ASDTIC - A feedback control innovation.

The ASDTIC (analog signal to discrete time interval converter) control subsystem provides precise output control of high performance aerospace power supplies. The key to ASDTIC operation is that it stably controls output by sensing output energy change as well as output magnitude. The ASDTIC control subsystem and control module were developed to improve power supply performance during static and dynamic input voltage and output load variations, to reduce output voltage or current regulation due to component variations or aging, to maintain a stable feedback control with variations in the loop gain or loop time constants, and to standardize the feedback control subsystem for power conditioning equipment.

Nonlinear estimation theory applied to the interplanetary orbit determination problem.

Martingale theory and appropriate smoothing properties of Loeve (1953) have been used to develop a modified Gaussian second-order filter. The performance of the filter is evaluated through numerical simulation of a Jupiter flyby mission. The observations used in the simulation are on-board measurements of the angle between Jupiter and a fixed star taken at discrete time intervals. In the numerical study, the influence of each of the second-order terms is evaluated. Five filter algorithms are used in the simulations. Four of the filters are the modified Gaussian second-order filter and three approximations derived by neglecting one or more of the second-order terms in the equations. The fifth filter is the extended Kalman-Bucy filter which is obtained by neglecting all of the second-order terms.

Nonlinear estimation theory applied to the interplanetary orbit determination problem.

The performance of a second order filter which is identical to the algorithm developed by Athans et al. (1968) for the scalar case is evaluated through numerical simulation of a Jupiter flyby mission. The observations used in the simulation are on-board measurements of the angle between Jupiter and a fixed star taken at discrete time intervals. In the numerical study, the influence of each of the second order terms is evaluated.

On the adaptive control of linear systems using the open-loop-feedback-optimal approach.

This paper considers the suboptimal stochastic control of linear discrete-time dynamical systems with unknown or stochastically varying parameters. The suboptimal scheme is based upon the use of the open-loop-feedback-optimal (O.L.F.O.) method. The state and parameter estimates are generated by an extended Kalman filter algorithm. Numerical results for first order systems are presented.

Sufficiently informative functions and the minimax feedback control of uncertain dynamic systems.

The problem of optimal feedback control of uncertain discrete-time dynamic systems is considered where the uncertain quantities do not have a stochastic description but instead are known to belong to given sets. The problem is converted to a sequential minimax problem and dynamic programming is suggested as a general method for its solution. The notion of a sufficiently informative function, which parallels the notion of a sufficient statistic of stochastic optimal control, is introduced, and conditions under which the optimal controller decomposes into an estimator and an actuator are identified.

On the stability of numerical integration routines for ordinary differential equations.

Numerical integration methods for the solution of initial value problems for ordinary vector differential equations may be modelled as discrete time feedback systems. The stability criteria discovered in modern control theory are applied to these systems and criteria involving the routine, the step size and the differential equation are derived. Linear multistep, Runge-Kutta, and predictor-corrector methods are all investigated.

This paper considers the suboptimal stochastic control of linear discrete-time dynamical systems with uncertain or stochastically varying parameters. The suboptimal scheme is based upon the use of the open-loop-feedback-optimal (OLFO) method. The state and parameter estimates are generated by an extended Kalman filter algorithm. Numerical results for first-order systems are presented.

A structurally oriented simulation system

The computer program SOSS (Structurally Oriented Simulation System) is designed to be used as an experimental aid in the study of reliable systems. Basically, SOSS can simulate the structure and behavior of a discrete-time, finite-state, time-invariant system at various levels of structural definition. A general description of the program is given along with its modes of operation, command language of the basic system, future features to be incorporated in SOSS, and an example of usage.

On-line diagnosis of sequential systems

A model for on-line diagnosis was investigated for discrete-time systems, and resettable sequential systems. Generalized notions of a realization are discussed along with fault tolerance and errors. Further investigation into the theory of on-line diagnosis is recommended for three levels: binary state-assigned level, logical circuit level, and the subsystem-network level.

Optimal output feedback control of linear systems in presence of forcing and measurement noise

The problem of obtaining an optimal control law, which is constrained to be a linear feedback of the available measurements, for both continuous and discrete time linear systems subjected to additive white process noise and measurement noise was Necessary conditions are obtained for minimizing a quadratic performance function for both finite and infinite terminal time cases. The feedback gains are constrained to be time invariant for the infinite terminal time cases. For all the cases considered, algorithms are derived for generating sequences of feedback gain matrices which successively improve the performance function. A continuous time numerical example is included for the purpose of demonstration.

The discrete complementary variational principle and optimal control systems

A discrete complementary variational principle is developed and applied to linear and nonlinear discrete-time optimal control systems. Using the variational approach, a primal-dual relationship is established. This relationship provides a precise measure of system suboptimality independent of any a priori knowledge of the optimal solution.

Tree encoding of Gaussian sources

Tree codes are known to be capable of performing arbitrarily close to the rate-distortion function for any memoryless source and single-letter fidelity criterion. Tree coding and tree search strategies are investigated for the discrete-time memoryless Gaussian source encoded for a signal-power-to-mean-squared-error ratio of about 30 dB (about 5 binary digits per source output). Also, a theoretical lower bound on average search effort is derived. Two code search strategies (the Viterbi algorithm and the stack algorithm) were simulated in assembly language on a large digital computer. After suitable modifications, both strategies yielded encoding with a signal-to-distortion ratio about 1 dB below the limit set by the rate-distortion function. Although this performance is better than that of any previously known instrumentable scheme, it unfortunately requires search computation of the order of 100,000 machine cycles per source output encoded.

Approximations to and local properties of diffusions with discontinuous controls

The paper discusses several properties of control systems defined by stochastic differential equations, which are defined by the method of Girsanov, using a transformation of measures, and where the controls are discontinuous. Uniqueness of the multivariate distributions of the process is proved, and it is shown that the process is a limit, in a natural sense, of a certain discrete time approximation. Other questions, concerning the effects on the distributions of the paths, and of the cost of approximating the control by a smooth control and concerning local properties of the solution, are discussed.

On-line diagnosis of unrestricted faults

Attention is given to the formal development of the notion of a discrete-time system and the associated concepts of fault, result of a fault, and error. The considered concept of on-line diagnosis is formalized and a diagnosis using inverse machines is discussed. The case of an inverse which is lossless is investigated. It is found that in such a case the class of unrestricted faults can be diagnosed with a delay equal to the delay of losslessness of the inverse system.

Stochastic process approximation for recursive estimation with guaranteed bound on the error covariance

An approach, is proposed for the design of approximate, fixed order, discrete time realizations of stochastic processes from the output covariance over a finite time interval, was proposed. No restrictive assumptions are imposed on the process; it can be nonstationary and lead to a high dimension realization. Classes of fixed order models are defined, having the joint covariance matrix of the combined vector of the outputs in the interval of definition greater or equal than the process covariance; (the difference matrix is nonnegative definite). The design is achieved by minimizing, in one of those classes, a measure of the approximation between the model and the process evaluated by the trace of the difference of the respective covariance matrices. Models belonging to these classes have the notable property that, under the same measurement system and estimator structure, the output estimation error covariance matrix computed on the model is an upper bound of the corresponding covariance on the real process. An application of the approach is illustrated by the modeling of random meteorological wind profiles from the statistical analysis of historical data.
