Ion Transport in Self-Assembled Peptoid Membranes with Carbon Nanotube Porin Channels

Artificial membranes that combine high ionic selectivity with mechanical robustness remain a key challenge for next-generation separation technologies. Here, we report ion transport measurements in biomimetic membranes composed of crystalline peptoid nanosheets co-assembled with carbon nanotube porins (CNTPs). Pure peptoid sheets formed defect-free, ion-impermeable membranes, which were then suspended over small SiN x nanopore apertures for ion transport measurements. Incorporation of CNTPs into the peptoid sheet matrix made these membranes ion permeable, with ion conductance values consistent with ion transport through individual and multiple carbon nanotube channels. In conclusion, the modularity and molecular order of peptoid membranes, combined with the exceptional conductance properties of CNTPs, position this platform as a versatile framework for assembling programmable, selective, and robust nanofluidic membranes that can bridge the performance gap between biological and synthetic membrane materials.

Reconfigurable self-assembly of porous anisotropic colloids in nematic liquid crystals

Dispersions of anisotropic nanoparticles in liquid crystalline hosts recently yielded new soft condensed matter states, like the thermally reconfigurable monoclinic and orthorhombic biaxial nematic liquid crystals, with a plethora of unusual phases and phase transformations. Our current study shows that the nanoscale porous nature of colloids with micrometer-range overall dimensions also enables highly reconfigurable orientations and assemblies of the microparticles, allowing for realization of condensed matter states with unusual combinations of low-symmetry nematic or smectic order and fluidity. Much like the anisotropic nanoparticles studied previously, these nanoporous anisotropic colloids exhibit thermally reconfigurable oriented alignment with respect to the far-field director, as well as diverse low-symmetry liquid crystalline phase behaviors. Furthermore, our findings open doors to fundamental and applied uses of low-symmetry molecular-colloidal orientationally ordered states of matter with uninhibited fluidity, as well as liquid crystals with partial positional ordering, like low-symmetry smectics, which could lead to applications in metamaterial designs, electro-optics, photonics, etc.

Conductive Thin Films over Large Areas by Supramolecular Self-Assembly

We report a “one-step” method for preparing conductive thin films with cylindrical microdomains oriented normal to the surface over large areas using the supramolecular assembly of poly(styrene-block-4-vinylpyridine) (PS19-b-P4VP 5 ) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine (HOTPP). HOTPP interacts with the P4VP block by hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group of HOTPP and pyridine ring of PS 19 -b-P4VP 5 , forming cylindrical P4VP(HOTPP) domains having an average diameter of ~17 nm in a PS matrix. Here, dynamic light scattering, contact angle, and in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering measurements show a morphological transition from spherical micelles in solution to cylindrical microdomains oriented normal to the substrate surface during the drying process. From the dependence of current on voltage, an average current of ~4.0 nA is found to pass through a single microdomain, pointing to a promising route for organic semiconductor device applications.

Hole Transfer to Carbazole Derivatives: Untold Story of “Self-Assembled Monolayers” Employed in “Halide Perovskite Solar Cells”

Carbazole derivatives, such as MeO-2PACz and 2PACz are known to improve the performance of halide perovskite solar cells by facilitating hole transfer. To assess their interaction with halide perovskites, this work probes the hole transfer from excited CsPbBr3 quantum dots to MeO-2PACz and 2PACz using emission spectroscopic and transient absorption techniques. The different oxidation potentials of these two carbazoles result in divergent interactions with CsPbBr 3 QDs. Whereas MeO-2PACz quenches the emission of CsPbBr 3 QDs, 2PACz enhances the emission by remediating the surface traps. Transient absorption studies confirm the formation of MeO-2PACz +• cation radical with characteristic absorption in the near IR region. No such oxidation process was observed with 2PACz. The mechanistic insights into the interaction of the two carbazole derivatives with excited perovskite nanocrystals will add another piece to the untold story behind the improved performance of perovskite photovoltaic devices.

Freestanding self-assembled sulfonated pentablock terpolymer membranes for high flux pervaporation desalination

Pervaporation desalination has several advantages over competing desalination technologies, most notably an ability to select for or against volatile organic compounds and the ability to process high salinity feeds at a low transmembrane pressure. Pervaporation has not been commercialized for desalination applications because of its energy intensity. However, emerging processes such as hydraulic fracturing produce high total dissolved solids (>30-45 g/L) byproduct streams that exceed the operational limits of traditional reverse osmosis and could be treated by pervaporation. Here, we demonstrate free-standing pervaporation membranes with excellent permeance and high salt removal based on a partially sulfonated pentablock terpolymer with the tradename Nexar™. Pervaporation membranes were easily cast from this material with desalination performances comparable or superior to commercially available membranes. We found that the polymer degree of sulfonation and casting solvent polarity had a significant impact on the membranes’ water uptake but only a modest impact on the pervaporation desalination performance. Membranes with a degree of sulfonation of 52% (2.0 meq g –1 IEC) and a casting solution composed of 50 wt% n-propanol and 50 wt% toluene achieved a water flux of 3.32 kg m -2 h -1 (permeance 135 kg m -2 h -1 bar -1 ) with 99.5% salt removal in pervaporation from a 32 g/L –1 sodium chloride feed solution at room temperature. We demonstrated that dense, non-porous NexarTM pervaporation membrane permeance and salt separation performance were superior to commercial pervaporation membranes and equivalent to commercial membrane distillation membranes, which have much larger pores. Here, this study demonstrates that commercially available sulfonated pentablock terpolymers are excellent membranes for pervaporation desalination because of their ease of casting and excellent performance.

Biomimetic Light Harvesting Complexes Based on Self-Assembled Dye-DNA Nanostructures (Final Technical Report)

A fundamental limitation in the development of artificial molecular light harvesting structures is that generally if one places pigment molecules close enough to achieve very high energy transfer efficiency and absorbance cross section, the dyes interact in such a way that self-quenching occurs. This limits both the optical cross section and the overall efficiency of light capture in such systems. Nature overcomes this problem and achieves efficient energy transfer without self-quenching by controlling the environment, vibration characteristics, orientation and dynamics of the pigments involved in light harvesting. Natural light harvesting systems have evolved highly intricate chromophore architectures of protein-bound organic molecules that absorb and funnel solar energy with high efficiency and fast transfer rates using elegant excitonic circuitries. Nature achieves this precise control over the properties of pigment complexes by using specific proteins as templates to guide the formation of very well-defined pigment aggregates, groups of pigment molecules that are in close enough contact to undergo excitonic interactions resulting in new electronic properties that were not present in the monomer. In synthetic systems, pigment aggregates are well known, and J-aggregates and H-aggregates have been long studied for their unique properties. In Nature, the chlorosomes of green bacteria form what appear to be classical J-aggregates and the light harvesting complexes of purple nonsulfur bacteria form ring structures that have many of the properties of J-aggregates such as a red-shifted absorbance spectrum and excited states that are delocalized over multiple pigment molecules. These photosynthetic systems leverage the spectral and enhanced transport properties of J-like aggregates to achieve fast exciton transport within the antenna and thus high light-harvesting efficiency. The close interaction of the pigments results in substantial electronic coupling that lifts the degeneracy of excitonic states and therefore modifies the absorption and emission spectra of the monomer. In the case of J-aggregation, lower energy excitonic states acquire significant oscillator strength, resulting in a characteristic bathochromic shift of the absorption and fluorescence and often superradiant delocalized exciton states.

The structure of fly Teneurin-m reveals an asymmetric self-assembly that allows expansion into zippers

Teneurins are conserved cell adhesion molecules essential for embryogenesis and neural development in animals. Key to teneurin function is the ability of its extracellular region to form homophilic interactions in cis and/or in trans. However, our molecular understanding of teneurin homophilic interaction remains largely incomplete. Here, we showed that an extracellular fragment of Teneurin-m, the major teneurin homolog in flies, behaves as a homodimer in solution. The structure of Teneurin-m revealed that the transthyretin-related domain from one protomer and the β-propeller domain from the other mediates Teneurin-m self-association, which is abolished by point mutation of conserved residues. Strikingly, this architecture generates an asymmetric oligomerization interface that enables expansion of Teneurin-m into long zipper arrays reminiscent of protocadherins. An alternatively spliced site that exists only in vertebrates and regulates homophilic interaction in mammalian teneurins overlaps with the fly Teneurin-m self-association interface. Our work provides a molecular understanding of teneurin homophilic interaction and sheds light on its role in teneurin function throughout evolution.

Self‐Assembly and Oriented Growth of Conductive Ni‐CAT‐1 Metal‐Organic Framework at Solid–Liquid Interfaces

Abstract Two‐dimensional (2D) conductive metal‐organic frameworks (MOF) represent a unique class of electrode materials with high capacity and power density. Understanding molecular mechanisms and pathways for heterogeneous nucleation of 2D π‐conjugated MOFs is highly desirable for controlling the structure and properties of conductive MOFs on solid substrates. Herein, a systematic study of nucleation and growth of 2D π‐conjugated Ni‐catecholate (Ni‐CAT‐1) MOFs on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and copper substrates is reported. It is discovered that the nucleation density and growth kinetics of the MOF film can be controlled by varying substrate interactions with the organic linker. Specifically, π–π interactions between the linker and the HOPG dictate lower nucleation density, whereas π–metal interactions between the linker and the copper substrate dictate faster nucleation and higher nucleation densities. These studies reveal the key mechanism for Ni‐CAT‐1 nucleation on different surfaces and provide insights into interfacial control over the growth of other 2D π‐conjugated MOF films on solid substrates to inform synthesis of functional materials.

Surface Energy Modulated Self‐Assembly of Percolative Gallium Nanodroplet Films for Stretchable Electronics

Advancements in soft robotics and wearable technologies have led to an increased need for flexible and stretchable electronic systems. Liquid metals like Gallium (Ga) and its alloys offer high potential in the field of stretchable electronics and photonics due to their inherent high conductivity and malleability. However, their high surface tension and native oxide formation hinder uniform wetting and continuous film formation to get conducting films. Here, we report a fabrication strategy to realize electrically conductive Ga thin films with effective thicknesses around 100 nm on polymeric and elastomeric substrates. By enhancing the surface energy of the elastomer, we create uniform Ga nanodroplets capable of sustaining stretchability up to 200% strain. Our devices exhibit electronic conduction primarily through tunneling and display strain tunable piezoresistive characteristics, which are explained using Kirchhoff's resistive network and Simmon's analytical tunneling current model. To showcase the device's capability in fields of stretchable electronics, we demonstrate several functional prototypes, including flexible devices integrated with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), curvature and pressure sensors, and soft robotic grippers capable of sensing object curvature. The demonstrated devices highlight the potential of this approach for scalable integration of stretchable electronics in soft robotic and wearable platforms.

Supramolecular Self-Assembled Multi-Electron-Acceptor Organic Molecule as High-Performance Cathode Material for Li-Ion Batteries

Organic electrode materials possess many advantages such as low toxicity, sustainability, and chemical/structural tunability toward high energy density. However, to compete with inorganic-based compounds, crucial aspects such as redox potential, capacity, cycling stability, and electronic conductivity need to be improved. Herein, a comprehensive strategy on the molecular design of small organic electron-acceptor-molecule—hexaazatrianthranylene (HATA) embedded quinone (HATAQ) is reported. By introducing conjugated quinone moieties into the electron-deficient hexaazatriphenylene-derivative core, HATAQ with highly extended π-conjugation can yield extra-high capacity for lithium storage, delivering a capacity of 426 mAh g -1 at 200 mA g -1 (0.4C). At an extremely high rate of 10 A g -1 (19C), a reversible capacity of 209 mAh g -1 corresponding to nearly 85% retention is obtained after 1000 cycles. A unique network of unconventional lock-and-key hydrogen bonds in the solid-state facilitates favorable supramolecular 2D layered arrangement, enhancing cycling stability. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the capacity and rate capability of HATAQ are found to be the best ever reported for organic small-molecule-based cathodes. Finally, these results together with density functional theory studies provide proof-of-concept that the design strategy is promising for the development of organic electrodes with exceptionally high energy density, rate capability, and cycling stability.

Self‐Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well‐defined one‐handed double‐helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template‐free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time‐dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod‐like aggregates into the double‐helical microstructures. We have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor ( g lum ) up to ≈0.01.
