Here, we report measurements of time-resolved Ta, TaO and TaN emission spectroscopic signatures from a laser-produced plasma. Plasmas were generated using 1064 nm, 6 ns pulses from an Nd:YAG laser focused onto a pure Ta metal target in a gaseous environment with varying percentages of O 2 /N 2 for controlling gas-phase oxidation/plasma chemistry. Time-resolved analysis showed that Ta oxide emission is prominent at later times in plasma evolution, whereas strong atomic emission is present at early times in air. Emission spectral features as a function of O 2 partial pressure showed that TaO emission intensity increases, while the peak intensity of TaO appears earlier with increasing O 2 availability. We also report emission spectra of TaN, and show that plasma chemistry favors TaO formation instead of TaN when O 2 is present in the environment.

The sensitivity of the eigenvalue to uncertainties in nuclear data and its evaluation are important for nuclear criticality safety. TSUNAMI-3D sequences within the SCALE code system offer several options to the user community for calculating eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients with multigroup (MG) and continuous energy (CE) 3D transport capabilities. TSUNAMI-3D sequences implement the adjoint-based perturbation theory with MG KENO code, the Contributon Linked eigenvalue sensitivity/Uncertainty estimation via Track length importance CHaracterization (CLUTCH) method with CE KENO code, and the Iterated Fission Probability (IFP) method with CE KENO and Shift codes. Each method has benefits and limitations depending on the problem that is run. The work presented here aims to adapt the CLUTCH method, which enables the Contributon method's mesh-free, memory-efficient approach for calculating adjoint-weighted tallies for sensitivity calculations, to the MG TSUNAMI-3D sequence. This application would eliminate the explicit adjoint KENO calculation, as well as the memory-consuming mesh flux moment tallies required by the conventional MG TSUNAMI-3D. Smaller memory footprints in the CLUTCH methodology and relatively shorter runtimes in MG KENO transport can make MG TSUNAMI-3D a viable method for some complex problems. Moreover, this adaptation allows MG sensitivity calculations with Shift, ORNL's next-generation high-performance Monte Carlo transport code, which currently does not offer any sensitivity capabilities with MG particle transport simulations. Initial implementation of the new MG TSUNAMI-3D sequence and its preliminary results with a selected critical benchmark experiment in the Verified, Archived Library of Inputs and Data (VALID) are presented in this study.
Laser powder bed fusion (LBPF) is currently the most mature metal additive manufacturing (AM) technology. While it does not have the same flexibility as directed energy deposition techniques to produce compositional gradients, LPBF can still be used to generate bimetallic parts by depositing one metal on a build plate made of another. Here, in this study, we print combinations of Ti-6Al-4V with Ta and characterize defects that occur at the interface. We use thermodynamic modeling to explain the formation of keyhole porosity and solidification cracks when Ta is built on a Ti baseplate, and the lack of defects when the materials are reversed. By understanding the mechanisms that lead to defect formation, the methodology demonstrated here can be applied to other material systems to efficiently design bimetallic LPBF processes.

We describe superconducting diffusion-cooled hot-electron bolometers that were fabricated fromtantalum films grown on a thin niobium seed layer. The seed layer promotes single-phase growth of the Ta films, resulting in high-quality bolometers with transition temperatures up to 2.35 K and transition widths of less than 0.2 K. An S-parameter measurement set-up in a He-3 cryostat was used to measure device impedance versus frequency of a 400 nm long device at a temperature of 400 mK. It is shown that a 3 dB roll-off frequency of about 1 GHz can be achieved when the device resistance matches the impedance of the embedding network (no electrothermal feedback). This would lead to a prediction of 16 GHz for a 100 nm device, and indicates that a heterodyne mixer using a Ta HEB should be able to operate at several GHz even with a significant amount of electrothermal feedback.

This work gives a comparative analysis of degradation processes, failure modes and mechanisms in MnO2 and polymer technology capacitors. Analyzed conditions include effects of vacuum and radiation, soldering (pop-corning), long-term storage and operation at high temperatures, stability at low and high temperatures, and anomalous transients. Screening and qualification procedures to assure space-grade quality of CPTCs are suggested.
