Mechanical, Electrochemical & Thermal Models - Training (CRADA CRD-19-00798 Final Report)

Under the proposed effort in partnership with Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NLR) will host Dr. Jaeyoung Lim from HMC for a period of one year to jointly develop mathematical models for battery cells and modules subject to mechanical crush. NLR will assist with the development of mathematical models that Dr. Lim will incorporate into his research effort on new concepts of mobility with electric vehicles.

Dynamic spectral characteristics of thermal models for solar hard X-ray bursts

It is proposed that the source for solar hard X-ray bursts may consist of a distribution of many small impulsively-heated kernels, each cooled by anomalous conduction, with lifetimes shorter than current burst data temporal resolution. The dynamic spectra of bursts are governed by the dynamic evolution of the kernel production process, such as magnetic-field dissipation in the tearing mode. An integral equation is formulated, the solution of which yields information on this kernel production process from dynamic burst spectra, for any kernel model.

Thermal modeling of lithium systems

The heat generation during cell discharge and its distribution are discussed. The effects of casing materials, thickness of current collectors, discharge environments, and entropies are described. A number of calorimetric experiments are described which quantify the heat during cell discharge.

Application of thermal model for pan evaporation to the hydrology of a defined medium, the sponge

A technique is presented which estimates pan evaporation from the commonly observed values of daily maximum and minimum air temperatures. These two variables are transformed to saturation vapor pressure equivalents which are used in a simple linear regression model. The model provides reasonably accurate estimates of pan evaporation rates over a large geographic area. The derived evaporation algorithm is combined with precipitation to obtain a simple moisture variable. A hypothetical medium with a capacity of 8 inches of water is initialized at 4 inches. The medium behaves like a sponge: it absorbs all incident precipitation, with runoff or drainage occurring only after it is saturated. Water is lost from this simple system through evaporation just as from a Class A pan, but at a rate proportional to its degree of saturation. The contents of the sponge is a moisture index calculated from only the maximum and minium temperatures and precipitation.

Thermal Modeling of Bridgman Crystal Growth

Heat Flow modeled for moving or stationary rod shaped sample inside directional-solidification furnace. Program effectively models one-dimensional heat flow in translating or motionless rod-shaped sample inside of directionalsolidification furnace in which adiabatic zone separates hot zone and cold zone. Applicable to systems for which Biot numbers in hot and cold zones are less than unity.

Synthesis of proterozoic data as a prerequisite for tectonic and thermal modeling

Rocks of the Pongola supergroup form an elongate belt in the Archean Kaapvaal Caton of southern Africa. Because these rocks exhibit many features that are characteristic of rocks deposited in continental rifts, it is suggested that the Pongola supergroup was deposited in such a rift. The age of these rocks (approximately 3.0 Ga) makes the Pongola structure the world's oldest well-preserved rift so far recognized, and comparison of the Pongola Rift with other rifts formed more recently in Earth history reveals striking similarities. Rocks of the Ventersdorp Supergroup were deposited in a system of northeast trending grabens on the Kaapvaal Craton approximately 2.64 Ga ago. It is suggested that it was this collision which initiated the Ventersdorp rifting. The Ventersdorp rift province is related to an extension in the Kaapval Craton associated with the collision.

Recent thermal models of the chromosphere

The paper describes recent research on the calculation of solar chromospheric models. The models included here are based on the observed spectrum, and on the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. The calculations depend on realistic solutions of the radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium equations for optically thick lines and continua, and on including the effects of large numbers of lines throughout the spectrum. Although spectroheliograms show that the structure of the chromosphere is highly complex, one-dimensional models of particular features are reasonably successful in matching observed spectra. There has been considerable recent progress in applying such models to the interpretation of chromospheric observations.
