Sound propagation elements in evaluation of en route noise of advanced turbofan aircraft

Cruise noise from an advanced turboprop aircraft is reviewed on the basis of available wind tunnel data to estimate the aircraft noise signature at the source. Available analytical models are used to evaluate the sound levels at the ground. The analysis allows reasonable estimates to be made of the community noise levels that might be generated during cruise by such aircraft, provides the basis for preliminary comparisons with available data on noise of existing aircraft during climb and helps to identify the dominant elements of the sound propagation models applicable to this situation.

Linear acene derivatives - New routes to pentacene and naphthacene and the first synthesis of a triptycene with two anthracene moieties

The cycloaddition of o-xylylene to arene 1,4-endoxides was used to construct linear arene derivatives. An analogous sequence but with naphthalene 1,4-endoxides gave naphthacenes. Dehydration of the di adducts from 4 and anthracene 1,4:5,8-diendoxides gave a mixture of 5,9,14,18- and 5,8,15,18-tetrahydroheptacenes 3 and 9. The previously unknown triptycene 2 was synthesized from 5,14-dihydropentacene, an intermediate in the new pentacene synthesis, in three steps and 29 percent overall yield.

Bisannelation with a benzo(1,2-c:4,5-c-prime) difuran equivalent - A new route to linear acene derivatives

It was observed that the base peak in the mass spectra of all the Diels-Alder bis adducts of anthracene diendoxide as well as of its tetrahydro derivative appear at m/e 158, corresponding to the radical cation of benzo(1,2-c:4,5-c-prime) difuran (BDF). This paper describes a synthetic equivalent of BDF and demonstrates its utility for obtaining linear acene derivatives.

The route to chaos for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

The results of extensive numerical experiments of the spatially periodic initial value problem for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. This paper is concerned with the asymptotic nonlinear dynamics at the dissipation parameter decreases and spatio-temporal chaos sets in. To this end the initial condition is taken to be the same for all numerical experiments (a single sine wave is used) and the large time evolution of the system is followed numerically. Numerous computations were performed to establish the existence of windows, in parameter space, in which the solution has the following characteristics as the viscosity is decreased: a steady fully modal attractor to a steady bimodal attractor to another steady fully modal attractor to a steady trimodal attractor to a periodic attractor, to another steady fully modal attractor, to another periodic attractor, to a steady tetramodal attractor, to another periodic attractor having a full sequence of period-doublings (in parameter space) to chaos. Numerous solutions are presented which provide conclusive evidence of the period-doubling cascades which precede chaos for this infinite-dimensional dynamical system. These results permit a computation of the length of subwindows which in turn provide an estimate for their successive ratios as the cascade develops. A calculation based on the numerical results is also presented to show that the period doubling sequences found here for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, are in complete agreement with Feigenbaum's universal constant of 4,669201609... . Some preliminary work shows several other windows following the first chaotic one including periodic, chaotic, and a steady octamodal window; however, the windows shrink significantly in size to enable concrete quantitative conclusions to be made.

Polymeric routes to silicon carbide and silicon oxycarbide CMC

An overview of two approaches to the formation of ceramic composite matrices from polymeric precursors is presented. Copolymerization of alkyl- and alkenylsilanes (RSiH3) represents a new precursor system for the production of Beta-SiC on pyrolysis, with copolymer composition controlling polymer structure, char yield, and ceramic stoichiometry and morphology. Polysilsesquioxanes which are synthesized readily and can be handled in air serve as precursors to Si-C-O ceramics. Copolymers of phenyl and methyl silsesquioxanes display rheological properties favorable for composite fabrication; these can be tailored by control of pH, water/methoxy ratio and copolymer composition. Composites obtained from these utilize a carbon coated, eight harness satin weave Nicalon cloth reinforcement. The material exhibits nonlinear stress-strain behavior in tension.

En route noise test preliminary results

Preliminary results are reported from ground measurements of noise emitted by a full-scale advanced single-rotation turbofan model mounted on the wing of the NASA Lewis Propfan Test Assessment aircraft during test flights in October 1987. The procedures and instruments employed in the test program are described, and the data are presented in tables. The repeatability of the measurements is shown to be good within one test day, with day-to-day variations attributed to cross-wind convection. Fair agreement is found between these measurements and the predictions of ray-tracing models.

Subharmonic Route to Boundary-Layer Transition - Critical Layer Nonlinearity

The linear and nonlinear dynamics of a triad of initially linear stability waves comprising a single plane wave at fundamental frequency and two symmetric oblique waves with half the frequency and streamwise wave number of the plane wave are presented. Analysis is performed for the initial nonlinear development of the waves where the order of the oblique waves' amplitude is equal to or less than that of the plane wave. Results show that the fundamental basically follows the linear theory, while the subharmonic follows an exponential-of-an-exponential growth.

ERS-1 SAR ice routing of l'Astrolabe through the Northeast passage

The use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from the satellite ERS-1 to assist the French polar vessel 'L'Astrolabe' during its navigation through Artic sea ice in the Northeast Passage is reported. The ship spent one month on the voyage from Europe to Japan, and high resolution SAR images and ice maps based on SAR images from ERS-1 and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager were telefaxed to the ship using the Inmarsat system. The time delay from observation to the reception of SAR images aboard the ship varied from 6 hours to two days. The quality of these ice maps was compared with Russian ice maps and observations from the ship. The SAR imagery provided detailed information on ice floe distribution, ice concentration, ice types, open leads, and tracks in ice from icebreakers. The response from the Russian ice specialists on the quality of the SAR ice maps was very positive.

Direct detection of C4H2 photochemical products - Possible routes to complex hydrocarbons in planetary atmospheres

The photochemistry of diacetylene (C4H2), the largest hydrocarbon to be unambiguously identified in planetary atmospheres, is of considerable importance to understanding the mechanisms by which complex molecules are formed in the solar system. In this work, the primary products of C4H2's ultraviolet photochemistry were determined in a two-laser pump-probe scheme in which the products of C4H2 photoexcitation are detected by vacuum ultraviolet photoionization in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Three larger hydrocarbon primary products were observed with good yield in the C4H2 + C4H2 reaction: C6H2, C8H2, and C8H3. Neither C6H2 or C8H3 is anticipated by current photochemical models of the atmospheres of Titan, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Triton. The free hydrogen atoms that are released during the formation of the C8H3 and C8H2 products also may partially offset the role of C4H2 in catalyzing the recombination of free hydrogen atoms in the planetary atmospheres.
