Test of Lepton Flavor Universality with B + → K + π + π − ℓ + ℓ − Decays

The first test of lepton flavor universality between muons and electrons using B + → K + π + π − ℓ + ℓ − ( ℓ = e , μ ) decays is presented. The measurement is performed with data from proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . The ratio of branching fractions between B + → K + π + π − e + e − and B + → K + π + π − μ + μ − decays is measured in the dilepton invariant-mass-squared range 1.1 < q 2 < 7.0 GeV 2 / c 4 and is found to be R K π π − 1 = 1.3 1 − 0.17 + 0.18 ( stat ) − 0.09 + 0.12 ( syst ) , in agreement with the standard model prediction. The first observation of the B + → K + π + π − e + e − decay is also reported. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Cyclic phase transition of substrate-modulated two-dimensional dusty plasma driven by gyroscopic forces

Langevin dynamical simulations are performed to investigate the formation of clusters and voids of a two-dimensional periodic substrate (2DPS)-modulated two-dimensional dusty plasma (2DDP) driven by a gyroscopic force. It is discovered that, as the frequency of the gyroscopic force decreases gradually, the substrate-modulated 2DDP undergoes the cyclic transition between the ordered cluster and void phases. Between the observed ordered cluster and void phases, the studied 2DDP exhibits a more uniform arrangement of particles. The discovered cyclic transition is attributed to the symmetry of the time-averaged potential landscape induced by the 2DPS in the reference frame of the moving particle, as confirmed by superimposing the particle locations on the effective potential landscape under various conditions.

Precision measurement of the $Ξ^0_b$ baryon lifetime

A sample of 𝑝⁢𝑝 collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1 and collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Run 2, is used to measure the ratio of the lifetime of the $Ξ^0_b$ baryon to that of the $Λ^0_b$ baryon, 𝑟 𝜏 $≡$ $𝜏_{Ξ^0_b}$$/𝜏_{Λ^0_b}$. The value 𝑟$^{\textrm{Run 2}}_𝜏$ =1.004 ± 0.009 ± 0.006 is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This value is averaged with the corresponding value from Run 1 to obtain 𝑟 𝜏 =1.004 ± 0.008 ± 0.005. Multiplying by the known value of the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime yields $𝜏_{Ξ^0_b}$ = 1.475 ± 0.012 ± 0.008 ± 0.009 ps, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime. This measurement improves the precision of the current world average of the $Ξ^0_b$ lifetime by about a factor of two, and is in good agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions.

Neuralized fermionic tensor networks for quantum many-body systems

In this work, we describe a class of neuralized fermionic tensor network states (NN-fTNSs) that introduce nonlinearity into fermionic tensor networks through configuration-dependent neural network transformations of the local tensors. The construction uses the fTNS algebra to implement a natural fermionic sign structure and is compatible with standard tensor network algorithms but gains enhanced expressivity through the neural network parametrization. Using the 1D and 2D Fermi-Hubbard models as benchmarks, we demonstrate that NN-fTNSs achieve order of magnitude improvements in the ground-state energy compared to pure fTNSs with the same bond dimension and can be systematically improved through both the tensor network bond dimension and the neural network parametrization. Compared to existing fermionic neural quantum states based on Slater determinants and Pfaffians, NN-fTNSs offer a physically motivated alternative fermionic structure. Furthermore, compared to such states, NN-fTNSs naturally exhibit improved computational scaling and we demonstrate a construction that achieves linear scaling with the lattice size.

Subharmonic Shapiro steps in depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional solid dusty plasma modulated by one-dimensional nonlinear deformed periodic substrates

Langevin dynamical simulations are performed to investigate the depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasma, which is modulated by one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear deformed periodic substrates, and also driven by the combination of the DC and AC forces. As the DC driving force increases gradually, pronounced subharmonic and harmonic Shapiro steps are discovered under the combined modulation of the deformed substrate and the external AC drive. Here, these observed subharmonic and harmonic Shapiro steps are attributed to the dynamic mode locking. The data analysis results indicate that the nonlinear deformed substrate strongly influences these subharmonic Shapiro steps, which can be accurately diagnosed using the fraction of sixfold coordinated particles. Furthermore, the diagnostic of the kinetic temperature clearly indicates the difference between harmonic and subharmonic Shapiro steps, i.e., the particle motion is slightly less synchronized at subharmonic Shapiro steps, caused by the unstable locations of the deformed substrate.

Hardware Design and Demonstration of a 100kW, 99% Efficiency Dual Active Half Bridge Converter Based on 1700V SiC Power MOSFET

High efficiency, high density and galvanically isolated power converters are attractive for numerous medium voltage high power applications. This paper presents a 1.5kVdc, 100kW bidirectional Dual Active Half Bridge (DAHB) using newly developed 1.7kV SiC MOSFET modules. The DAHB achieved an efficiency of 98.6% at full load of 100kW and a maximum of 99% at 45kW, operating as an isolated DC/DC converter. The converter also achieved an efficiency of 97.8% operating as an isolated DC/AC inverter. An optimized PCB-based busbar design has significantly reduced the voltage overshoot across the device, making the design suitable for 1500Vdc input application such as 1500V PV inverters. Typical partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) of the optimized PCB busbar is 1.7kVpeak with total charge <10pC. The power density of the DAHB converter is 1.8MVA/m 3 which is much higher than traditional two-stage industry products. The DAHB converter can be used as a building block for a 4.16kV/1MVA utility scale PV systems with input parallel and output series configuration.

Real-time Implementation of a Dual-Active-Bridge Based Multi-Level Photovoltaic Converter

Silicon-carbide based, multi-level converters with dual-active-bridge (DAB) are getting attention for medium voltage, direct grid-connected, utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) applications due to their higher efficiency and power density. To de-risk complex control development for these high-voltage and high-power inverters, hardware-in-the-loop techniques are often required. Due to the high switching frequency and the large number of power electronic switches, off-the-shelf, real-time simulation tools are not yet fully developed for this application, even with FPGA-based simulators. To address this, a new co-simulation approach in FPGA is presented that utilizes Time-Stamped Bridge (TSB) for the higher frequency converters along with detailed fixed conductance based discrete device simulation of the rest of the circuit. A complex DAB-based PV converter with maximum switching frequency of 50 kHz is successfully simulated in real-time in the FPGA and the results are compared with offline simulation results. A controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) platform is developed to demonstrate real-time, closed-loop test results for this DAB-based PV converter.

Nanofabrication of silicon surfaces for reduced virus adhesion

Nanofabrication is a remarkably effective technique to create desirable nanoscale patterns. Here, the effect of surface nanofabrication on altering virus adhesion to the substrates was examined. Arrays of nanoholes, 50 nm in diameter, 22 nm deep, and 100 nm in pitch distance, were created on silicon (Si) wafers by electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. MS2 coliphage, which is 26 ± 2 nm in diameter and is frequently used as a surrogate for human viruses, was applied to investigate the interaction between the virions and smooth or nanostructured Si surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy along with surface wettability analyses revealed that the nanofabrication had the effect of reducing not only the number of viruses attached but also the strength of virus adhesion. These effects were ascribed to the presence of nanoholes, which were inaccessible to the virions due to the unique surface topographical parameters and the surface chemistry, resulting in the decrease of the overall solid contact area for MS2 attachment. The periodic spacing of the nanoholes also limited the unit landing area for MS2 particles, restricting the formation of MS2 aggregates and leading to the reduced amount of MS2 attachment. We anticipate that smart design of a surface’s chemical composition and nanostructure will offer a feasible solution to improve mitigations for controlling viral adhesion and transmission to and from food contact surfaces.

Direct visualization of electromagnetic wave dynamics by laser-free ultrafast electron microscopy

Integrating femtosecond lasers with electron microscopies has enabled direct imaging of transient structures and morphologies of materials in real time and space. Here, we report the development of a laser-free ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM) offering the same capability but without requiring femtosecond lasers and intricate instrumental modifications. We create picosecond electron pulses for probing dynamic events by chopping a continuous beam with a radio frequency (RF)–driven pulser with the pulse repetition rate tunable from 100 MHz to 12 GHz. As a first application, we studied gigahertz electromagnetic wave propagation dynamics in an interdigitated comb structure. We reveal, on nanometer space and picosecond time scales, the transient oscillating electromagnetic field around the tines of the combs with time-resolved polarization, amplitude, and local field enhancement. This study demonstrates the feasibility of laser-free UEM in real-space visualization of dynamics for many research fields, especially the electrodynamics in devices associated with information processing technology.

A study of $CP$ violation in the decays $B^±$ → [$K^+ K^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$ ($h$ = $K, π$) and $B^±$ → [$π^+π^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$

The first study of CP violation in the decay mode $B^±$ → [$K^+ K^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$, with $h$ = $K, π$, is presented, exploiting a data sample of proton–proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . The analysis is performed in bins of phase space, which are optimised for sensitivity to local CP asymmetries. CP-violating observables that are sensitive to the angle γ of the Unitarity Triangle are determined. The analysis requires external information on charm-decay parameters, which are currently taken from an amplitude analysis of LHCb data, but can be updated in the future when direct measurements become available. Measurements are also performed of phase-space integrated observables for $B^±$ → [$K^+ K^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$ and $B^±$ → [$π^+π^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$ decays.

Charmonium production in $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5$ GeV

The measurement of charmonium states produced in proton-neon (pNe) collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The pro duction of J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 21.7 ± 1.4 nb -1 . The J/ψ and ψ(2S) hadrons are reconstructed in μ + μ - final states. The J/ψ production cross-section per target nucleon in the centre-of mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29, 0] is found to be 506 ± 8 ± 46 nb/nucleon. The ratio of J/ψ and D 0 cross-sections is evaluated to (1.06 ± 0.02 ± 0.09)%. The ψ(2S) to J/ψ relative production rate is found to be (1.67 ± 0.27 ± 0.10)% in good agreement with other measurements involving beam and target nuclei of similar sizes.

Measurement of $\tau _\text {L}$ using the ${B} _s^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \eta$ decay mode

Using a proton–proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.7~\text {fb}^{-1}$ , the lifetime of the light ${{B} ^0_{s}}$ mass eigenstate, $\tau _{L}$ , is measured using the $B^0_s \rightarrow J/\psi \eta$ decay mode to be $\begin{aligned} \tau _{\text {L}} = 1.445 \pm 0.016 \text {(stat)} \pm 0.008 \text {(syst)} \,\text {ps}. \end{aligned}$ A combination of this result with a previous LHCb analysis using an independent dataset corresponding to 3 fb –1 of integrated luminosity gives $\begin{aligned} \tau _{\text {L}} = 1.452 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.002 \,\text {ps}, \end{aligned}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second due to the uncorrelated part of the systematic uncertainty and the third due to the correlated part of the systematic uncertainty.

Open charm production and asymmetry in p Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle {\textrm{NN}}}}$ = 68.5 GeV

A measurement of D 0 meson production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of D 0 mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on a gaseous neon target at rest, corresponding to a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The sum of the D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production cross-section in pNe collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29,0] is found to be $σ^{y* ϵ [-2.29,0]}_{D^0}$ = 48.2 ± 0.3 ± 4.5 μb/nucleon where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative y*. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1% intrinsic charm and 10% recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.

Measurement of antiproton production from antihyperon decays in ${p} \textrm{He}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \mathrm NN}} =110$ GeV

The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and 110 GeV/c. The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely ${\overline{\varLambda }} \rightarrow {\overline{{p}}} {{\pi } ^+}$ decays from promptly produced $\overline{\varLambda }$ particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than predictions of commonly used hadronic production models.

${{J}/\psi }$ and ${{D}} ^0$ production in $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5\,\text {GeV} $ PbNe collisions

The first measurement of ${{J}/\psi }$ and ${{D}} ^0$ production in PbNe collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is reported. The production of ${{J}/\psi }$ and ${{D}} ^0$ mesons is studied with a beam of lead ions with an energy of 2.5 TeV per nucleon colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5\,\text {GeV}$. The ${{J}/\psi }$/${{D}} ^0$ production cross-section ratio is studied as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. These data are compared with measurements from $p\text {Ne}$ collisions at the same energy and show no difference in the observed ${{J}/\psi }$ suppression trend when comparing $p\text {Ne}$ and PbNe peripheral collisions with PbNe central collisions. Search for $D^{*}(2007)^{0} \rightarrow \mu ^{+} \mu ^{-}$ in $B^{-}\rightarrow \pi ^{-} \mu ^{+} \mu ^{-}$ decays

The very rare D* (2007) 0 → μ + μ – decay is searched for by analysing B – → μ + μ – decays. The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton–proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the μ + μ – and π – μ + μ – invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at B (D* (2007) 0 → μ + μ – ) < 2.6 x 10 –8 at 90% confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of D* (2007) 0 → μ + μ – decays and the most stringent limit on D* (2007) 0 decays to leptonic final states. The analysis is the first search for a rare charm-meson decay exploiting production via beauty decays.
