New atomic data for Si/6+/, S/8+/ and Ar/10+/

The paper gives new atomic data, populations of excited levels, and line intensity ratios for the ions Si VII, S IX, and Ar XI of the O I isoelectronic sequence. Ten levels are included in the calculations, i.e., the levels of the 2s/2/2p/4/ and 2s2p/5/ and 2p/6/ configurations. It is noted that the calculations are done for applications to solar plasmas. The line ratios (2s/2/2p/4/3P1 - 2s2p/5/3P0) / (2s/2/2p/4/3P1 - 2s2p/5/3P1) and (2s/2/2p/4/1D2 - 2s2p/5/1P/1/) / (2s/2/2p/4/3P/1/ - 2s1p/5/3P/1/) are two of the ratios useful for electron density determination. Finally, density sensitive line ratios of Ca XIII and Fe XIX are also discussed.

Submilliarcsecond VLBI Using Compact Close Pairs of Radio Sources: Error Analysis

The potential accuracy attainable for (delta) VLBI positional measurements (submilliarc second level) is reached by simultaneously observing pairs of compact radio sources whose angular separation are smaller than the beamwidth of each antenna. Simultaneous (delta) VLBI (SVLBI) enables significant cancellation of measurement errors. Solar plasma is the dominant fluctuating error source in SVLBI positional measurements since there is enhanced cancellation of the troposphere and ionosphere, and complete cancellation of oscillator instabilities. Of the nonfluctuating error sources, errors due to universal time predominate. By performing SVLBI experiments over several years with many different close pairs of radio sources, limits can be placed on reference frame stability. Intrinsic properties of the sources, such as source structure and proper motion, will limit measurements. The SVLBI differential phase and corruptive noise sources will be discussed here along with estimated results.

Differential Very Long Baseline Interferometry for 50 nanoradian deep space navigation - Results from quasar pair experiments

Deep space tracking experiments completed at JPL have demonstrated a 50-nanoradian angular positioning accuracy with wideband differential Very Long Baseline Interferometry (delta VLBI). This meets the stringent navigation requirements of NASA's Galileo mission, scheduled for launch in May 1986 and for encounter with Jupiter in December 1988. Pairs of extragalactic radio sources (quasars) with well-known coordinates were used to simulate deep space navigation passes in which quasar-spacecraft pairs are observed. This paper discusses the accuracy of the delta VLBI technique and how it is affected by source separations, source elevations, source strengths, solar plasma and ionosphere. Several observation strategies are discussed and one is shown to be especially effective in minimizing these major error sources.

Evidence for beamed electrons in a limb X-ray flare observed by Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS)

The limb flare of November 18, 1980, 14:51 UT, was investigated on the basis of X-ray images taken by the Hard X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) and of X-ray spectra from the Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) aboard the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM). The impulsive burst was also recorded at microwave frequencies between 2 and 20 GHz whereas no optical flare and no radio event at frequencies below 1 GHz were reported. The flare occurred directly at the SW limb of the solar disk. Taking advantage of the spatial resolution of HXIS images, the time evolution of the X-radiation originating from relatively small source regions can be studied. Using Monte Carlo computations of the energy distribution of energetic electrons traversing the solar plasma, the bremsstrahlung spectra produced by the electrons were derived.

Studies of the interplanetary magnetic field: IMP's to Voyager

During the last two decades, spacecraft projects and individual experiments for which Frank McDonald was a leader have contributed very significantly to the current understanding of the structure of interplanetary space and the correlation between solar and interplanetary disturbances. Studies on the IMP, HELIOS, and Pioneer spin-stabilized spacecraft and the larger attitude-stabilized Voyager spacecraft have provided data sets from which the modern view of the heliosphere has evolved. That concept in which the inner solar system is shown to be dominated by individual streams associated with specific source regions on the Sun is illustrated. As these high-speed streams overtake the preexisting solar plasma, they coalesce and modify the characteristics so that at larger heliocentric distances, these disturbances appear as radially propagating concentric shells of compressed magnetic fields and enhanced fluctuations

Asymmetries in the location of the Venus ionopause

Four large data sets of Venus ionopause observations, based on different definitions and observations by Pioneer Venus Orbiter field and particle instruments, are compared. Regardless of the definition chosen, the ionopause is observed to be higher on average at dawn than at dusk. The results of an empirical ionosphere model and a data analysis technique which minimizes orbital bias are combined to show that most or all of this asymmetry results from the effects of orbital bias and uneven sampling of solar wind conditions. However, an additional asymmetry is found in which the ionopause is displaced in the direction opposite to the motional electric field of the solar wind. This effect is attributed to asymmetric pickup of exospheric ions by the electric and magnetic fields in the magnetosheath. This ion pickup interpretation can be understood in terms of a previous observed magnetosheath magnetic field asymmetry. Quantitative analysis indicates that the transverse momentum imparted by the solar plasma to pickup particles in their initial gyration is transmitted by the magnetosheath magnetic field to the ionosphere boundary.

Soft X-ray/extreme ultraviolet images of the solar atmosphere with normal incidence multilayer optics

High-resolution images of the sun in the soft-X-ray/XUV range have been obtained with normal-incidence multilayer coated optics (MCOs) during a sounding-rocket flight on October 23, 1987 from White Sands. MCOs were used in two Cassegrain telescopes, as off-axis primary mirrors, and as tertiary mirrors operating with a Wolter-Schwarzschild (WS) grazing-incidence mirror. The inherent energy-selective property of MCOs allowed distinct groups of emission lines to be isolated in the solar corona and the transition region. Images were recorded at 173 and 256 A with the Cassegrain telescopes, at 256 A with a Herschelian telescope, and at 44, 173, and 256 A with the WS hybrid telescope. In addition, soft-X-ray images in the 8-18-A bandpass were obtained at the prime focus of the WS optics. The images show many features of the solar corona and transition region, including magnetically confined loops of hot solar plasma, coronal plumes, polar coronal holes, supergranulation, and features associated with overlying cool prominences.

Relative tracking of multiple spacecraft by interferometry

An analysis is conducted of earth-based radiometric tracking of one spacecraft relative to an angularly nearby second spacecraft. Two cases are studied: relative positioning between a lander and a rover on the surface of Mars and relative tracking between a Mars lander and a Mars orbiter. All spacecraft signals are simultaneously received in the same beamwidth of an earth tracking antenna. Differential interferometric measurement errors are predicted. Errors which scale with angular separation between sources and errors which scale with temporal separation between measurement epochs are reduced virtually to zero. System thermal noise and systematic phase shifts introduced by receiver electronics typically dominate the error budget. Solar plasma delays become dominant for signal paths which pass close to the sun. Precise line-of-sight range measurements, differenced between stations, are also considered. Meter-level accuracy is obtained for lander/rover relative position by combining interferometric and precise range measurements. Either data type alone, for geometries where earth is not near zero declination as seen from Mars and Mars is not near zero declination as seen from earth, can provide accuracy at the 10-100-m level.

A statistical study of the differential very long baseline interferometry delay rate error budget

The delta differential one-way Doppler (delta-DOD) error budget is assessed by analyzing 12 years of dual-frequency Deep Space Network very long baseline interferometry data. A typical delta-DOD observation is outlined, and the Magellan error budget along with tropospheric effects are considered. Formation of quasar-quasar observables, RMS delta-DOD residual, angular source separation and time separation between observations are discussed, along with elevation angle and atmospheric pathlength dependence, solar-plasma and ionospheric effects. It is concluded that the weak dependence of the delta-DOD error on angular source separation can mean that quasars with larger angular separation from a spacecraft may be used as navigation reference with little increase in the delta-DOD error. It is also indicated that the delta-DOD errors are dominated by wet troposphere fluctuations, and the results of numerical integrations for the single-station RMS delay rate at different elevation angles are presented.

Magellan space flight operations

This paper describes the Magellan spacecraft designed to collect information from the surface of Venus while orbiting this planet. Special attention is given to the attitude and articulation control of the spacecraft; the command, data, and data storage; the thermal control; and instrumentation. The operations at Venus, which will include Venus orbit insertion and in-orbit checkout and to both routine and nonroutine (at a period when Venus will be in superior conjunction, and the solar plasma will drive Magellan's telecommunications signal-to-noise ratio to a very high value) mapping of the surface, are discussed. Also discussed are operations on earth, carried out by the new Space Flight Operations Control Center.

Differential spacecraft tracking by interferometry

This study estimates measurement system errors for two space vehicles on the surface of Mars, and for two Mars orbiting spacecraft, which are being tracked by differential interferometry. In these examples, signals from all spacecraft lie within the same beamwidth of an earth-based radio antenna. The measurements of all spacecraft signals are made simultaneously; errors that scale with angular source separation or with temporal separation between measurement epochs are practically removed. It is shown that errors due to system thermal noise and to systematic effects within ground receiver electronics dominate, except for geometries when signals pass close to the sun, when solar plasma becomes the dominant error source. The instantaneous relative position of two orbiters may be measured to within ten meters, leading to 50-meter three-dimensional orbital accuracy.

Voyager 2 test of the radar time-delay effect

By analyzing radio range measurements generated during the solar conjunction of the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1985, the relativistic time-delay effect has been tested accurately with a spacecraft at a distance of 3 x 10 to the 9th km from the earth. Because the range measurements were generated simultaneously at two frequencies on the downlink, it was possible to derive calibrations for the delay resulting from intervening solar plasma. In addition, a record of attitude thruster firings was used to model small accelerations of the spacecraft that could have produced a range error. It was thereby possible to determine the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter gamma to an accuracy of 3 percent with only a sparse amount of range data.

An electrograph for measurement of macroscopic electric fields in prominences and flares

An 'electrograph' instrument designed for measurement of macroscopic electric fields in solar plasmas is described, using the polarization dependence of line width in Stark-broadened hydrogen Paschen emission lines. Observations of quiescent prominences and limb chromosphere with the electrograph at the NSO/Sac Peak Evans Coronal Facility provide upper limits of 5-10 V/cm for transverse macroscopic electric fields in these structures, averaged over an area of about 5 x 7 arcsec. Random thermal motions of hydrogen ions across magnetic field lines generate a quasi-static electric field, which should be distinguishable from pressure broadening in the intensely magnetized chromosphere over a sunspot, given an electrograph sensitivity a factor 2-3 better than that achieved here. Future electrograph measurements of limb flares, post-flare loops, and eruptive prominences, even at 5-V/cm sensitivity, could provide a useful new test of reconnection and discharge effects in such dynamic structures.

The Active Sun Telescope Array

The concept of the Active Sun Telescope Array (ASTA) designed as a part of the NASA Orbiting Solar Laboratory is described together with the details of the ASTA instrument package. The ASTA, which will investigate the phenomenology of the solar chromosphere and the corona, consists of six EUV/XUV solar telescopes designed to provide wide field solar images in narrow wavelength bands, high-resolution spectroheliograms, and line profiles of the solar plasma in the temperature range from 10,000 K to 30,000 K. The detectors used in the ASTA are of the multianode multichannel array photon-counting array detector type.

Vacuum ultraviolet detection of the VLISM-heliosphere interaction

As the neutral components of the interstellar gas flow through the heliosphere their spatial distribution is modified by charge exchange with the solar plasma, photoionization, and radiation pressure. The deep space probes Pioneers 10/11 and Voyagers 1/2 have provided an opportunity to investigate this distribution through VUV observations of the heliospheric glow. Since the interactions of the inflowing neutrals with the heliosphere depend on both space and time it is particularly useful to have multiple spacecraft observations. Pioneer 10 is in the downstream region of the inflowing interstellar breeze at 50 AU while Pioneer 11 and Voyager 2 are upstream at about 30 AU. Voyager 1 is also upstream at about 40 AU but at a heliographic latitude of + 30 deg. Both temporal and spatial effects are expected to be quite different for the upstream and downstream regions. Some of the recent VUV data and its implications with respect to the heliospheric structure will be presented.

Twenty years of interplanetary magnetic field variations with periods in the range of 10 days to 3 years

Twenty years of interplanetary magnetic field data collected primarily by the IMP-8 spacecraft near Earth has been analyzed by a dynamic periodogram method in search of significant periodicities in the range of 10 days to 3 years. The method has the advantage of detecting variations with time in the periodicities besides determining the power and phase of the dominant variations. It has been found that the well known periodicities near 1 year and 27 days are strongly modulated by the solar cycle. Both of these periodicities are only detected during solar minimum. During solar maximum. a number of unusual variations are observed. Special emphasis will be placed on the recently reported 1.3 year variation in solar wind parameters besides periods in the interplanetary magnetic field near 51, 73 and 154 days. Correlations with solar wind plasma and solar index variations will also be presented.

Perspectives of the 1st IACG Campaign: Preliminary Results

The activities and aims of the Inter-Agency Consultative Group (IACG) for space science are reported on. The principle aim is to enhance the scientific return among the members through the coordination of their fleets of current and future spacecraft. The four current campaigns are: magnetotail energy flow and nonlinear dynamics; boundaries in the collisionless plasma; solar events and their manifestations in interplanetary space and geoscience, and solar sources of heliospheric structure observed out of the ecliptic. The first of these campaigns and its implementation are reviewed.
