Gauge theory of giant phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals

Here, we develop a quantitative theory of phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals. Our theory is based on an emergent gauge field approach to the electron-phonon coupling, applicable to gapless systems. We find that the magnetic moment is directly proportional to the electrical Hall conductivity through the phonon Hall viscosity. Our theory is combined with the first-principles calculations, allowing us to quantitatively implement it to realistic materials. Magnetic moments are found to be of the order of a Bohr magneton for Raman-active phonon modes in graphene and Cd 3 ⁢As 2 . Our results provide practical guidance for the dynamical generation of large magnetization in quantum materials.

First-principles study of magnetic states and the anomalous Hall conductivity of M Nb 3 S 6 ( M = Co, Fe, Mn, and Ni)

Here, inspired by the observation of the extremely large anomalous Hall effect in the absence of applied magnetic fields or uniform magnetization in CoNb 3 S 6 [Nat. Commun. 9, 3280 (2018); Phys. Rev. Research 2, 023051 (2020)], we perform a first-principles study of this and related compounds of the MNb 3 S 6 type with different transition metal M ions to determine their magnetic orders and the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). We find that noncoplanar antiferromagnetic ordering is favored relative to collinear or coplanar order in the case of M = Co, Fe, and Ni, while ferromagnetic ordering is favored in MnNb 3 S 6 at low temperatures. The AHC in these materials with noncoplanar spin ordering can reach about e 2 /h per crystalline layer, while being negligible for coplanar and collinear cases. We also find that the AHC depends sensitively on doping and reaches a maximum for intermediate values of the local spin exchange potential between 0.3 and 0.8 eV. Our AHC results are consistent with the reported Hall measurements in CoNb 3 S 6 and suggest a possibility of similarly large anomalous Hall effects in related compounds.

Direct detection system for full-field nanoscale X-ray diffraction-contrast imaging

Recent developments in X-ray science provide methods to probe deeply embedded mesoscale grain structures and spatially resolve them using dark field X-ray microscopy (DFXM). Extending this technique to investigate weak diffraction signals such as magnetic systems, quantum materials and thin films prove challenging due to available detection methods and incident X-ray flux at the sample. We present a direct detection method developed in conjunction with KAImaging which focuses on DFXM studies in the hard X-ray range of 10s of keV and above capable of approaching nanoscale resolution. Additionally, we compare this direct detection scheme with routinely used scintillator-based optical detection and achieve an order of magnitude improvement in exposure times allowing for imaging of weakly diffracting ordered systems.

Quasi-one-dimensional Pb 5 Re 3 O 15 : A 5 d realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) magnetic compounds connect the exact solutions of low-dimensional magnetic geometries, which promise quantum spin liquid behavior and exotic quasiparticles, with real-world materials, in which competing magnetic interactions affect their implementation in quantum information science. Here, the structural determination and quasi-1D magnetic behavior of a previously unreported compound, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , is presented. Like the anisotropic triangular A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) materials, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 contains [ReO 5 ] square pyramids inserted into anion-centered quasi-two-dimensional layers and hosts spin-1/2 moments on the Re 6+ ions. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , however, has a more ideal quasi-1D geometry than the A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 materials, with larger interchain distances and interlayer spacing. Quasi-1D magnetic behavior in Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is confirmed by fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility with the Bonner-Fisher model for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled chain, yielding an intrachain coupling constant of |J|/k B =54.5K. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is highly insulating at room temperature, and heat capacity data below 10 K reveal a linear-T contribution that suggests the presence of low-temperature spinon excitations. Finally, with a lack of three-dimensional ordering down to at least 0.6 K, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is proposed as a model system for studying the quantum magnetism of quasi-1D Heisenberg chains in a real-world 5d 1 antiferromagnetic material.

Anomalous proximitized transport in metal/quantum magnet heterostructure Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 /Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7

Fluctuations of quantum spins play a crucial role in the emergence of exotic magnetic phases and excitations. The lack of the charge degree of freedom in insulating quantum magnets, however, precludes such fluctuations from mediating electronic transport. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuations of a localized frustrated magnet induce strong proximitized charge transport of the conduction electrons in a synthetic heterostructure comprising an epitaxial Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 ultrathin film on a single crystal of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . The proximity effects are evidenced by the scaling behavior of the Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 resistance in correspondence with the dynamic scaling of the dynamic spincorrelation function of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which is a result of quantum fluctuations near a multiphase quantum critical point. The proximitized transport in Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 can be effectively tuned by a magnetic field through suppressing the quantum spin fluctuations (QSFs) as well as inducing transitions via magnetic anisotropy in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . In this study, we establish a pathway for harnessing QSFs in magnetic insulators with electric transport, offering exciting prospects for potential applications in the realm of quantum spintronics.

Quantum Chemical Treatment of Strongly Correlated Magnetic Systems Based on Heavy Elements. Final Report

The objective of this project over the years has been to develop novel quantum chemical methods and employ them to study the chemistry of systems containing actinides, and transactinides. We have focused on their electronic and spectroscopic properties, their reactivity and utilization as single molecule magnets. We have developed wave-function based methods that are optimal to treat strongly correlated systems, namely systems with many electronic configurations that are all important and should be treated on an equal foot. Moreover, relativistic effects have to be included in the model, with special focus on spin-orbit coupling. We have derived our theories and developed our codes and made them available to the community as parts of open source packages. We have modelled systems in collaboration with experimentalists in the program, so that we could address some of the questions that are relevant to this community. We have also worked in collaboration with people at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories on a project on super-heavy atoms. We hope that our theoretical predictions will inspire novel experiments. We have trained about 10 students/postdocs during this period, which are now faculty, researchers at national laboratories and in companies.

Dynamical properties of a driven dissipative dimerized $S$ =1/2 chain

We consider the dynamical properties of a gapped quantum spin system coupled to the electric field of a laser, which drives the resonant excitation of specific phonon modes that modulate the magnetic interactions. Here, we deduce the quantum master equations governing the time-evolution of both the lattice and spin sectors, by developing a Lindblad formalism with bath operators providing an explicit description of their respective phonon-mediated damping terms. We investigate the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) of the spin system established by a continuous driving, delineating parameter regimes in driving frequency, damping, and spin-phonon coupling for the establishment of physically meaningful NESS and their related nontrivial properties. Focusing on the regime of generic weak spin-phonon coupling, we characterize the NESS by their frequency and wave-vector content, explore their transient and relaxation behavior, and discuss the energy flow, the system temperature, and the critical role of the type of bath adopted. Our study lays a foundation for the quantitative modeling of experiments currently being designed to control coherent many-body spin states in quantum magnetic materials.

Stripe magnetic order and field-induced quantum criticality in the perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CsCeSe 2

The two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) is a textbook example of frustrated magnetic systems. Despite its simplicity, the TLAF model exhibits a highly rich and complex magnetic phase diagram, featuring numerous distinct ground states that can be stabilized through frustrated next-nearest-neighbor couplings or anisotropy. In this paper, we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the TLAF material CsCeSe 2 . The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) together with specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations of crystalline electric field suggest that the ground state of Ce ions is a Kramers doublet with strong easy-plane anisotropy. Elastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate the presence of stripe-yz magnetic order that develops below T N = 0.35K, with the zero-field ordered moment of m Ce ≈ 0.65μ B . Application of magnetic field first increases the ordering temperature by about 20% at the intermediate field region and eventually suppresses the stripe order in favor of the field-polarized ferromagnetic state via a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT). The field-induced response demonstrates sizable anisotropy for different in-plane directions, B ∥ a and B ⊥ ⁢a, which indicates the presence of bond-dependent coupling in the spin Hamiltonian. As a result, we further show theoretically that the presence of anisotropic bond-dependent interactions can change the universality class of QPT for B ∥ a and B ⊥ ⁢a.

Intrinsic quantized anomalous Hall effect in a moiré heterostructure

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect combines topology and magnetism to produce precisely quantized Hall resistance at zero magnetic field. We report the observation of a QAH effect in twisted bilayer graphene aligned to hexagonal boron nitride. The effect is driven by intrinsic strong interactions, which polarize the electrons into a single spin- and valley-resolved moiré miniband with Chern number C = 1. In contrast to magnetically doped systems, the measured transport energy gap is larger than the Curie temperature for magnetic ordering, and quantization to within 0.1% of the von Klitzing constant persists to temperatures of several kelvin at zero magnetic field. Electrical currents as small as 1 nanoampere controllably switch the magnetic order between states of opposite polarization, forming an electrically rewritable magnetic memory.

Quantum critical behavior of the hyperkagome magnet Mn 3 CoSi

β -Mn-type family alloys Mn 3 T X ( T = Co , Rh, and Ir; X = Si and Ge) have a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) corner-shared triangular network, i.e., the hyperkagome lattice. The antiferromagnet Mn 3 RhSi shows magnetic short-range order over a wide temperature range of approximately 500 K above the Néel temperature T N of 190 K. In this family of compounds, as the lattice parameter decreases, the long-range magnetic ordering temperature decreases. Mn 3 CoSi has the smallest lattice parameter and the lowest T N in the family. The quantum critical point (QCP) from AF to the quantum paramagnetic state is expected near a cubic lattice parameter of 6.15 Å . Although the Néel temperature of Mn 3 CoSi is only 140 K, the emergence of the quantum critical behavior in Mn 3 CoSi is discussed. We study how the magnetic short-range order appears in Mn 3 CoSi by using neutron scattering, μ SR , and bulk characterization such as specific heat capacity. According to the results, the neutron scattering intensity of the magnetic short-range order in Mn 3 CoSi does not change much at low temperatures from that of Mn 3 RhSi , although the μ SR short-range order temperature of Mn 3 CoSi is largely suppressed to 240 K from that of Mn 3 RhSi . Correspondingly, the volume fraction of the magnetic short-range order regions, as shown by the initial asymmetry drop ratio of μ SR above T N , also becomes small. Instead, the electronic-specific heat coefficient γ of Mn 3 CoSi is the largest in this Mn 3 T Si system, possibly due to the low-energy spin fluctuation near the quantum critical point. Spin Squeezing as a Probe of Emergent Quantum Orders

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments can reveal local properties in materials, but are often limited by the low signal-to-noise ratio. Spin squeezed states have an improved resolution below the Heisenberg limit in one of the spin components, and have been extensively used to improve the sensitivity of atomic clocks, for example [1]. Interacting and entangled spin ensembles with non-linear coupling are a natural candidate for implementing squeezing. Furthermore, we propose measurement of the spin-squeezing parameter that itself can act as a local probe of emergent orders in quantum materials. In particular, we demonstrate how to investigate an anisotropic electric field gradient via its coupling to the nuclear quadrupole moment. While squeezed spin states are pure, the squeezing parameter can be estimated for both pure and mixed states. We evaluate the range of fields and temperatures for which a thermal-equilibrium state is sufficient to improve the resolution in an NMR experiment and probe relevant parameters of the quadrupole Hamiltonian, including its anisotropy.

Photoinduced frustration modulation in 𝜅-type quantum spin liquid candidates

Geometric frustration is a key parameter controlling electronic and magnetic properties of quantum spin liquid systems, yet remains challenging to tune. Here, we coherently drive molecular vibrations with midinfrared pulses in two organic quantum spin liquid candidates, the insulating 𝜅−(BEDT−TTF) 2⁢ Cu 2 ⁢(CN) 3 and the metallic 𝜅−(BEDT−TTF) 4 ⁢Hg 2.89 ⁢Br 8 , and probe their electronic response through ultrafast reflectivity measurements. We observe a nonlinear coupling between local molecular vibrations and nonlocal phonons, which is expected to directly modulate the geometric frustration of their triangular lattice. Furthermore, our findings establish a promising route to dynamically control frustration in nonbipartite quantum materials.

Spin Texture Control and Magnetic Gap Engineering in a Ferromagnetic Insulator–Topological Insulator Sandwiched Heterostructure

Quantum materials that combine magnetism with topological order are emerging as key platforms for next-generation spintronics and low-energy electronics. They enable the realization of emergent quantum phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator states. The ferromagnetic insulator (FMI)/topological insulator (TI)/FMI sandwich structure of a single-septuple layer (1SL) MnBi 2 Te 4 /four-quintuple layer (4QL) Bi 2 Te 3 /1SL MnBi 2 Te 4 holds great potential to achieve such desirable quantum phenomena at an elevated temperature, owing to its large Dirac point band gap and high Curie temperature. Here, for this work, spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) is employed to directly verify that the band gap arises from broken time-reversal symmetry via proximity-driven magnetization. This study demonstrates direct control of the spin state via external magnetic fields and unambiguously confirms the exchange interaction as the gap-opening mechanism. The robust magnetic gap and controllable spin texture make this heterostructure a suitable candidate for spintronic applications and magnetic topological quantum phases.

Magnetic Effect of Dopants on Bright and Dark Excitons in Strongly Confined Mn-Doped CsPbI 3 Quantum Dots

We investigated the magnetic effect of Mn 2+ ions on an exciton of Mn-doped CsPbI 3 quantum dots (QDs), where we looked for the signatures of an exciton magnetic polaron known to produce a large effective magnetic field in Mn-doped CdSe QDs. In contrast to Mn-doped CdSe QDs that can produce ~100 T of magnetic field upon photoexcitation, manifested as a large change in the energy and relaxation dynamics of a bright exciton, Mn-doped CsPbI 3 QDs exhibited little influence of a magnetic dopant on the behavior of a bright exciton. Furthermore, a μs-lived dark exciton in CsPbI 3 QDs showed 40% faster decay in the presence of Mn 2+ , equivalent to the effect of ~3 T of an external magnetic field. While further study is necessary to fully understand the origin of the large difference in the magneto-optic property of an exciton in two systems, we consider that the difference in antiferromagnetic coupling of the dopants is an important contributing factor.
