreme environmental conditions. The sensor system may have sufficient processing capabilities to provide scientific computing for pre-processing, quality control, statistical analysis, event classification, data compression and corrections (e.g., spikes in the data), autonomous decisions and actions, triggering other nodes, and information assurance functions that provide data confidentiality, data integrity, authentication, and non-repudiation. The hardware may have both mesh networking and satellite and cellular communication capability, and may be available for relatively low cost. Such a network provides the flexibility to have potentially any number of nodes be completely independent from one another. Thus, the network may scale across a diverse terrain.

Moving target defense for a serial communications system

A moving target defense scheme for a serial communications system is disclosed herein. A bus controller generates and broadcasts a nonce to remote terminals over a bus. The bus controller and the remote terminals generate a randomized sequence based upon the nonce and a shared secret that is shared between the bus controller and the remote terminals. The bus controller broadcasts first messages over the bus on first addresses that are derived from first portions of the randomized sequence. The remote terminals listen for the first messages that are broadcast over the bus on the first addresses. The bus controller broadcasts a shift message that causes the remote terminals to listen for second messages that are broadcast over the bus on second addresses that are derived from second portions of the randomized sequence.

Vector send operation for message-based communication

Methods and systems for conducting vector send operations are provided. The processor of a sender node receives a request to perform a collective send operation (e.g., MPI_Broadcast) from a user application, requesting a copy of data in one or more send buffers by sent to each of a plurality of destinations in a destination vector. The processor invokes a vector send operation from a software communications library, placing a remote enqueue atomic send command for each destination node of the destination vector in an entry of a transmit data mover (XDM) command queue in a single call. The processor executes all of the commands in the XDM command queue and writes the data in the one or more send buffers into each receive queue of each destination identified in the destination vector.

Carrier and sampling frequency offset estimation for RF communication with crystal-less nodes

When the ultra-low power mm-scale sensor node does not have a crystal oscillator and phase-lock loop, it inevitably exhibits significant carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO) with respect to the reference frequencies in the gateway. This disclosure enables efficient real-time calculation of accurate SFO and CFO at the gateway, thus the ultra-low power mm-scale sensor node can be realized without a costly and bulky clock reference crystal and also power-hungry phase lock loop. In the proposed system, the crystal-less sensor starts transmission with repetitive RF pulses with a constant interval, followed by the data payload using pulse-position modulation (PPM). A proposed algorithm uses a two-dimensional (2D) fast Fourier transform (FFT) based process that identifies the SFO and CFO at the same time to establish successful wireless communication between the gateway and crystal-less sensor nodes.

Resilient Distributed Frequency Regulation of Renewable Generators under Communication Interruptions

Modern power systems (MPSs) face significant challenges due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and new types of loads such as electric vehicles (EVs). Traditional load frequency control (LFC) methods struggle with the intermittent, stochastic nature of RESs, the near-zero inertia of power-electronics-based generators, and the mobility of controllable loads and battery systems. This paper introduces a novel resilient distributed frequency regulation method to address these issues. The proposed method employs a state space model to represent the dynamic behavior of participating power sources while accounting for stochastic switching processes to model structural and parameter variations caused by disruptions such as generator connection/disconnection, communication interruptions, and physical faults. By integrating these dynamic and stochastic components, the method treats power grids as a comprehensive stochastic hybrid system. Our method enhances conventional frequency control by incorporating local stability control, neighborhood control decoupling, and coordination feedback. Theoretical analyses establish the stability, convergence, and resilience of the proposed method, and its effectiveness is validated through case studies.
