Discovering Physically Meaningful Structures from Climate Extreme Data

The original proposal described an interdisciplinary team spanning UC San Diego (lead), Columbia University, and UC Irvine, with Columbia investigators including Pierre Gentine, Elias Bareinboim, and Marcus van Lier-Walqui. The proposal further specified a leadership structure in which Columbia co-investigators contributed across the three aims, with Co-PI Gentine serving as a point of contact with science teams and with responsibilities distributed across aims.

The NASA role in major areas of human concern: Transportation

After introducing some of the general factors that have affected progress in the transportation area, NASA program elements are examined to illustrate relevant points of contact. Interpretive steps are taken throughout the statement to show a few of the more important ways people's lives have been affected as a result of the work of NASA and other organizations functioning in this area. The principal documents used and interviews conducted are identified after the conclusion of this statement. This statement, it should be noted, is incomplete in many respects, primarily because it reflects only a small number of the technical, economic, and social forces affecting American life. Taken as a summary statement, however, it hopefully will provide a useful basis for better understanding NASA's role in the national attempt to upgrade the quality of transportation services.

Directory of aerospace safety specialized information sources

A directory is presented to make available to the aerospace safety community a handbook of organizations and experts in specific, well-defined areas of safety technology. It is designed for the safety specialist as an aid for locating both information sources and individual points of contact (experts) in engineering related fields. The file covers sources of data in aerospace design, tests, as well as information in hazard and failure cause identification, accident analysis, materials characteristics, and other related subject areas. These 171 organizations and their staff members, hopefully, should provide technical information in the form of documentation, data and consulting expertise. These will be sources that have assembled and collated their information, so that it will be useful in the solution of engineering problems. One of the goals of the project in the United States that have and are willing to share data of value to the aerospace safety community.

Rigid format alter packets for the analysis of electromagnetic field problems

The computer program NASTRAN is used to solve electromagnetic field problems. The diffusion equation and the boundary conditions valid for problems of these kinds together with a replacing potential energy function are given. The extent to which an analogy with finite element displacement and temperature approaches holds is indicated. The outputting of complex quantities is made possible after adjustment of standard rigid format 1 input data blocks to module SDR2. The applications made involve the study of the proximity effect in a system of three parallel conductors and the analysis of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the points of contact in circuit breakers.

Relationships between the curvatures of tooth surfaces in three-dimensional gear systems

A three-dimensional gear system between crossing and intersecting axes is considered under the assumption that the first derivative of the transmission ratio is zero in the vicinity of the point of contact. The following are obtained; (1) an equation that relates the normal curvatures of the tooth surfaces in the section that passes through the vector of relative velocity; (2) a relation between the principal curvatures and principal directions of the two tooth surfaces; and (3) new formulas for determining the reduced curvatures of the surfaces.

Composite seal for turbomachinery

A gas path seal suitable for use with a turbine engine or compressor is provided. A shroud wearable or abradable by the abrasion of the rotor blades of the turbine or compressor protects the rotor blades. A compliant backing surrounds the shroud. The backing may be made of corrugated sheets or the like with adjacent layers having off-set corrugations, with axes of the folds parallel to the rotor axis. The sheets may be bonded together at points of contact by brazing, welding or the like. In another embodiment a compliant material is covered with a thin ductile layer. A mounting fixture surrounds the backing.

Analytic theory of orbit contraction and ballistic entry into planetary atmospheres

A space object traveling through an atmosphere is governed by two forces: aerodynamic and gravitational. On this premise, equations of motion are derived to provide a set of universal entry equations applicable to all regimes of atmospheric flight from orbital motion under the dissipate force of drag through the dynamic phase of reentry, and finally to the point of contact with the planetary surface. Rigorous mathematical techniques such as averaging, Poincare's method of small parameters, and Lagrange's expansion, applied to obtain a highly accurate, purely analytic theory for orbit contraction and ballistic entry into planetary atmospheres. The theory has a wide range of applications to modern problems including orbit decay of artificial satellites, atmospheric capture of planetary probes, atmospheric grazing, and ballistic reentry of manned and unmanned space vehicles.

A multi-purpose method for analysis of spur gear tooth loading

A large digitized approach was developed for the static and dynamic load analysis of spur gearing. An iterative procedure was used to calculate directly the "variable-variable" gear mesh stiffness as a function of transmitted load, gear tooth profile errors, gear tooth deflections and gear hub torsional deformation, and position of contacting profile points. The developed approach can be used to analyze the loads, Hertz stresses, and PV for the normal and high contrast ratio gearing, presently the modeling is limited to the condition that for a given gear all teeth have identical spacing and profiles (with or without surface imperfections). Certain types of simulated sinusoidal profile errors and pitting can cause interruptions of the gear mesh stiffness function and, thus, increase the dynamic loads in spur gearing. In addition, a finite element stress and mesh subprogram was developed for future introduction into the main program for calculating the gear tooth bending stresses under dynamic loads.

Design and use of multiple blade slurry sawing in a production atmosphere

The technique and uses of the multiple blade slurry (MBS) saw are considered. Multiple bands of steel are arranged in a frame and the frame is reciprocated with the steel bands to a workpiece, while simultaneously applying abrasive at the point of contact. The blades wear slots in the workpiece and progress through the piece resulting in several parts of wafers. The transition to MBA from diamond slicing is justified by savings resulting from minimized kerf losses, minimized subsurface damage, and improved surface quality off the saw. This allows wafering much closer to finished thickness specifications. The current state of the art MBS technology must be significantly improved if the low cost solar array (LSA) goals are to be attained. It is concluded that although MBS will never be the answer to every wafering requirement, the economical production of wafers to LSA project specifications will be achieved.

An intersection algorithm for moving parts

The problem of deciding whether moving mechanical parts will collide during motion arises frequently in computer-aided design of machinery and in robotics. In machinery design, the problem becomes acute when there are various complex curved mechanical parts that will follow planned trajectories. There is a need to know at an early stage in the design process whether there will be collisions between parts necessitating changes in part shapes, trajectories, or in the overall design. This paper describes a collision detection algorithm that is guaranteed to detect a collision if one will occur, and it also computes the earliest point of contact.

Generation-V dual-Purkinje-image eyetracker

Major advances characterize the Generation-V dual-Purkinje-image eyetracker compared with the Generation-III version previously described. These advances include a large reduction in size, major improvements in frequency response and noise level, automatic alignment to a subject, and automatic adjustment for different separation between the visual and optic axes, which can vary considerably from subject to subject. In a number of applications described in the paper, the eyetracker is coupled with other highly specialized optical devices. These applications include accurately stabilizing an image on a subject's retina; accurately simulating a visually dead retinal region (i.e., a scotoma) of arbitrary shape, size, and position; and, for clinical purposes, stabilizing the position of a laser coagulator beam on a patient's retina so that the point of contact is unaffected by the patient's own eye movements.

Science operations management

The operation teams engaged in the IR Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) project included scientists from the IRAS International Science Team. The detailed involvement of these scientists in the design, testing, validation, and operations phases of the IRAS mission contributed to the success of this project. The Project Management Group spent a substantial amount of time discussing science-related issues, because science team coleaders were members from the outset. A single scientific point-of-contact for the Management Group enhanced the depth and continuity of agreement reached in decision-making.
