Irradiation of Sintered Mo Disks with Presence of Organic Impurities in He Gas Flow
Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) is assisting NorthStar Medical Technologies in the development of a domestic supply of 99 Mo. Specifically, the present study focuses on the production of 99 Mo-feed solution used by the RadioGenix™ 99m Tc generator. During the target-irradiation phase of production, impurities can potentially be introduced into the feed, and can lead to disturbance of ligand- 99m Tc complexation chemistry and contamination of the final radiopharmaceutical that directly interacts with the patient. To address this issue, Argonne performed irradiations and chemical processing to identify whether the potential contamination of He flow with hydrocarbon oil during irradiation affects the radiochemical purity of the final K 2 MoO 4 (K 2 TcO 4 ) in 5M KOH solution. To mimic the conditions of real irradiation at NorthStar, Argonne used its electron linear accelerator and Van de Graaff facilities, heated the target and oil source to >800°C, and controlled oxygen in the presence of He during irradiation. Following irradiation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and carbon analysis (CA) were used to detect carbon contamination on the solid targets. The radiochemical purity of the dissolved targets was studied via thin-layer paper chromatography (TLC). As a result of these experiments, small regions of the surface of some irradiated disks were found to be high in carbon, but the total carbon content was still negligible in comparison to the reference sample, which had experienced no irradiation or contact with oil. The summarized results from the SEM, CA, and TLC tests lead to the conclusion that even an excess of oil and heating during irradiation do not affect the radiochemical purity of the final product.

Large Area Projection Sintering Technology Development (CRADA Final Report)
This CRADA was formed through support of the Innovation Crossroads program, which has been an invaluable experience for Ascend Manufacturing and our additive manufacturing technology. Without Innovation Crossroads, the research, capital and operational requirements to develop our company would have been too high and Ascend Manufacturing simply would not exist. Our patented and federally funded technology would have gone to waste. Through this CRADA, Ascend has been able to collaborate with the worlds experts in additive manufacturing to assist in developing our state of the art technology. This project assisted in developing a fully scalable 3D printing process, developed an industrial and pilot system design, assisted in the fabrication of a pilot system, allowing us to print components with materials impossible by any other 3D printing process. This work has allowed us to achieve significant follow-on funding to fully commercialize this highly capable manufacturing technology.
Nanoparticle Catalyst Formation and Subsequent Sintering: Size-Distribution Fundamental Understanding and Catalyst Control via Mechanism-Enabled Population Balance Modeling (Final Report)
The challenge of elucidating the chemical mechanisms by which nano- and other particles form, and then using those mechanisms to understand, analyze, and ideally predict particle-size and particle-size distributions, was undertaken. Thanks to multi-year, longer-term DOE support each of these challenges was successfully met. The community is now able to both predict, and control in cases where the underlying mechanism of particle formation has been determined, the key PS and PSD that are, in turn, critical properties that strongly influence the catalytic and other physical properties of nano- and larger particles across nature.
Phase Field Sintering Simulations of Tagged UO 2
Isotopic taggants are being considered as an additive for UO 2 manufacturing to improve nuclear security. Before taggants can be adopted, it must be determined whether taggants have any effect on the fuel microstructure or performance. As part of this effort, a grand potential formulation of the phase field method was used to model untagged, Cr-tagged, and Fe-tagged UO 2 . The simulations were compared to determine whether the taggants had any effect on fuel density or grain size. The results suggest that the taggants will not affect the density or grain size, but these findings may not be reliable because of high uncertainty. Causes of the uncertainty were discussed, and future work is proposed to reduce the model uncertainty.
Microdroplet Electrospray Localized Laser Printing and Sintering of Nanoparticles for Passivating, Carrier-Selective Contacts (Final Technical Report)
In this project, the team used a nanoparticle electrospray laser deposition (NELD) process developed at the University of Central Florida (UCF) to address current limitations of passivating, carrier-selective contact technologies for crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) cells. The NELD process was used to print low bulk line resistivity Ag contacts directly onto transparent conductive oxides (TCOs), like indium tin oxide (ITO), for hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based c-Si heterojunction (SHJ) cells without any subsequent contact firing step needed.
