Mechanical properties of freestanding few-layer graphene/boron nitride/polymer heterostacks investigated with local and non-local techniques

van der Waals two-dimensional materials and heterostructures combined with polymer films continue to attract research attention to elucidate their functionality and potential applications. This study presents the fabrication and mechanical testing of 2D material heterostacks, consisting of few-layer boron nitride and graphene heterostructures synthesized via chemical vapor deposition, capped with a polymethyl methacrylate layer and suspended across ∼200 μm wide trenches using a combined wet–dry transfer method. The mechanical characterization of the heterostacks was performed using two independent approaches: (a) non-local testing with a custom-built tensile testing platform and (b) local load–displacement testing employing atomic force microscopy probes, complemented by finite element simulations. Both approaches provided new results, which are in good agreement with each other. Overall, our findings offer new insights into a combined load capacity in complex multi-material two-dimensional systems, and can contribute to advancing micro and nano-scale device designs and implementations.

Solution-based electrical doping of organic photovoltaics with non-fullerene acceptors facilitated by solvent vapor pre-treatment

Solution-based electrical doping of organic semiconductors using 12-molybdophosphoric acid (PMA) hydrate has been shown to allow p-type doping of conjugated polymers over a limited depth from the surface, enabling the fabrication of organic solar cells with a simplified device architecture. However, the doping level of certain conjugated polymers using PMA was found to be limited by the polymer film volume. Here, we report a modified PMA doping technique based on film volume expansion that is applicable to device fabrication, leading to hole-collecting layer-free non-fullerene organic photovoltaic devices, which exhibit a comparable photovoltaic performance to those with a commonly evaporated MoO3 hole-collecting layer.

Study of electron-induced chemical transformations in polymers

In extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photoresist exposure, the primary and secondary electrons drive chemistry rather than the EUV photons themselves. These electrons have a wide range of energies below approximately 80 eV, which are capable of complex network of reactions during exposure. To better understand the ability of electrons of different energies within the EUV primary and secondary electron range, we want to characterize and compare the chemistry induced in pure polymer films by direct exposure to electrons. Thin films of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate), poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(4-hydroxystyrene) were exposed to a 20 to 80 eV electron beam. Outgassing during exposure was characterized in-situ using a quadrupole residual gas analyzer. The thickness changes were measured using ellipsometry and chemical bond structure data were collected using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) after exposure to compare different exposure conditions. Poly(4-hydroxystyrene) demonstrated stability during electron exposures. Exposures of the other two materials led to outgassing of protecting groups, the intensity of which decayed in time. Outgassing, FTIR, and thickness loss data exhibited approximately linear relationships to each other.

Prolate and oblate chiral liquid crystal spheroids

Liquid crystals are known to exhibit intriguing textures and color patterns, with applications in display and optical technologies. This work focuses on chiral materials and examines the palette of morphologies that arises when microdroplets are deformed into nonspherical shapes in a controllable manner. Specifically, geometrical confinement and mechanical strain are used to manipulate orientational order, phase transitions, and topological defects that arise in chiral liquid crystal droplets. Inspired by processes encountered in nature, where insects and animals often rely on strain and temperature to alter the optical appearance of dispersed liquid crystalline elements, chiral droplets are dispersed in polymer films and deformation induced by uniaxial or biaxial stretching. Our measurements are interpreted by resorting to simulations of the corresponding systems, thereby providing an in-depth understanding of the morphologies that arise in these materials. The reported structures and assemblies offer potential for applications in smart coatings, smart fabrics, and wearable sensors.

A tandem radiative/evaporative cooler for weather-insensitive and high-performance daytime passive cooling

Radiative cooling and evaporative cooling with low carbon footprint are regarded as promising passive cooling strategies. However, the intrinsic limits of continuous water supply with complex systems for evaporative cooling, and restricted cooling power as well as the strict requirement of weather conditions for radiative cooling, hinder the scale of their practical applications. Here, we propose a tandem passive cooler composed of bilayer polymer that enables dual-functional passive cooling of radiation and evaporation. Specifically, the high reflectivity to sunlight and mid-infrared emissivity of this polymer film allows excellent radiative cooling performance, and its good atmospheric water harvesting property of underlayer ensures self-supply of water and high evaporative cooling power. Consequently, this tandem passive cooler overcomes the fundamental difficulties of radiative cooling and evaporative cooling and shows the applicability under various conditions of weather/climate. It is expected that this design can expand the practical application domain of passive cooling.

Spin-induced asymmetry reaction—The formation of asymmetric carbon by electropolymerization

We describe the spin polarization–induced chirogenic electropolymerization of achiral 2-vinylpyridine, which forms a layer of enantioenhanced isotactic polymer on the electrode. The product formed is enantioenriched in asymmetric carbon polymer. To confirm the chirality of the polymer film formed on the electrode, we also measured its electron spin polarization properties as a function of its thickness. Two methods were used: First, spin polarization was measured by applying magnetic contact atomic force microscopy, and second, magnetoresistance was assessed in a sandwich-like four-point contact structure. We observed high spin-selective electron transmission, even for a layer thickness of 120 nm. A correlation exists between the change in the circular dichroism signal and the change in the spin polarization, as a function of thickness. The spin-filtering efficiency increases with temperature.

Autonomous alignment and healing in multilayer soft electronics using immiscible dynamic polymers

Self-healing soft electronic and robotic devices can, like human skin, recover autonomously from damage. While current devices use a single type of dynamic polymer for all functional layers to ensure strong interlayer adhesion, this approach requires manual layer alignment. In this study, we used two dynamic polymers, which have immiscible backbones but identical dynamic bonds, to maintain interlayer adhesion while enabling autonomous realignment during healing. These dynamic polymers exhibit a weakly interpenetrating and adhesive interface, whose width is tunable. When multilayered polymer films are misaligned after damage, these structures autonomously realign during healing to minimize interfacial free energy. Finally, we fabricated devices with conductive, dielectric, and magnetic particles that functionally heal after damage, enabling thin-film pressure sensors, magnetically assembled soft robots, and underwater circuit assembly.

Multilayer Electrodes with Metalized Polymer Current Collector for High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries with Extreme-Fast-Charging Capability

The pursuit of batteries capable of extreme fast charging (XFC), that also satisfy high energy and safety criteria, poses a significant challenge to current lithium-ion battery technologies. Additionally, the increasing demand for aluminum (Al) and copper (Cu) in electrification, and vehicle lightweighting is driving these metals towards near-critical status in the medium term. This study introduced metalized polymer films by depositing an Al or Cu thin layer onto two sides of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film – named mPET/Al and mPET/Cu, as lightweight, cost-effective alternatives to traditional metal current collectors in LIBs.

Fixation of virgin lunar surface soil

Two systems are shown to be suitable for fixing loose particulate soils with a polymer film, without visually detectable disturbance of the soil particle spatial relationships. A two-component system is described, which uses a gas monomer condensible at the soil temperature and a gas phase catalyst acting to polymerize the monomer. A one-component system using a monomer which polymerizes spontaneously on and within the top few millimeters of the soil is also considered. The two-component system employs a simpler apparatus, but it operates over a narrower temperature range (approximately -40 to -10 C). Other two-component systems were identified which may operate at soil temperatures as high as +100 C, at relatively narrow temperature ranges of approximately 30 C. The one-component system was demonstrated to operate successfully with initial soil temperatures from -70 C or lower to +150 C.
