XES_Neo_Public

XES Neo is a fitting software that was based on the already approved EXAFS Neo genetic algorithm fitting software code. Using the principles of genetics, data fitting is done for x-ray emission spectroscopy data. Using the EXAFS Neo open source code, as well as the open source xes_neo code written by other collaborators, a new final repository for XES Neo was created with several necessary changes for general user use.

Data for publication: "A fresh take: Seasonal changes in terrestrial freshwater inputs impact salt marsh hydrology and vegetation dynamics"

This data repository contains data associated with the manuscript "A fresh take: Seasonal changes in terrestrial freshwater inputs impact salt marsh hydrology and vegetation dynamics". This study was conducted at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve in Watsonville, California from October 2019 - June 2022. We sought to understand the role of shallow freshwater inputs from adjacent uplands on salt marsh hydrologic behavior and vegetation productivity. This dataset contains CSV files of the following: daily salt marsh subsurface water level and pore water conductivity, monthly vegetation survey measurements, soil core data. Estuary surface water level, conductivity, and local precipitation were downloaded from the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (Centralized Data Management Office) at https://cdmo.baruch.sc.edu/.

Computational Data Associated with the publication: Formation of a Decanuclear Organometallic Dysprosium Complex via a Radical–Radical Cross–Coupling Reaction

Over the years, polynuclear cyclic or torus complexes have attracted increasing interest due to their unique metal topologies and properties. However, the isolation of polynuclear cyclic organometallic complexes is extremely challenging due to their inherent reactivity, which stems from the labile and reactive metal‐carbon bonds. In this study, the pyrazine ligand undergoes a radical‐radical cross‐coupling reaction leading to the formation of a decanuclear [(Cp*)20Dy10(L1)10] ⋅ 12(C7H8) (1; where L1 = anion of 2‐prop‐2‐enyl‐2H‐pyrazine; Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) complex, where all DyIII metal centres are bridged by the anionic L1 ligand. Amongst the family of polynuclear Ln organometallic complexes bearing CpR2Lnx units (CpR = substituted cyclopentadienyl), 1 features the highest nuclearity obtained to date. In‐depth computational studies were conducted to elucidate the proposed reaction mechanism and formation of L1, while probing of the magnetic properties of 1, revealed slow magnetic relaxation upon application of a static dc field.

Discrete Element Method Analysis for Metal Powders Used in Additive Manufacturing, and DEM Simulation Tutorial Using LIGGGHTS-PUBLIC [PowerPoint and paper]

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a method of analysis to evaluate the dynamic interactions between granular particles. This method has been used in the pharmaceutical industry to improve the powder compaction process for tablet manufacturing. There are also applications in agriculture, food industry, and manufacturing. Direct energy deposition is an additive manufacturing technique which uses metallic powders fed through a nozzle, melted using a directed laser, and transformed into a solid object layer by layer. One way of feeding metal particles into the system involves the use of a vibrating hopper. Given a specified amplitude and frequency input, the hopper will enable the powder to travel up a path, and inject through the system with assistance from a stream of gas. The mechanical properties of a printed object can vary, depending on the characteristics of the powder flow and the particles’ as-received properties. Improved understanding of dynamic interactions of flowing powders could enable additive manufacturing components with 2D or 3D variations in mechanical properties, e.g., density. This work uses DEM simulation software to investigate the effects of particle cohesion, friction, and density on the quality of the flow by performing an angle of repose simulation, which is often used as a metric to evaluate the flowability of powders.

The MicroBooNE Single-Photon Low-Energy Excess Search (Public Note 1087)

MicroBooNE is a short baseline neutrino experiment at Fermilab designed to address the low energy excess observed by the MiniBooNE experiment. This note describes and presents preliminary results for the MicroBooNE analysis developed to address this excess as a single photon plus one or zero protons in the final state. The analysis assumes neutrino neutral current Δ resonance production followed by Δ radiative decay on argon (NC Δ → Nγ ) as the "signal model"; event reconstruction and selection have been developed and optimized in order to maximize efficiency and reduce cosmogenic and other beam-related backgrounds to the NC Δ → Nγ signal. We present the analysis methodology and validation checks performed on limited-statistics open data sets, corresponding to 5 x10 19 protons on target (POT), following a blind analysis, as well as the projected sensitivities for testing the Standard Model (SM) predicted rate for the NC Δ → Nγ process and for testing the interpretation of the previously observed MiniBooNE low energy excess as NC Δ → Nγ events, using the full anticipated MicroBooNE data set of 12.25 x 10 20 POT.

A Publicly Available, Annotated Dataset for Naturalistic Driving Study and Computer Vision Algorithm Development

Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed and implemented a data collection effort to create a dataset for use in evaluating and testing algorithms for analyzing driver behavior under controlled settings for support of the Federal Highway Administration’s Exploratory Advanced Research Program. This collection is called the ORNL Naturalistic Driving Study Sample (ONDSS). The dataset is designed to emulate aspects of the Second Strategic Highway Research Project (SHRP2), which contained a massive naturalistic driving study (NDS) with over 3000 drivers between 2010 and 2013 using their personal vehicles, with over 4300 person-years of data collected [HANKEY].

Release a public version of HERON (HERON 2.0) with improved algorithms for the treatment of energy storage

Integrated energy systems (IESs) are essential for decarbonizing electricity and industrial sectors and fully exploiting these systems requires sophisticated planning, scheduling, and dispatching tools to maximize their socio-economic benefits. The Holistic Energy Resource Optimization Network (HERON) is a generic software plugin for the Risk Analysis Virtual Environment (RAVEN) to perform stochastic technoeconomic analysis of IES with economic drivers. This report summarizes the updates made to HERON 2.0. Particularly, we demonstrate one of the added features, Function-based Control Mechanics, by comparing a price-based dispatch strategy with the original perfect foresight baselines. Our case studies successfully demonstrate that the model is capable to incorporate artificial control algorithm into the dispatch of IES components. In addition, our results from the price-based strategy indicate that the control strategies of IES components are key to the economic and temporal performance of our model; therefore, more sophisticated dispatch strategies are required to improve the model performance.

A publication proposal to the University of California

The purpose of this book is to profile, chapter by chapter, each of the 18 Nobel laureates who contributed to the laboratory’s wartime efforts. Through narrative, nonfiction profiles with fascinating historical photos and documents, readers will learn who these scientists were, what they accomplished, and why it mattered. The goal of this book is to educate readers by creating a published chronicle of this important history based on documents and photographs that are a part of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s National Security Research Center. These 18 scientists have two things in common: their wartime work at Los Alamos and their Nobel Prizes. For the first time ever, both are presented as one story.
