The phase and turbulent properties of Cattail

ABSTRACT A recent publication discovered one of the largest filamentary neutral hydrogen features dubbed Cattail from high-resolution Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope observations that might be a new galactic arm of the Milky Way. We evaluate the turbulent and phase properties of Cattail via the newly developed Velocity Decomposition Algorithm and Force Balancing Model. We discover that if there exists a phase transition, then Cattail is unlikely in the cold neutral media phase. We also show that the Cattail is two disjoint features in caustics space, suggesting that the Cattail has two different turbulent systems. We check the spectra of the individual system separated via VDA to confirm this argument. We do not exclude the existence of smaller scale cold media being embedded within this structure.

QSO photometric redshifts from SDSS, WISE, and GALEX colours

ABSTRACT Machine learning techniques, specifically the k-nearest neighbour algorithm applied to optical band colours, have had some success in predicting photometric redshifts of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs): Although the mean of differences between the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts, Δ$z$, is close to zero, the distribution of these differences remains wide and distinctly non-Gaussian. As per our previous empirical estimate of photometric redshifts, we find that the predictions can be significantly improved by adding colours from other wavebands, namely the near-infrared and ultraviolet. Self-testing this, by using half of the 33 643 strong QSO sample to train the algorithm, results in a significantly narrower spread in Δ$z$ for the remaining half of the sample. Using the whole QSO sample to train the algorithm, the same set of magnitudes return a similar spread in Δ$z$ for a sample of radio sources (quasars). Although the matching coincidence is relatively low (739 of the 3663 sources having photometry in the relevant bands), this is still significantly larger than from the empirical method (2 per cent) and thus may provide a method with which to obtain redshifts for the vast number of continuum radio sources expected to be detected with the next generation of large radio telescopes.

Collisional Excitation and Non-LTE Modeling of Interstellar Chiral Propylene Oxide

Abstract The first set of theoretical rotational cross sections for propylene oxide (CH 3 CHCH 2 O) colliding with cold He atoms has been obtained at the full quantum level using a high-accuracy potential energy surface. By scaling the collision reduced mass, rotational rate coefficients for collisions with para-H 2 are deduced in the temperature range 5–30 K. These collisional coefficients are combined with radiative data in a non-LTE radiative transfer model in order to reproduce observations of propylene oxide made toward the Sagittarius B2(N) molecular cloud with the Green Bank and Parkes radio telescopes. The three detected absorption lines are found to probe the cold (∼10 K) and translucent ( n H ∼ 2000 cm −3 ) gas in the outer edges of the extended Sgr B2(N) envelope. The derived column density for propylene oxide is N tot ∼ 3 × 10 12 cm −2 , corresponding to a fractional abundance relative to total hydrogen of ∼2.5 × 10 −11 . The present results are expected to help our understanding of the chemistry of propylene oxide, including a potential enantiomeric excess, in the cold interstellar medium.

On the H I Content of MaNGA Major Merger Pairs

The role of H I content in galaxy interactions is still under debate. To study the H I content of galaxy pairs at different merging stages, we compile a sample of 66 major-merger galaxy pairs and 433 control galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) MaNGA IFU survey. In this study, we adopt kinematic asymmetry as a new effective indicator to describe the merging stage of galaxy pairs. With archival data from the HI-MaNGA survey and new observations from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we investigate the differences in H I gas fraction (f H I ), star formation rate (SFR), and H I star formation efficiency (SFE H I ) between the pair and control samples. Our results suggest that the H I gas fraction of major-merger pairs on average is marginally decreased by ~15% relative to isolated galaxies, implying mild H I depletion during galaxy interactions. Compared to isolated galaxies, pre-passage paired galaxies have similar f H I , SFR, and SFE H I , while pairs during the pericentric passage have weakly decreased f H I (–0.10 ± 0.05 dex), significantly enhanced SFR (0.42 ± 0.11 dex), and SFE H I (0.48 ± 0.12 dex). When approaching the apocenter, paired galaxies show marginally decreased f H I (–0.05 ± 0.04 dex), comparable SFR (0.04 ± 0.06 dex), and SFE H I (0.08 ± 0.08 dex). We propose that the marginally detected H i depletion may originate from the gas consumption in fueling the enhanced H2 reservoir of galaxy pairs. In addition, new FAST observations also reveal a H I absorber (N H I ~ 4.7 × 10 21 cm –2 ), which may suggest gas infalling and the triggering of active galactic nuclei activity.

FAST Drift Scan Survey for Ηι Intensity Mapping: I. Preliminary Data Analysis

This work presents the initial results of the drift-scan observation for the neutral hydrogen (Hi) intensity mapping survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The data analyzed in this work were collected in night observations from 2019 through 2021. The primary findings are based on 28 hr of drift-scan observation carried out over 7 nights in 2021, which covers 60 deg 2 sky area. Our main findings are, first, our calibration strategy can successfully correct both the temporal and bandpass gain variation over the 4 hr drift-scan observation. Second, the continuum maps of the surveyed region are made with frequency resolution of 28 kHz and pixel area of $_{2.95\,{\mathrm{arcmin}}^{2}}$. The pixel noise levels of the continuum maps are slightly higher than the forecast assuming $T$ sys = 20 K, which are 36.0 mK (for 10.0 s integration time) at the 1050–1150 MHz band, and 25.9 mK (for 16.7 s integration time) at the 1323–1450 MHz band, respectively. Third, the flux-weighted differential number count is consistent with the NRAO-VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalog down to the confusion limit ~7 mJy beam –1 . Finally, the continuum flux measurements of the sources are consistent with those found in the literature. The difference in the flux measurement of 81 isolated NVSS sources is about 6.3%. Our research offers a systematic analysis for the FAST Hi intensity mapping drift-scan survey and serves as a helpful resource for further cosmology and associated galaxies sciences with the FAST drift-scan survey.

H I Gas and Star Formation in Major Galaxy Pairs from the FAST All Sky H I Survey (FASHI)

Atomic hydrogen (H I ) plays a fundamental role in fueling star formation in galaxies. However, the behavior of H I gas in interacting systems, particularly galaxy pairs, remains elusive. In this work, we investigate the H I content of major mergers by crossmatching the extragalactic H I catalog from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) All-Sky H I Survey with a previously established sample of isolated galaxy pairs. With the superior sensitivity of FAST, we have constructed the largest sample of major mergers with H I detections, consisting of 440 galaxy pairs: 364 spiral-spiral (S+S) and 76 spiral-elliptical (S+E) systems. We examine the H I gas fraction (f H I ), star formation rate (SFR), and H I star formation efficiency (SFE H I = SFR/M H I ) for individual galaxies in pairs. The control sample is matched in both stellar mass and redshift. We find that paired galaxies, particularly those in pairs with small projected separations (d p < 50 h −1 kpc), exhibit systematically lower (by 8.8%) H I gas fractions compared to the control galaxies. The SFR is enhanced for galaxies in the S+S pairs. The SFE H I is ∼15% higher for galaxies in the S+S pairs than in the control galaxies, while spiral galaxies in the S+E pairs show no significant difference in SFE H I compared to the control sample. These findings suggest that the merger process triggers efficient H I gas depletion and enhances star formation, especially in close S+S pairs. Notably, our sample includes 26 red spirals in paired systems. These galaxies exhibit H I deficiency and suppressed star formation activity compared to the isolated galaxies, indicating that interactions may affect quiescent spirals differently, potentially due to mechanisms similar to those of ellipticals.

Rejuvenating Star Formation Activity in an Early-type Dwarf Galaxy, LEDA 1915372, with Accreted H i Gas

We report a rare astrophysical phenomenon, in which an early-type dwarf galaxy (dE), LEDA 1915372, is accreting gas from a nearby star-forming dwarf galaxy, MRK 0689, and is rejuvenating star formation activity at the center. Both LEDA 1915372 and MRK 0689 have similar brightness of M r = -16.99 and -16.78 mag, respectively. They are located in a small group environment, separated by a sky-projected distance of 20.27 kpc (up to 70 kpc in three dimension), and have a relative line-of-sight radial velocity of 6 km s -1 . The observation of 21 cm emission with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope provides strong evidence of interaction between the pair of dwarf galaxies in terms of neutral hydrogen (Hi) morphology and kinematics. In particular, the Hi map reveals that the two galaxies are clearly connected by a gas bridge, and the gas components of both LEDA 1915372 and MRK 0689 share a common direction of rotation. We also find that the Hi emission peak deviates from LEDA 1915372 toward its optical blue plume, suggesting a tidal origin of ongoing central star formation. Our findings provide a new path to the formation of blue-cored dEs.

A new probe of μ Hz gravitational waves with FRB timing

We propose Fast Radio Burst (FRB) timing, which uses the precision measurements of the arrival time differences of repeated FRB signals along multiple sightlines, as a new probe of gravitational waves (GWs) around nHz to μ Hz frequencies, with the highest frequency limited by FRB repeating period. The anticipated experiment requires a sightline separation of tens of AU, achieved by sending radio telescopes to space. We find the signal of arrival time difference induced by GWs depends only on the local GWs in the solar system and we can correlate the measurements from different FRB sources or the same source with different repeaters, which leads to a better sensitivity with a larger number of FRB events detected. The projected sensitivity shows this method is a competitive probe in the nHz to μ Hz frequency range. It can fill the ‘ μ Hz gap’ between pulsar timing arrays and Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and is complementary to other proposals of GW detection in this frequency band.

The Goonhilly 85-ft. steerable dish aerial

The choice of the basic type of aerial for a satellite communication ground station is of major importance in view of its influence on the overall performance, cost and time to complete the installation. In the case of the Post Office satellite communication earth station at Goonhilly Downs, Cornwall, a decision was made early in 1961 to use an 85-ft diameter steerable paraboloidal dish aerial, without a radome for tests with the Telstar and Relay, and other communication satellites. Tests with smaller paraboloidal dish aerials with the feed in the aperture plane had shown that a satisfactory electrical performance could be obtained, and experience with the 250-ft diameter radio telescope at Jodrell Bank had shown that the mechanical problems could be overcome. An important factor in the present case was the limited time--less than one year--available for the design, manufacture, construction and testing of the aerial.
