Description of CASCOMP Comprehensive Airship Sizing and Performance Computer Program, Volume 2

The computer program CASCOMP, which may be used in comparative design studies of lighter than air vehicles by rapidly providing airship size and mission performance data, was prepared and documented. The program can be used to define design requirements such as weight breakdown, required propulsive power, and physical dimensions of airships which are designed to meet specified mission requirements. The program is also useful in sensitivity studies involving both design trade-offs and performance trade-offs. The input to the program primarily consists of a series of single point values such as hull overall fineness ratio, number of engines, airship hull and empennage drag coefficients, description of the mission profile, and weights of fixed equipment, fixed useful load and payload. In order to minimize computation time, the program makes ample use of optional computation paths.

Terminal guidance and navigation for comet and asteroid rendezvous

A terminal guidance and navigation scheme developed in earlier work was modified and evaluated for a solar electric propulsion rendezvous mission to comet Encke. The scheme is intended for autonomous, on-board use. The guidance algorithm is based on optimal control theory and minimizes the time integrated square of thrust acceleration. The navigation algorithm employs a modified Kalman filter set in measurement variables. Random sequences were generated to simulate measurement errors, and the evaluation was conducted with detailed numerical computations which include actual motions of spacecraft and comet. The evaluations showed that the scheme attains rendezvous and maintains station after rendezvous within less than 10 km for estimated best measurements and within less than 100 km for estimated worst measurements. The measurements required are angles, range, and range rate. Angles and range appear to be absolutely necessary; range rate is not as strong a measurement type, and further modifications of the filter will allow a scheme that does not require the rate measurements.

Numerical analyses for treating diffusion in single-, two- and three-phase binary alloy systems

Numerical solutions were applicable for planar, cylindrical, or spherical geometries with any diffusion-zone size and any continuous variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration. Special techniques were included in the analyses to account for differences in molal volumes, initiation and growth of an intermediate phase, disappearance of a phase, and the presence of an initial composition profile in the specimen. A major improvement in solution accuracy was achieved in the two phase analysis by employing a mass conservation criterion to establish the location of the interface rather than the conventional interface-flux-balance criterion. In the three phase analysis, computation time was minimized without sacrificing solution accuracy by treating the three phase problem as a two phase problem when the thickness of the intermediate phase was less than a preset small value. Three computer codes were developed to perform these analyses.

Concatenated coding systems employing a unit-memory convolutional code and a byte-oriented decoding algorithm

Concatenated coding systems utilizing a convolutional code as the inner code and a Reed-Solomon code as the outer code are considered. In order to obtain very reliable communications over a very noisy channel with relatively modest coding complexity, it is proposed to concatenate a byte-oriented unit-memory convolutional code with an RS outer code whose symbol size is one byte. It is further proposed to utilize a real-time minimal-byte-error probability decoding algorithm, together with feedback from the outer decoder, in the decoder for the inner convolutional code. The performance of the proposed concatenated coding system is studied, and the improvement over conventional concatenated systems due to each additional feature is isolated.

Optimal analytic rendezvous using Clohessy-Wiltshire equations

The optimal solution time that minimizes the sum of the two applied impulses necessary to rendezvous is obtained analytically for the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations with a linear gravity model assumption. A plume impingement inequality constraint on the solution is examined, and an optimal policy is developed. Numerical tests are conducted to verify the analysis and to illustrate the optimal solution algorithm.

A Simplified Shuttle Payload Thermal Analyzer /SSPTA/ program

A simple thermal analysis program for Space Shuttle payloads has been developed to accommodate the user who requires an easily understood but dependable analytical tool. The thermal analysis program includes several thermal subprograms traditionally employed in spacecraft thermal studies, a data management system for data generated by the subprograms, and a master program to coordinate the data files and thermal subprograms. The language and logic used to run the thermal analysis program are designed for the small user. In addition, analytical and storage techniques which conserve computer time and minimize core requirements are incorporated into the program.

Shuttle Orbiter Uplink Text and Graphics System

This paper presents the definition of requirements for and current design of the Shuttle Orbiter Uplink Text and Graphics System (UT&GS). Beginning in early 1981, the UT&GS will support Shuttle flights by providing the capability of transmitting single-frame imagery from the ground to the orbiting Shuttle vehicle. Such imagery is in the form of maps, text, diagrams, or photographs, and is outputted on the Orbiter as a paper hard copy. Four modes of operation will be provided to minimize the time required to transmit less than full-resolution imagery. This paper discusses the considerations and complications leading to the four modes and associated resolution requirements. The paper also presents the design of the CCD array ground scanner and airborne CRT hardcopier.

Implementing a bubble memory hierarchy system

This paper reports on implementation of a magnetic bubble memory in a two-level hierarchial system. The hierarchy used a major-minor loop device and RAM under microprocessor control. Dynamic memory addressing, dual bus primary memory, and hardware data modification detection are incorporated in the system to minimize access time. It is the objective of the system to incorporate the advantages of bipolar memory with that of bubble domain memory to provide a smart, optimal memory system which is easy to interface and independent of user's system.

Computing region moments from boundary representations

The class of all possible formulas for computing arbitrary moments of a region from the region's boundary is derived. The selection of a particular formula depends on the choice of an independent parameter. Several choices of this parameter are explored for region boundaries approximated by polygons. The parameter choice that minimizes computation time for boundaries represented by chain code is derived. Algorithms are presented for computing arbitrary moments for a region from a polygonal approximation of its boundary and for computing low order moments from chain encoded boundaries.

Analysis of test system misalignment in the creep test

Sheet type rectangular 1100-0 aluminum specimens were tested. The creep strain at the geometric centerline of the specimen is different than that at the neutral axis, and decreases with time. The effect of misalignment, which decreases with creep time, is minimized when creep tests are conducted with long pullrods and large initial strain level (high creep stress).

An analytic approach to optimal rendezvous using Clohessy-Wiltshire equations

An analytic approach is used to obtain the optimal solution time that minimizes the sum of the two applied impulses necessary to rendezvous for the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations. A plume impingement inequality constraint on the solution is examined, and an optimal policy is developed. Numerical tests are conducted to verify the analysis and to illustrate the optimal solution algorithm.

The development of a self-streamlining flexible walled transonic test section

This design eliminates the uncertainties in data from conventional transonic test sections. Sidewalls are rigid, and the flexible floor and ceiling are positioned by motorized jacks controlled by on-line computer to minimize run times. The tunnel-computer combination is self-streamlining without reference to the model. Data is taken from the model only when the walls are good streamlines, and is corrected for the small, known but inevitable residual interferences. Two-dimensional validation testing in the Mach range up to about 0.85 where the walls are just supercritical shows good agreement with reference data using a height:chord ratio of 1.5. Techniques are under development to extend Mach number above 1. This work has demonstrated the feasibility of almost eliminating wall interferences, improving flow quality, and reducing power requirements or increasing Reynolds number. Extensions to three-dimensional testing are outlined.

Airborne method to minimize fuel with fixed time-of-arrival constraints

A method for generating a minimum-fuel, fixed-range, fixed-time-of-arrival flight path in an on-board flight management system computer for commercial aircraft is described. It is shown that up to 6% of the fuel otherwise used can be saved by means of this capability, despite time-of-arrival delays of up to 30 min, by a medium-range, tri-jet transport aircraft.

Investigation and evaluation of a computer program to minimize three-dimensional flight time tracks

The program for the DC 8-D3 flight planning was slightly modified for the three dimensional flight planning for DC 10 aircrafts. Several test runs of the modified program over the North Atlantic and North America were made for verifying the program. While geopotential height and temperature were used in a previous program as meteorological data, the modified program uses wind direction and speed and temperature received from the National Weather Service. A scanning program was written to collect required weather information from the raw data received in a packed decimal format. Two sets of weather data, the 12-hour forecast and 24-hour forecast based on 0000 GMT, are used for dynamic processes in testruns. In order to save computing time only the weather data of the North Atlantic and North America is previously stored in a PCF file and then scanned one by one.

Flight tests for the assessment of task performance and control activity

The tests were performed with the helicopters BO 105 and UH-1D. Closely connected with tactical demands the six test pilots' task was to minimize the time and the altitude over the obstacles. The data reduction yields statistical evaluation parameters describing the control activity of the pilots and the achieved task performance. The results are shown in form of evaluation diagrams. Additionally dolphin tests with varied control strategy were performed to get more insight into the influence of control techniques. From these test results recommendations can be derived to emphasize the direct force control and to reduce the collective to pitch crosscoupling for the dolphin.
