A test technique for measuring lightning-induced voltages on aircraft electrical circuits

The development of a test technique used for the measurement of lightning-induced voltages in the electrical circuits of a complete aircraft is described. The resultant technique utilizes a portable device known as a transient analyzer capable of generating unidirectional current impulses similar to lightning current surges, but at a lower current level. A linear relationship between the magnitude of lightning current and the magnitude of induced voltage permitted the scaling up of measured induced values to full threat levels. The test technique was found to be practical when used on a complete aircraft.

Temperature, illumination and fluence dependence of current and voltage in electron irradiated solar cells

Emperical equations have been derived from measurements of solar cell photovoltaic characteristics relating light generated current, IL, and open circuit voltage, VO, to cell temperature, T, intensity of illumination, W, and 1 Mev electron fluence, phi both 2 ohm-cm and 10 ohm-cm cells were tested. The temperature dependency of IL is similar for both resistivities at 140mw/sq cm; at high temperature the coefficient varies with fluence as phi 0.18, while at low temperatures the coefficient is relatively independent of fluence. Fluence dependent degration causes a decrease in IL at a rate proportional to phi 0.153 for both resistivities. At all intensities other than 560 mw/sq cm, a linear dependence of IL on illumination was found. The temperature coefficient of voltage was, to a good approximation, independent of both temperature and illumination for both resistivities. Illumination dependence of VOC was logarithmic, while the decrease with fluence of VOC varied as phi 0.25 for both resistivities.

A theoretical analysis of the current-voltage characteristics of solar cells

The current-voltage characteristics and efficiencies of solar cells are discussed. For one solar cell structure detailed curves are presented which include carrier densities, current densities, potential, and quasi-Fermi levels at different voltage levels both with and without optically generated carriers (AMO conditions). In addition some results are presented concerning the influence of various parameter variations such as lifetime, cell thickness, and high-low junction width on solar cell performance.

A high voltage power supply for the AE-C and D low energy electron experiment

A description is given of the electrical and mechanical design and operation of high voltage power supplies for space flight use. The supply was used to generate the spiraltron high voltage for low energy electron experiment on AE-C and D. Two versions of the supply were designed and built; one design is referred to as the low power version (AE-C) and the other as the high power version (AE-D). Performance is discussed under all operating conditions.

Two-position dc pulse voltage stabilizer

The advantages of the dc pulse voltage stabilizers over the continuous action stabilizers are described. These advantages include higher efficiency, low sensitivity to the ambient temperature and insignificant size and weight. A comparison is made between the schematics of the known two position pulse stabilizer with a Schmitt trigger and that developed by the author. A characteristic feature of the improved system is the increased stabilization coefficient and the possibility of smooth regulation of the output voltage. A practical schematic is presented for the improved two position pulse stabilizer along with its parameters.

Voltage-spike analysis for a free-running parallel inverter

Unwanted and sometimes damaging high-amplitude voltage spikes occur during each half cycle in many transistor saturable-core inverters at the moment when the core saturates and the transistors switch. The analysis shows that spikes are an intrinsic characteristic of certain types of inverters even with negligible leakage inductance and purely resistive load. The small but unavoidable after-saturation inductance of the saturable-core transformer plays an essential role in creating these undesired thigh-voltage spikes. State-plane analysis provides insight into the complex interaction between core and transistors, and shows the circuit parameters upon which the magnitude of these spikes depends.

Internal voltage control of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells: Feasibility study

An experimental study was conducted to assess the feasibility of internal voltage regulation of fuel cell systems. Two methods were tested. In one, reactant partial pressure was used as the voltage control parameter and in the other reactant total pressure was used for control. Both techniques were breadboarded and tested on a single alkaline-electrolyte fuel cell. Both methods were found to be possible forms of regulation, however, of the two the total pressure technique would be more efficient, simpler to apply and would provide better transient characteristics.

Investigation of problems associated with solid encapsulation of high voltage electronic assemblies; also Reynolds connector study

Electric breakdown prevention in vacuum and encapsulation of high voltage electronic circuits was studied. The lap shear method was used to measure adhesive strengths. The permeation constants of air at ambient room temperature through four different space-grade encapsulants was measured. Order of magnitude was calculated for the time that air bubble pressures drop to the corona region. High voltage connectors with L-type cable attached were tested in a vacuum system at various pressures. The cable system was shown to suppress catastrophic breakdown when filled with and surrounded by gas in the corona region of pressures, but did not prove to be completely noise free.

Battery peak charge voltage monitor for dual air density satellite

A battery peak charge voltage monitor was developed for use on the dual air density satellite (DADS). This device retains a reading of the maximum voltage reached by the spacecraft battery during periods of charging, and makes it available during periods of data transmission. The monitor is connected across the battery and operates solely from the battery; it is powered continuously with quiescent input current of only 3 milliamperes. Standard integrated circuits and a thin-film resistor network are utilized. The monitor occupies approximately 40 square centimeters of a printed-circuit board within a larger electronic package.

Modulation linearization of a frequency-modulated voltage controlled oscillator, part 3

An analysis is presented for the voltage versus frequency characteristics of a varactor modulated VHF voltage controlled oscillator in which the frequency deviation is linearized by using the nonlinear characteristics of a field effect transistor as a signal amplifier. The equations developed are used to calculate the oscillator output frequency in terms of pertinent circuit parameters. It is shown that the nonlinearity exponent of the FET has a pronounced influence on frequency deviation linearity, whereas the junction exponent of the varactor controls total frequency deviation for a given input signal. A design example for a 250 MHz frequency modulated oscillator is presented.

High performance dc-dc conversion with voltage multipliers

An experimental 100W 1000V dc-dc converter using a capacitor diode voltage multipler (CDVM) with a nominal frequency of 100 kHz is studied. A component weight of about 1 kg/kW was obtained. Design equations for current, output -ripple and -power, efficiency and output voltage are derived. Agreement between experimental results and calculations is fairly good except for ripple.

The high current transient generator, theory and operation for simulating lightning induced voltages into aerospace electrical circuits

Because of the difficulty, hazard, and cost of simulating full-scale lightning currents on flight vehicles, a nondestructive test technique using reduced-scale lightning currents was used to determine if threat level voltages will be induced into aircraft electrical circuits in the event the aircraft is actually struck by lightning. The reasoning and theory of selecting a particular simulated lightning waveshape and magnitude is given, showing that extrapolation of induced waveforms over several orders of magnitude should be avoided. The operation of high-current transient generators and hardware are described along with typical applications. The means by which voltages were generated, induced, and measured, as well as possible sources of error, are discussed.
