Applications technology satellites battery and power system design

A summary of the ATS battery design which is onboard the Applications Technology Satellite (ATS) is provided. The 15 ampere hour nickel cadmium cells were manufactured by Gulton, 19 series connected cells per battery, and there are two batteries in each spacecraft. The operating design life was two years in a synchronous orbit, and a maximum depth of discharge of 50 percent. The design temperature for the batteries in the spacecraft was 0 to 25 C, and the charge control consisted of 1 volt versus temperature on a constant percentage voltage. Also, C/10 current limit, and a commandable trickle charge rate, using C/20 or C/60. The undervoltage was sent across a 9 cell and a 10 cell group, and it was set at one volt average per group on either group.

Development program on a Spindt cold-cathode electron gun

A thin film field emission cathode (TFFEC) array and a cold cathode electron gun based on the emitter were developed. A microwave tube gun that uses the thin film field emission cathode as an electron source is produced. State-of-the-art cathodes were fabricated and tested. The tip-packing density of the arrays were increased thereby increasing the cathode's current density capability. The TFFEC is based on the well known field emission effect and was conceived to exploit the advantages of that phenomenon while minimizing the difficulties associated with conventional field emission structures, e.g. limited life and high voltage requirements. Field emission follows the Fowler-Nordheim equation.

InP shallow-homojunction solar cells

Indium phosphide solar cells with very thin n-type emitters have been made by both ion implantation and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Air mass zero efficiencies as high as 18.8 percent (NASA measurement) have been achieved. Although calculations show that, as is the case with GaAs, a heterostructure is expected to be required for the highest efficiencies attainable, the material properties of InP give the shallow-homojunction structure a greater potential than in the case of GaAs. The best cells, which were those made by ion implantation, show open-circuit voltage (V sub oc) of 873 mV, short-circuit current of 357 A/sq m (35.7 mA/sq cm), and fill factor of 0.829. Improvements are anticipated in all three of these parameters. Internal quantum efficiency peaks at over 90 percent in the red end of the spectrum, but drops to 54 percent in the blue end. Other cells have achieved 74 percent in the blue end. Detailed modeling of the data indicates that a high front surface recombination velocity is responsible for the low blue response, that the carrier lifetime is high enough to allow good carrier collection from both the base and the emitter, and that the voltage is base-limited.

Development of a stable electro-optical modulator

The activity of the sun can be studied through the measurement of its magnetic field. The measurement of the polarization state of the sunlight in a narrow spectral bandwidth can be related to the magnetic fields strengths and directions over the active sunspots. Measuring the polarization state can be done using the vector magnetograph. The essential component of the vector magnetograph is the polarization modulators. Electro-optical modulators are used as dynamic retarders. KDP (potassium dideuterium phosphate) crystals provide variable retardation which can be controlled by the applied voltage. KDP's have a high contrast ratio but suffer some problems; they require a high voltage and have a limited modulation lifetime. The KDP modulator forms the heart of the polarimeter assembly which is used for carrying out accurate measurements of linear polarization of the sun. It is therefore important to study the optical and electrical behavior of the KDP crystals so that the ultimate goal of making stable electro-optical modulators in the laboratory is achieved. A number of activities were performed in coating and testing the KDP crystals. A summary of these activities is given.

Battery Cell By-Pass Circuit

The invention is a circuit and method of limiting the charging current voltage from a power supply net work applied to an individual cell of a plurality of cells making up a battery being charged in series. It is particularly designed for use with batteries that can be damaged by overcharging, such as Lithium-ion type batteries. In detail. the method includes the following steps: 1) sensing the actual voltage level of the individual cell; 2) comparing the actual voltage level of the individual cell with a reference value and providing an error signal representative thereof; and 3) by-passing the charging current around individual cell necessary to keep the individual cell voltage level generally equal a specific voltage level while continuing to charge the remaining cells. Preferably this is accomplished by by-passing the charging current around the individual cell if said actual voltage level is above the specific voltage level and allowing the charging current to the individual cell if the actual voltage level is equal or less than the specific voltage level. In the step of bypassing the charging current, the by-passed current is transferred at a proper voltage level to the power supply. The by-pass circuit a voltage comparison circuit is used to compare the actual voltage level of the individual cell with a reference value and to provide an error signal representative thereof. A third circuit, designed to be responsive to the error signal, is provided for maintaining the individual cell voltage level generally equal to the specific voltage level. Circuitry is provided in the third circuit for bypassing charging current around the individual cell if the actual voltage level is above the specific voltage level and transfers the excess charging current to the power supply net work. The circuitry also allows charging of the individual cell if the actual voltage level is equal or less than the specific voltage level.

The Space Technology 5 Avionics System

The Space Technology 5 (ST5) mission is a NASA New Millennium Program project that will validate new technologies for future space science missions and demonstrate the feasibility of building launching and operating multiple, miniature spacecraft that can collect research-quality in-situ science measurements. The three satellites in the ST5 constellation will be launched into a sun-synchronous Earth orbit in early 2006. ST5 fits into the 25-kilogram and 24-watt class of very small but fully capable spacecraft. The new technologies and design concepts for a compact power and command and data handling (C&DH) avionics system are presented. The 2-card ST5 avionics design incorporates new technology components while being tightly constrained in mass, power and volume. In order to hold down the mass and volume, and quali& new technologies for fUture use in space, high efficiency triple-junction solar cells and a lithium-ion battery were baselined into the power system design. The flight computer is co-located with the power system electronics in an integral spacecraft structural enclosure called the card cage assembly. The flight computer has a full set of uplink, downlink and solid-state recording capabilities, and it implements a new CMOS Ultra-Low Power Radiation Tolerant logic technology. There were a number of challenges imposed by the ST5 mission. Specifically, designing a micro-sat class spacecraft demanded that minimizing mass, volume and power dissipation would drive the overall design. The result is a very streamlined approach, while striving to maintain a high level of capability, The mission's radiation requirements, along with the low voltage DC power distribution, limited the selection of analog parts that can operate within these constraints. The challenge of qualifying new technology components for the space environment within a short development schedule was another hurdle. The mission requirements also demanded magnetic cleanliness in order to reduce the effect of stray (spacecraft-generated) magnetic fields on the science-grade magnetometer.

Design of a Wideband 6-Anode Frequency Tripler at 300 GHz with Optimum Balance

We report on the design methodology of a fix-tuned split-block waveguide balanced frequency tripler working nominally at 300 GHz. It features six GaAs Schottky planar diodes in a balanced configuration. The circuit will be fabricated with JPL membrane technology in order to minimize dielectric loading and insure an accurate and uniform thickness of the substrate. The multiplier power handling is limited by the breakdown voltage of the diodes that depends on the doping level of the active layer. With six diodes, the current choice for the doping level leads to medium power handling capabilities of about 50 mW. Increasing the number of diodes to eight would be an option but would lead to increased difficulties in design and fabrication.

Current rectification based on noncentrosymmetric quantum materials

Rectification is a process that converts electromagnetic fields into direct current (DC). Such a process underlies a wide range of technologies, including wireless communication, wireless charging, energy harvesting, and infrared detection. Existing rectifiers are mostly based on semiconductor diodes, with limited applicability to small voltages or high frequency inputs. Here, we present an alternative approach to current rectification that uses the electronic properties of quantum crystals without semiconductor junctions. We identify a new mechanism for rectification from skew scattering due to the chirality of itinerant electrons in time-reversal-invariant but inversion-breaking materials. Our calculations reveal large, tunable rectification effects in graphene multilayers and transition metal dichalcogenides. These effects can be used in high-frequency rectifiers by rational material design and quantum wavefunction engineering.

Novel Hybrid Current Limiter for Grid-Forming Inverter Control During Unbalanced Faults: Preprint

Grid-forming (GFM) inverter controls have illustrated many desirable features to enable bulk integration of renewable sources into the future power grid. However, the performance of GFM inverters during unbalanced faults remains under-explored. In this paper, a novel current-limiting method is proposed for GFM inverters to handle unbalanced fault conditions while providing voltage support to the main grid. The proposed current limiter combines concepts of dynamic virtual-impedance and current-reference saturation limiting, all built-up in the stationary reference frame to achieve improved current-limiting performance under unbalanced load/fault conditions. System-wide full-order transient simulations with multiple GFM inverters demonstrate the potential of the method and benchmark the performance against state-of-the-art current limiters. Simulation results portray improved voltage balancing performance of the proposed method compared to both current-reference saturation and virtual-impedance limiting.

2 kV Al 0.64 Ga 0.36 N-channel high electron mobility transistors with passivation and field plates

Abstract High voltage (∼2 kV) Al 0.64 Ga 0.36 N-channel high electron mobility transistors were fabricated with an on-resistance of ∼75 Ω. mm (∼21 mΩ. cm 2 ). Two field plates of variable dimensions were utilized to optimize the breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage reached >3 kV (tool limit) before passivation however it reduced to ∼2 kV after Si 3 N 4 surface passivation and field plate deposition. The breakdown voltage and on-resistance demonstrated a strong linear correlation in a scattered plot of ∼50 measured transistors. The fabricated transistors were electrically characterized and benchmarked against the state-of-the-art high-voltage (> 1 kV) Al-rich (>40%) AlGaN-channel transistors in breakdown voltage and on-resistance, indicating significant progress.

Automatic voltage regulation application for PV inverters in low-voltage distribution grids – A digital twin approach

This paper proposes a hierarchical coordinated control strategy for PV inverters to keep voltages in low-voltage (LV) distribution grids within specified limits. The top layer of the proposed architecture consists of the designed automatic voltage regulation (AVR) application, which has access to voltage measurements and grid parameters from the LV distribution grid, both current and historical. The AVR application solves a constrained optimization problem, which provides a set of local control set-points that bring the voltage across the grid within bounds. The middle layer consists of a local Volt/VAR controller, which is adjusted by the AVR app, while the bottom layer is the inner-loop controller of the PV inverter. The proposed method not only improves the voltage quality in the grid but also manages the reactive power outputs of PV inverters efficiently. Further, a digital twin of the cyber-physical system has also been employed that interacts with the control system to ensure its appropriate operation. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated on a representative low-voltage feeder located in Denmark.

Matrix Completion for Improved Observability in Low-Voltage Distribution Grids

This paper considers the problem of recovering missing entries in a partially observed matrix from relatively few measurements (i.e., the so-called matrix completion problem) with the aim of increasing the presently limited observability of low-voltage distribution grids. To this end, the partially observed matrix is formed using scarce voltage magnitude measurements while accounting for their spatial information. Voltage readings are assumed to be collected from distribution utility sensors and/or geographically-distributed cable television network sensors located in immediate proximity to distribution grid nodes. A matrix completion approach built on the parameter-less singular value shrinkage technique is used to estimate voltage magnitudes at otherwise non-observable low-voltage nodes using a small number of single- or multiple-snapshot data. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated using a U.S.-style distribution test system from the synthetic SMART- DS data set under very low- to moderate-observability conditions.

Enabling Stable Cycling of 4.2 V High-Voltage All-Solid-State Batteries with PEO-Based Solid Electrolyte

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid electrolytes are expected to be exploited in solid-state batteries with high safety. Its narrow electrochemical window, however, limits the potential for high voltage and high energy density applications. In this paper, the electrochemical oxidation behavior of PEO and the failure mechanisms of LiCoO 2 -PEO solid-state batteries are studied. It is found that although for pure PEO it starts to oxidize at a voltage of above 3.9 V versus Li/Li + , the decomposition products have appropriate Li + conductivity that unexpectedly form a relatively stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer at the PEO and electrode interface. The performance degradation of the LiCoO 2 -PEO battery originates from the strong oxidizing ability of LiCoO 2 after delithiation at high voltages, which accelerates the decomposition of PEO and drives the self-oxygen-release of LiCoO 2 , leading to the unceasing growth of CEI and the destruction of the LiCoO 2 surface. When LiCoO 2 is well coated or a stable cathode LiMn 0.7 Fe 0.3 PO 4 is used, a substantially improved electrochemical performance can be achieved, with 88.6% capacity retention after 50 cycles for Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 coated LiCoO 2 and 90.3% capacity retention after 100 cycles for LiMn 0.7 Fe 0.3 PO 4 . The results suggest that, when paired with stable cathodes, the PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes could be compatible with high voltage operation.
