The Open DAC 2023 Dataset and Challenges for Sorbent Discovery in Direct Air Capture

Direct air capture (DAC) of CO 2 with porous adsorbents such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has the potential to aid large-scale decarbonization. Previous screening of MOFs for DAC relied on empirical force fields and ignored adsorbed H 2 O and MOF deformation. We performed quantum chemistry calculations overcoming these restrictions for thousands of MOFs. The resulting data enable efficient descriptions using machine learning.

Spatially Mapping the CO 2 Alkaline Sorbent Diffuse Microenvironment Using Operando Raman Spectroscopy

When designing a chemical process, the local balance of transport and kinetics, collectively referred to as the diffuse microenvironment, plays a critical role in performance but is difficult to directly observe. This work demonstrates a method of two-dimensional spatial chemical mapping of the diffuse microenvironment in the context of alkali metal hydroxide direct air capture of carbon dioxide using a custom operando gas-absorption flow cell along with confocal Raman spectroscopy. Notably, we observe the concentration boundary layer near the gas–liquid interface and elucidate the interplay of carbonate and bicarbonate ions within it while inferring local hydroxide depletion through continuum modeling. These first of their kind observations provide a technique to compare the performance of direct air capture solvents based on diffuse microenvironment dynamics while also providing metrics important for air contactor design such as boundary layer thickness. Overall, this work showcases a new experimental platform to study interfacial diffuse microenvironments in and outside of the field of direct air capture of carbon dioxide.

Mechanistic Understanding of Silver Sorbent Aging Processes in Off-Gas Treatment

The effect of aging in various off-gas streams including dry air, humid air, 1% NO/N 2 , 2% NO 2 /air, and a gas mixture consisting of 99.25% humid air (dew point: -15 °C), 0.25% NO/N 2 , and 0.5% NO 2 /air in terms of concentration on reduced silver exchanged mordenite (Ag 0 Z) and silver functionalized silica aerogel (Ag 0 -aerogel) were studied in this project. Utilizing simple and sophisticated experimental information combined with molecular and macroscopic mechanistic modeling, this project has significantly advanced the current understanding of aging for silver bearing adsorbents in nuclear-fuel-reprocessing off-gas streams. In addition, this project has produced models that can be utilized to predict the influence of adsorbent aging on the uptake kinetics and capacity of aged adsorbents for iodine and iodine-containing organic compounds. The results of the study have been published in the open literature, and can be used to help DOE better predict the removal of radioactive gases from nuclear-fuel-reprocessing off-gas streams.

Perovskite Sorbent Oxygen Separation Modeling with MFiX

This document chronicles the development and implementation of computational kinetic rate models that capture absorption and desorption characteristics of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) developed perovskite, Sr 1-x Ca x FeO 3-δ . Two paths to create accurate kinetic rates were followed: (1) an isothermal rate approach where thermogravimetric (TGA) data are recast as oxygen capacities through a pseudo-second order Lagergren equation (He et al., 2009); and (2) a more traditional Arrhenius approach where experimental data are fit with a power law model to derive associate activation energies (Bulfin et al., 2020a). For reference, the mathematics and associate experimental strategies that support these derivations are included in this report. In addition, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed to utilize both kinetic rate formulations and applied to simulate oxygen uptake and release in small scale scenarios. The program Multiphase Flow with interphase eXchanges (MFiX) was used to create: (1) discrete element method (DEM) simulations of a single tube of granular perovskite experiencing isothermal O 2 -absorption; and desorption and (2) two-fluid-model (TFM) non-isothermal simulations of perovskite O 2 -absorption and desorption tubes that share a wall. Conjugate heat transfer between steel walled tubes and the perovskite bed were managed with user-defined functions. As the project moves to simulating larger scale devices that will require more robust conjugate heat transfer methods, developed kinetic rates and associate methodologies have been recast for use in the ANSYS Fluent CFD program.

Engineering Study of Svante’s Solid Sorbent Post-Combustion CO 2 Capture Technology at a Linde Steam Methane Reforming H 2 Plant

An initial engineering design study was performed for an advanced post combustion CO 2 capture (PCC) technology to be installed at a commercial-scale steam methane reforming (SMR) hydrogen plant located in the US Gulf Coast. The PCC process integrated the VeloxoTherm™ structured adsorbent technology from Svante for the CO 2 separation and CO 2 compression and purification and balance of plant systems provided by Linde. This pre-FEED equivalent study included following: (1) design basis, (2) basic engineering, including development of process flow diagrams and heat & material balances, (3) inside the battery limit (ISBL) equipment and systems specification, (4) balance of plant outside the battery limit (OSBL) equipment and systems specifications, (5) technology maturation plan, (6) hazard identification (HAZID) review, (7) environmental, health and safety (EH&S) assessment and environmental permitting analysis, (8) constructability review, (9) ISBL and OSBL EPC cost estimation, and (10) commercial-scale techno-economic analysis including capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX) and CO 2 capture cost estimates.
