Materials And Processes Technical Information System (MAPTIS) LDEF materials database

The Materials and Processes Technical Information System (MAPTIS) is a collection of materials data which was computerized and is available to engineers in the aerospace community involved in the design and development of spacecraft and related hardware. Consisting of various database segments, MAPTIS provides the user with information such as material properties, test data derived from tests specifically conducted for qualification of materials for use in space, verification and control, project management, material information, and various administrative requirements. A recent addition to the project management segment consists of materials data derived from the LDEF flight. This tremendous quantity of data consists of both pre-flight and post-flight data in such diverse areas as optical/thermal, mechanical and electrical properties, atomic concentration surface analysis data, as well as general data such as sample placement on the satellite, A-O flux, equivalent sun hours, etc. Each data point is referenced to the primary investigator(s) and the published paper from which the data was taken. The MAPTIS system is envisioned to become the central location for all LDEF materials data. This paper consists of multiple parts, comprising a general overview of the MAPTIS System and the types of data contained within, and the specific LDEF data element and the data contained in that segment.

CRITICA: coding region identification tool invoking comparative analysis

Gene recognition is essential to understanding existing and future DNA sequence data. CRITICA (Coding Region Identification Tool Invoking Comparative Analysis) is a suite of programs for identifying likely protein-coding sequences in DNA by combining comparative analysis of DNA sequences with more common noncomparative methods. In the comparative component of the analysis, regions of DNA are aligned with related sequences from the DNA databases; if the translation of the aligned sequences has greater amino acid identity than expected for the observed percentage nucleotide identity, this is interpreted as evidence for coding. CRITICA also incorporates noncomparative information derived from the relative frequencies of hexanucleotides in coding frames versus other contexts (i.e., dicodon bias). The dicodon usage information is derived by iterative analysis of the data, such that CRITICA is not dependent on the existence or accuracy of coding sequence annotations in the databases. This independence makes the method particularly well suited for the analysis of novel genomes. CRITICA was tested by analyzing the available Salmonella typhimurium DNA sequences. Its predictions were compared with the DNA sequence annotations and with the predictions of GenMark. CRITICA proved to be more accurate than GenMark, and moreover, many of its predictions that would seem to be errors instead reflect problems in the sequence databases. The source code of CRITICA is freely available by anonymous FTP (rdp.life.uiuc.edu in/pub/critica) and on the World Wide Web (http:/(/)rdpwww.life.uiuc.edu).

Cross-database comparisons on the greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and fossil-fuel use of plastic resin production and their post-use phase impacts

Resin production and post-use pathways have cross-database discrepancies due to different temporal/geographic representation, technologies, and assumptions. These differences can distort comparisons across alternatives and confound efforts to establish standards based on the plastics’ life-cycle impacts. Thus, this study quantifies the degree and identifies the sources of cross-database discrepancies across four LCA databases (GREET, USLCI, Ecoinvent, and GaBi) for five resin production pathways and three post-use phases. For resin production pathways, all resins showed significant cross-database discrepancy in their global warming impacts: the degree of discrepancy was significant to recommend a consistent choice of database to users any LCA comparisons across different products. For post-use phases, landfill datasets had relatively lower degree of cross-database discrepancy than incineration and mechanical recycling. Different metadata characteristics were the sources of some cross-database discrepancies while other parts could be explained by the original differences in the life-cycle inventory sourced from different producers and plants.

Recovery issues in databases using redundant disk arrays

Redundant disk arrays provide a way for achieving rapid recovery from media failures with a relatively low storage cost for large scale database systems requiring high availability. In this paper we propose a method for using redundant disk arrays to support rapid recovery from system crashes and transaction aborts in addition to their role in providing media failure recovery. A twin page scheme is used to store the parity information in the array so that the time for transaction commit processing is not degraded. Using an analytical model, we show that the proposed method achieves a significant increase in the throughput of database systems using redundant disk arrays by reducing the number of recovery operations needed to maintain the consistency of the database.

FeGenie: a comprehensive tool for the identification of iron genes and iron gene neighborhoods in genomes and metagenome assemblies

Iron is a micronutrient for nearly all life on Earth. It can be used as an electron donor and electron acceptor by iron-oxidizing and iron-reducing microorganisms and is used in a variety of biological processes, including photosynthesis and respiration. While it is the fourth most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust, iron is often limiting for growth in oxic environments because it is readily oxidized and precipitated. Much of our understanding of how microorganisms compete for and utilize iron is based on laboratory experiments. However, the advent of next-generation sequencing and surge in publicly available sequence data has made it possible to probe the structure and function of microbial communities in the environment. To bridge the gap between our understanding of iron acquisition, iron redox cycling, iron storage, and magnetosome formation in model microorganisms and the plethora of sequence data available from environmental studies, we have created a comprehensive database of hidden Markov models (HMMs) based on genes related to iron acquisition, storage, and reduction/oxidation in Bacteria and Archaea. Along with this database, we present FeGenie, a bioinformatics tool that accepts genome and metagenome assemblies as input and uses our comprehensive HMM database to annotate provided datasets with respect to iron-related genes and gene neighborhood. An important contribution of this tool is the efficient identification of genes involved in iron oxidation and dissimilatory iron reduction, which have been largely overlooked by standard annotation pipelines. We validated FeGenie against a selected set of 28 isolate genomes and showcase its utility in exploring iron genes present in 27 metagenomes, 4 isolate genomes from human oral biofilms, and 17 genomes from candidate organisms, including members of the candidate phyla radiation. We show that FeGenie accurately identifies iron genes in isolates. Furthermore, analysis of metagenomes using FeGenie demonstrates that the iron gene repertoire and abundance of each environment is correlated with iron richness. While this tool will not replace the reliability of culture-dependent analyses of microbial physiology, it provides reliable predictions derived from the most up-to-date genetic markers. FeGenie’s database will be maintained and continually updated as new genes are discovered.

C2-Related Incidents Reported by UAS Pilots

It has been estimated that aviation accidents are typically preceded by numerous minor incidents arising from the same causal factors that ultimately produced the accident. Accident databases provide in-depth information on a relatively small number of occurrences, however incident databases have the potential to provide insights into the human factors of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) operations based on a larger volume of less-detailed reports. Currently, there is a lack of incident data dealing with the human factors of unmanned aircraft systems. An exploratory study is being conducted to examine the feasibility of collecting voluntary critical incident reports from RPAS pilots. Twenty-three experienced RPAS pilots volunteered to participate in focus groups in which they described critical incidents from their own experience. Participants were asked to recall (1) incidents that revealed a system flaw, or (2) highlighted a case where the human operator contributed to system resilience or mission success. Participants were asked to only report incidents that could be included in a public document. During each focus group session, a note taker produced a de-identified written record of the incident narratives. At the end of the session, participants reviewed each written incident report, and made edits and corrections as necessary. The incidents were later analyzed to identify contributing factors, with a focus on design issues that either hindered or assisted the pilot during the events. A total of 90 incidents were reported. This presentation focuses on incidents that involved the management of the command and control (C2) link. The identified issues include loss of link, interference from undesired transmissions, voice latency, accidental control transfer, and the use of the lost link timer, or lost link OK features.

Fast transients - A search in X-rays for short flares, bursts, and related phenomena

The HEAO 1 A-2 database on fast high energy X-ray transients was examined for any discernible regularities. The data were taken over the interval 1977-79 with six collimated multiwire, multilayer, proportional counters that had a sensitivity sufficient for detecting events lasting 1-5 sec at energies as low as 8-120 keV. The entire sky was surveyed completely three times in the observational period. Best-fit position, error box corners, mean transient flux and quiescent flux data are provided for all six of the type 3 events that were found. All the sources were within the Galaxy. The duration of the events ranged from 60-2000 sec. The limited number of events observed leads to estimates of 10,000-200,000 events per year. It is suggested that all the events originate from hard flares occurring at a rate of 20,000/yr on dMe/dKe stars.

A database containing operational experience in spaceflight

A relational data base, called the Operational Experience Data Base, was constructed to electronically store and organize human-factors information from the Skylab and Space Shuttle missions. The taxonomy used to organize this data base builds on the one used for the Skylab human-machine experiments. This information can be used by NASA engineers and operations personnel to remedy design problems, or expand on design successes. Work to improve and expand the data base is underway.

MiR-205–5p suppresses angiogenesis in gastric cancer by downregulating the expression of VEGFA and FGF1

Highlights: • MiR-205-5p was commonly downregulated in GC tissues from TCGA database and our hospital, and these events were associated with a worse TNM stagedistant metastasis and poor survival. • MiR-205-5p and CD31 expressions were negatively inter-related within GC tissues from TCGA database and our hospital. • GC cell lines expressed lower level of miR-205-5p significantly as compared with the normal gastric cell line. • MiR-205-5p upregulation significantly impaired proliferation and colony formation of GC cells and neovascularization induced by GC cells in vitro and in vivo. • The angiogenesis and ERK-signaling were depressed by VEGFA and FGF1 downregulation induced by miR-205-5p overexpression. The miR-205-5p inhibitor promoted malignant phenotypes by enhancing VEGFA and FGF1 expressions, as well as the activation of ERK-signaling. Anti-angiogenic therapy represents one of the most promising treatment modalities for human cancers. However, the response to antiangiogenic therapy in gastric cancer (GC) remains dismal. To help identify new strategies for antiangiogenic therapy in GC, we evaluated miR-205–5p expression in GC tissues from TCGA database and our hospital, and its functions in angiogenesis were explored in vitro and in vivo. We investigated miR-205–5p expression and microvessel densities (MVDs) in GC tissues and liver metastases from patients. The function and mechanisms of miR-205–5p were examined in human cell lines and in xenograft mouse models. Associations between miR-205–5p expression and clinical characteristics were analyzed using either Pearson's χ{sup 2} test or Fisher's exact test. Differences in overall survival (OS) distributions were evaluated using the log-rank test. Differences in measurement data were compared using Student's t-test and one-way ANOVA. We found that miR-205–5p expression was downregulated in GC tissues and was negatively correlated with CD31 expression in both TCGA and our clinical samples. GC cell lines expressed low levels of miR-205–5p, and miR-205–5p upregulation significantly impaired the proliferation and angiogenesis of GC cells. Moreover, vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) expression and activation of extracellular-related kinase (ERK) signaling were suppressed by miR-205–5p. MiR-205–5p inhibition promoted malignant phenotypes by enhancing VEGFA and FGF1 expression, as well as the activation of ERK signaling. Angiogenesis and ERK signaling were decreased in response to VEGFA and FGF1 downregulation induced by miR-205–5p overexpression. The dual-luciferase reporter assay showed that VEGFA and FGF1 were direct targets of miR-205–5p. Xenograft mouse models revealed that miR-205–5p suppressed tumor growth by inhibiting neovascularization. Altogether, these results demonstrate that miR-205–5p suppresses angiogenesis in GC by attenuating the expression of VEGFA and FGF1, indicating that upregulation of miR-205–5p may represent as an antiangiogenic therapy for GC.

Semantic Theme Analysis of Pilot Incident Reports

Pilots report accidents or incidents during take-off, on flight and landing to airline authorities and Federal aviation authority as well. The description of pilot reports for an incident contains technical terms related to Flight instruments and operations. Normal text mining approaches collect keywords from text documents and relate them among documents that are stored in database. Present approach will extract specific theme analysis of incident reports and semantically relate hierarchy of terms assigning weights of themes. Once the theme extraction has been performed for a given document, a unique key can be assigned to that document to cross linking the documents. Semantic linking will be used to categorize the documents based on specific rules that can help an end-user to analyze certain types of accidents. This presentation outlines the architecture of text mining for pilot incident reports for autonomous categorization of pilot incident reports using semantic theme analysis.

Structural Flexibility of Metal Chelate Complexes and Its Relation to Supramolecular Chemistry

In this study, crystal structures of metal chelate and related complexes in the Cambridge Structural Database have been analyzed, with respect to their use as components in supramolecular metal-organic compounds. In β-diketonate complexes, the distribution of angles between ligands is relatively broad; other ligands, such as 2,2'-bipyridine, yield significantly narrower distributions. According to the principle of structure correlation, these distributions reflect the ease of distorting the various families of complexes. A comparison through density functional theory calculations also indicates that angular distortions require significantly less energy for M(β-diketonate) 3 than for M(2,2'-bipyridine) 3 . The differences are likely to affect the construction of supramolecular systems from different combinations of metals and ligands, including the likelihood that the desired structures will be obtained.

Large-scale computational polymer solubility predictions and applications to dissolution-based plastic recycling

Dissolution-based plastic recycling is a promising approach to separate and recover high quality pure polymer resins from multicomponent plastic waste by exploiting differences in polymer solubility. The design of a dissolution-based polymer recycling process requires the selection of appropriate solvent systems and operating temperatures to dissolve only target polymers. Determining these parameters experimentally is challenging due to the wide range of solvents and temperatures possible for a given set of target polymers. In this work, we report a computational scheme that employs molecular dynamics simulations and the Conductor-like Screening Model for Realistic Solvents to predict polymer solubilities. Using this scheme, we established a computational solubility database for 8 common polymers and 1007 solvents at multiple temperatures and measured selected solubilities experimentally to validate computational predictions. Analysis of functional groups within this large database then provides chemical heuristics relating the molecular structures of good and non-solvents for selected polymers. We further developed a tool that automates the selection of solvents for all possible sequences in which target polymers can be selectively dissolved to guide the design of dissolution-based plastic recycling processes. Here, we demonstrate the application of these methods via multiple experimental case studies of representative dissolution-based polymer recycling processes in which pure polymer resins were successfully recovered from physical mixtures of polymers.

Check the Storage Stack: Comparing Behind-the-Meter Energy Storage State Policy Stacks in the United States

A variety of studies and disparate datasets track state energy storage polices, but these datasets do not cover all BTM-related storage policy. Moreover, these databases do not align these policies with the policy stacking framework. Thus, it is unclear what BTM storage policies are adopted across the country, what should comprise a complete storage policy framework or stack, and how states policies compare against that stack. This report addresses this gap in the literature by developing a state policy stack for BTM battery storage that we compare across all fifty states. This first-of-its-kind BTM storage policy stack includes 11 parent policy categories, and 31 associated policies divided across the market preparation, creation, and expansion policy components.

Earth observations during Space Shuttle flight STS-31: The earth from 600 km - April 24 through 29, 1990

Images taken aboard the Space Shuttle flight STS-31 are presented and discussed in terms of documenting key features and describing regional interrelationships. The images comprise regional views and continuous swath maps that are intended to serve as linkage and/or context for related photographs in the shuttle database. The Linhof hand-held mapping camera is employed at 20-s intervals resulting in contiguous swaths with 75-percent overlap, and Hasselblad images are taken simultaneously to complement the swaths. Specific examples of the products are given for regions including Lake Eyre, Australia, Madagascar, and Central America; specific landforms are also shown including the El Chichon volcano, and an example is shown of the differential heating of land and water. The photographs are considered useful for mapping large-scale features and for providing context for smaller image-data products.

A Combined Solar and Geomagnetic Index for Thermospheric Climate

Infrared radiation from nitric oxide (NO) at 5.3 Â is a primary mechanism by which the thermosphere cools to space. The SABER instrument on the NASA TIMED satellite has been measuring thermospheric cooling by NO for over 13 years. Physically, changes in NO emission are due to changes in temperature, atomic oxygen, and the NO density. These physical changes however are driven by changes in solar irradiance and changes in geomagnetic conditions. We show that the SABER time series of globally integrated infrared power (Watts) radiated by NO can be replicated accurately by a multiple linear regression fit using the F10.7, Ap, and Dst indices. This fit enables several fundamental properties of NO cooling to be determined as well as their variability with time, permitting reconstruction of the NO power time series back nearly 70 years with extant databases of these indices. The relative roles of solar ultraviolet and geomagnetic processes in determining the NO cooling are derived and shown to be solar cycle dependent. This reconstruction provides a long-term time series of an integral radiative constraint on thermospheric climate that can be used to test climate models.
