Doppler imaging of active regions on AR Lacertae

The eclipsing RS CVn system AR Lacertae was observed with IUE in October 1981 and October 1983. The phase coverage provided by the 1983 data is adequate to determine the location and size of two plage-like regions in the atmosphere of the K star using a Doppler imaging analysis of the Mg II k lines. A third epoch data set, consisting of many spectra spaced uniformly throughout a single orbital cycle was obtained in September 1985. Rotational modulation of the SWP line fluxes and an initial look at the Mg II lines reveals clear evidence of discrete chromospheric structures. These include a localized flare on the G star, a chromospherically inactive hemisphere on the G star, and plages on the K star.

Rotational modulation and flares on RS CVn and BY Dra-type stars. I - Photometry and spot models for BY Dra, AU Mic, AR Lac, II Peg and V 711 Tau (= HR 1099)

Multicolor wide-band photometry of five active stars is presented. The observations were carried out at several places before, during and after the period of IUE observations for the purpose of determining the location, sizes, and evolution of photospheric spots at the time when chromospheric, transition region, and coronal activity data were obtained from UV and radio observations. II Peg, BY Dra, and AU Mic show fairly stable quasi-sinusoidal light curves, while AR Lac and V 711 Tau show double-peaked light curves. For V 711 Tau, a remarkable evolution of the spotted area extent and/or longitude distribution is found. Small, but definite color variations that are consistent with the cool spot hypothesis have also been detected for BY Dra, II Peg and V 711 Tau.

Oscillator strengths for Ar VII, Ca IX and Fe XV

The excitation energies and oscillator strengths are calculated for electric-dipole-allowed and intercombination transitions between 3s2 1S, 3s3p(1,3)P0, 3p2 3P, 1D, 1S and 3s3d(1,3)D states in Ar VII, Ca IX, and Fe XV ions of the magnesium sequence. These states are represented by the fairly large configuration-interaction expansions. The calculations have been carried out in both LS and intermediate coupling schemes. The relativistic corrections have been included through the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. The results are compared with previous theoretical calculations and with measurements.

Rotational modulation and flares on RS CVn and BY Dra stars. VI - Physical parameters of the chromospheres/transition regions of V 711 Tau (HR 1099), II Peg and AR Lac during October 1981

Ground-based optical and IUE satellite-ultraviolet observations of three RS CVn stars are combined with density sensitive line ratios and differential emission measure curves to describe the physical conditions in their outer atmospheres. Solar-like densities are found to be representative of average conditions on two of the stars, V 711 Tau and AR Lac. The total radiative losses from these two stars are estimated and found to be larger than the sun by at least two orders of magnitude. Consideration of the volume emitting in two of the principal transition region lines suggests a possible relation between the disk 'filling factor' for these two lines and the dynamo-related Rossby number. Only one hemisphere of the star II Peg, the one showing least evidence of starspots, is similar. On the opposite hemisphere the presence of a discrete emitting region is deduced which is almost coincident in phase with the passage of the dominant optical spot group across the visible disk. The dimensions of this region, and an illustrative interpretation in terms of a large emitting magnetic loop, are discussed. It is compared to large active region loops on the sun.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of the optogalvanic effect in a Hg-Ar discharge

The optogalvanic effect induced in a Hg-Ar discharge by light at 546.1 nm is studied experimentally and theoretically. The plasma and its response to a disturbance in the atomic-level populations are described entirely in terms of electron collision cross sections and other fundamental parameters. In a detailed description of the laser interaction with the atomic system, it was necessary to take into account velocity-changing collisions (VCC). These collisions (VCC) strongly modify the interaction between the Doppler-broadened system and the optical field. In some Doppler-free optogalvanic spectra the dramatic influence of VCC on the velocity distribution of atomic-level population is evident. Measurements of the magnitude of the optogalvanic signal confirm most of the theoretical results. Some anomalous features of the impedance change due to a weak beam were observed when a strong counterpropagating beam was introduced.

Rotational modulation and flares on RS CVn and BY Dra stars. IV - The spatially resolved chromosphere of AR Lacertae

The authors observed the RS Canum Venaticorum system AR Lacertae systematically over an orbital period with the International Ultraviolet Explorer in October 1983. Contemporaneous radio observations were obtained at the VLA. The spectra of the Mg II k emission line were analyzed using a Doppler imaging technique. In this way, three discrete regions of emission were identified in the outer atmosphere of the K star-two 'plages' and a chromospheric brightening that was related to a radio flare. The widths of the plage profiles indicate that the two plages together cover about 2 percent of the visible stellar hemisphere, and their v sin i values indicate that they lie close to the equator of the K star. The Mg II k surface flux in the plages is about five times the mean Mg II k surface flux of the K star.

Doppler imaging of AR Lacertae at three epochs

Observations from IUE were used to study the structure of the lower chromosphere of AR Lacertae in the light of Mg II k. Sequences of LWR/P-HI images distributed around the binary period at three epochs were obtained. Discrete plage-like regions of enhanced Mg II surface flux in this system are identified. There are temporal variations in the Mg II flux on timescales of hours as well as substantial changes in chromospheric morphology on timescales of years. Even with the limited S/N attainable with the IUE, one can map the gross structures of active stellar atmospheres. With such information, one can begin to study the true 3-D structure of the atmospheres of late-type stars.

Elimination of projection effects from vector magnetograms - The pre-flare configuration of active region AR 4474

A simple method of transforming vector magnetograms to heliographic coordinates is demonstrated. The merits of this transformation are illustrated using a vector magnetogram obtained with the MSFC vector magnetograph 80 minutes prior to a white light flare in active region AR 4474 on April 25, 1984. The original magnetogram shows strong magnetic shear along the neutral line at both the flare site and a nonflaring site. The transformation of the magnetogram to heliographic coordinates shows that the elimination of projection effects results in a much shorter length of the sheared region at the nonflaring site than what is inferred from the image plane vector magnetogram. The length of the sheared region at the flare site is relatively less affected by the transformation.

A constant-alpha force-free-field analysis of the active region AR 4711 of February, 1986

The theory of Yang et al. (1983) is used to analyze the large active region AR 4711 of Feb. 1986. This region stored between 0.01 x 10 to the 32nd and 5.36 x 10 to the 32nd erg of extractable free magnetic energy, sufficient to supply the energies of the observed flare activities in this region. The region was an energetic quadrupolar sunspot group, occurring during solar minimum; this group was strongly twisted and produced many intense flares.

Rotational modulation and flares on RS Canum Venaticorum and BY Draconis stars. XI - Ultraviolet spectral images of AR Lacertae in September 1985

High-resolution IUE SWP and LWP spectra of the bright eclipsing RS CVn system AR Lac, obtained during 40 h of continuous observations on September 18-19, 1985, are compiled and used to derive chromosphere images. The data and results are presented graphically and discussed in detail. The K 0 IV star is found to have a globally brighter trailing hemisphere and at least three distinct plage regions; the G 2 IV star has a flaring region with significant redshift and line-emission broadening and exhibits factor-of-3 variability in total emission, attributed to the presence of a large chromospherically inactive region.

Photoacoustic measurement of differential broadening of the Lambda doublets in NO(X 2Pi 1/2,v = 2-0) by Ar

A differential broadening of the Lambda doublets in the v = 2-0 overtone band of the 2pi1/2 ground electronic state of NO in an Ar buffer gas has been observed by photoacoustic spectroscopy using a tunable color-center laser. The broadening coefficients for the f symmetry components are larger than for the e symmetry components by up to about 6 percent for J of about 16.5. This differential depends on J and vanishes at low J, implicating the anisotropy of the unpaired electron Pi orbital in the plane of rotation. The 2Pi3/2 transitions are slightly broader than the 2Pi1/2 as a result of spin-flipping collisional relaxation. The observed line shapes also exhibit collisional or Dicke narrowing due to velocity-changing collisions.

The 10.7-cm microwave observations of AR 5395 and related terrestrial effects

The 10.7 cm flux patrols in Canada recorded 4 Great Bursts (peaks greater than 500 sfu) during the disk passage of AR 5395 in March 1989. The Great Bursts of 16 and 17 March were simple events of great amplitude and with half-life durations of only several minutes. Earlier Great Bursts, originating on 6 March towards the NE limb and on 10 March closer to the central meridian, belong to an entirely different category of event. Each started with a very strong impulsive event lasting just minutes. After an initial recovery, however, the emission climbed back to level as greater or greater than the initial impulsive burst. The events of 6 and 10 March stayed above the Great Burst threshold for at least 100 minutes. The second component of long duration in these cases is associated with Type 4 continuum emission and thus very likely with CMEs. Major geomagnetic disturbances did not occur as a result of the massive complex event of 6 March or the two simple but strong events of 16 and 17 March. But some 55 hours after the peak in the long-enduring burst of 10 March, a storm began which qualifies as the fourth strongest geomagnetic storm in Canada since 1932. The vertical component of the earth's field measured during the storm by a fluxgate magnetometer at a station in Manitoba is presented. Within a minute of the sudden commencement of this storm, a series of breakdowns began in the transmission system of Hydro-Quebec which resulted in a total loss of power, on a bitterly cold winter's day, for at least 10 hours. The loss of power provoked an enormous outcry from the public resulting in the power utilities being more receptive to the need to monitor solar as well as geomagnetic activity.

Hard x ray highlights of AR 5395

Active Region 5395 produced an exceptional series of hard x ray bursts notable for their frequency, intensity, and impulsivity. Over the two weeks from March 6 to 19, 447 hard x ray flares were observed by the Hard X Ray Burst Spectrometer on Solar Maximum Mission (HXRBS/SMM), a rate of approx. 35 per day which exceeded the previous high by more than 50 percent. During one 5 day stretch, more than 250 flares were detected, also a new high. The three largest GOES X-flares were observed by HXRBS and had hard x ray rates over 100,000 s(exp -1) compared with only ten flares above 100,000(exp -1) during the previous nine years of the mission. An ongoing effort for the HXRBS group has been the correlated analysis of hard x ray data with flare data at other wavelengths with the most recent emphasis on those measurements with spatial information. During a series of bursts from AR 5395 at 1644 to 1648 UT on 12 March 1989, simultaneous observations were made by HXRBS and UVSP (Ultra Violet Spectrometer Polarimeter) on SMM, the two-element Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometric array, and R. Canfield's H-alpha Echelle spectrograph at the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak. The data show strong correlations in the hard x ray, microwave, and UV lightcurves. This event will be the subject of a combined analysis.

Mission Report on the Orbiter Camera Payload System (OCPS) Large Format Camera (LFC) and Attitude Reference System (ARS)

The Orbiter Camera Payload System (OCPS) is an integrated photographic system which is carried into earth orbit as a payload in the Space Transportation System (STS) Orbiter vehicle's cargo bay. The major component of the OCPS is a Large Format Camera (LFC), a precision wide-angle cartographic instrument that is capable of producing high resolution stereo photography of great geometric fidelity in multiple base-to-height (B/H) ratios. A secondary, supporting system to the LFC is the Attitude Reference System (ARS), which is a dual lens Stellar Camera Array (SCA) and camera support structure. The SCA is a 70-mm film system which is rigidly mounted to the LFC lens support structure and which, through the simultaneous acquisition of two star fields with each earth-viewing LFC frame, makes it possible to determine precisely the pointing of the LFC optical axis with reference to the earth nadir point. Other components complete the current OCPS configuration as a high precision cartographic data acquisition system. The primary design objective for the OCPS was to maximize system performance characteristics while maintaining a high level of reliability compatible with Shuttle launch conditions and the on-orbit environment. The full-up OCPS configuration was launched on a highly successful maiden voyage aboard the STS Orbiter vehicle Challenger on October 5, 1984, as a major payload aboard mission STS 41-G. This report documents the system design, the ground testing, the flight configuration, and an analysis of the results obtained during the Challenger mission STS 41-G.

Optical transmission through a polarization preserving single mode optical fiber at two Ar(+) laser wavelengths

The transmission characteristics of two Ar(+) laser wavelengths through a twenty meter Panda type Polarization Preserving Single Mode Optical Fiber (PPSMOF) were measured. The measurements were done with both single and multi-longitudinal mode radiation. In the single longitudinal mode case, a degrading Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is observed as a backward scattering loss. By choosing an optimum coupling system and manipulating the input polarization, the threshold of the SBS onset can be raised and the transmission efficiency can be increased.

Neonlike Ar and Cl 3p-3s emission from a theta-pinch plasma

Time-resolved extreme-UV emission from sixteen 3p-3s transitions, some of the type in which lasing has been demonstrated in heavier elements, is measured for neonlike Ar(8+) and Cl(7+). These observations are made on a hydrogen theta-pinch plasma with a 5 pct admixture of argon or freon (for Cl). Fourteen 3d-3p spectral lines are also detected. The measured intensities are compared to theoretical predictions. There is no evidence of anomalously intense lines originating on 2p5 3p J = 2 upper levels compared to J = 0, as observed in gain experiments.

Penning type of ionizing energy transfer collisions in a Hg-Ar discharge detected by the optogalvanic effect

The temporal evolution of the optogalvanic signals has been investigated in detail in a Hg-argon discharge by irradiating it with an excimer pumped dye laser. The signals at 4510.7, 4596 and 4628.4 A exhibited anomalous behavior. Analysis of the data revealed that the excited Ar and Hg atoms respectively in the 1P1 and 3P1 states participated in energy transfer collisions, causing atomic mercury to excite to an ionized energy state, while simultaneously the argon atom relaxes to its ground state.

Theoretical line shapes for rotational spectra of HCl in Ar

An interaction potential for HCl-Ar recently derived from spectra of van der Waals complexes (Hutson,1988) has been used to obtain converged close-coupling scattering S matrices from which pressure broadening (linewidth, line shift, and line coupling) cross sections have been computed within the Fano-Ben-Reuven formalism. Linewidths agree well with experimental data with the exception of the 0-1 line at low temperatures (an error of about 15 percent at 125 K). Line shifts, especially the largest, for the 0-1 line, are also in reasonable accord with experimental data. Line coupling is predicted to be quite small. The coupled-states molecular scattering approximation is found to be accurate except at very low collision energies. The infinite-order sudden approximations, on the other hand, is not reliable for this system. Inelastic scattering out of the spectroscopic levels accounts for only a fraction of the linewidth at thermal energies, especially in the lower rotational levels.
