Mechanical Properties of Additively Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel Before and After Neutron Irradiation–FY23

This report presents the observed mechanical behavior of the additively manufactured (AM) 316L stainless steel (SS) before and after neutron irradiation. In the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) program, a variety of mechanical and physical property data are generated and accumulated to assess the AM austenitic alloy for nuclear reactor applications. The testing and evaluation task in the FY 2023 focused on elucidating the effects of sampling location and build size on the mechanical properties of AM 316L SS (in stress-relieved condition) before and after neutron irradiation. The laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process produced 316L plates of three distinct sizes from which SS-J3 miniature tensile specimens were machined from six different locations. The tensile specimens were irradiated in the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) normally to 2 and 10 dpa at the target temperatures of 300 °C and 600 °C. Post-irradiation tensile testing was performed at room temperature, 300 °C, and 600 °C. The mechanical properties of AM 316L SS were significantly influenced by the characteristic microstructures of printed materials, which include fine grains and high-density dislocations. Compared with the traditional 316L SS, AM 316L showed higher initial strength and lower ductility. Regardless of sampling location, the AM 316L steel retained relatively high strength and ductility to the highest irradiation dose. A prompt necking at yield (with little uniform ductility) was observed after irradiation at 300 °C but no embrittlement was observed up to 10 dpa. Ductilization by irradiation–the radiation-induced increase of ductility–was observed for the 600 °C irradiation only and it occurred in low dose range only. The neutron irradiation increased the data variation in many tensile property datasets, particularly after 600 °C irradiation, and no clear dependence of tensile properties on build thickness or sampling location was observed.

Deuterium transport and retention properties of representative fusion blanket structural materials

Reduced activation ferritic-martensitic (RAFM) steels have been developed for decades for use as fusion blanket structural materials, and have advantages in both mechanical properties and irradiation resistance following careful engineering of the microstructure. However, the hydrogen isotope behavior in these proposed fusion structural materials is not well understood, but is important to assess since it impacts the fusion reactor safety and self-sufficient tritium fuel cycle. Here, we investigated deuterium transport and retention in representative advanced RAFM steels, including castable nanostructured alloys (CNAs), and oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) steels. A gas-driven permeation (GDP) system was used to measure the permeability, diffusivity and solubility of the studied materials, covering the temperature range from 623 K to 873 K, and the loading pressures from 1.8 x 10 4 to 1.0 x 10 5 Pa. The results indicated that the deuterium permeability has little material dependence. In contrast, the deuterium diffusivity of the studied materials showed significant variation. The deuterium diffusivity in ODS steels is one order of magnitude lower than that in RAFM steels and CNAs, and correspondingly, have an effective solubility that is 2–10 times larger than RAFM steels and CNAs. In addition, thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) measurements were performed to assess the deuterium retention and desorption of these materials following a static thermal deuterium charging at 723 Kfor 1 hour under the deuterium pressure of 1.0 x 10 5 Pa. It was found that ODS steels exhibit the highest deuterium retention and have broader desorption peaks. Microstructural features contributing to deuterium retention and impacting deuterium transport are discussed to rationalize the observed deuterium behavior in the studied RAFM steels.

Engineering the Interlayer Spacing by Pre-Intercalation for High Performance Supercapacitor MXene Electrodes in Room Temperature Ionic Liquid

MXenes exhibit excellent capacitance at high scan rates in sulfuric acid aqueous electrolytes, but the narrow potential window of aqueous electrolytes limits the energy density. Organic electrolytes and room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) can provide higher potential windows, leading to higher energy density. The large cation size of RTIL hinders its intercalation in-between the layers of MXene limiting the specific capacitance in comparison to aqueous electrolytes. In this work, different chain lengths alkylammonium (AA) cations are intercalated into Ti 3 C 2 T x , producing variation of MXene interlayer spacings (d-spacing). AA-cation-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x (AA-Ti 3 C 2 ), exhibits higher specific capacitances, and cycling stabilities than pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x in 1 m 1-ethly-3-methylimidazolium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide (EMIMTFSI) in acetonitrile and neat EMIMTFSI RTIL electrolytes. Pre-intercalated MXene with an interlayer spacing of ≈2.2 nm, can deliver a large specific capacitance of 257 F g –1 (1428 mF cm –2 and 492 F cm –3 ) in neat EMIMTFSI electrolyte leading to high energy density. Quasi elastic neutron scattering and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to study the dynamics of confined RTIL in pre-intercalated MXene. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations suggest significant differences in the structures of RTIL ions and AA cations inside the Ti 3 C 2 T x interlayer, providing insights into the differences in the observed electrochemical behavior.

Broadband Asymmetric Transmission of Linearly Polarized Mid‐Infrared Light Based on Quasi‐3D Metamaterials

Abstract Metamaterials consisting of subwavelength resonators offer an exciting opportunity for realizing asymmetric transmission (AT) of linearly polarized light. However, to date, only moderate/narrow‐band AT responses have been obtained in metadevices based on stacked planar nanostructures. Here, leveraging a combination of a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization method and a membrane projection lithography (MPL) fabrication approach, a quasi‐3D metamaterial for broadband AT of linearly polarized mid‐infrared light is demonstrated. Facilitated by the customized GA, an efficient exploration of 3D plasmonic meta‐atoms with broken mirror symmetry in the light propagation direction allows the satisfaction of the rigorous conditions for AT of linearly polarized waves over a broad wavelength range. Confirmed by surface current analysis, the observed AT behavior is attributed to the resonant coupling between the plasmonic nanostructures located on the two orthogonal walls of the MPL cavities. Incorporating an advanced inverse‐design method and a state‐of‐art fabrication technique, the methodology used in the present study provides a promising route for exploiting 3D metamaterials with sophisticated functionalities via effectively exploring the high‐dimensional parametric space offered by true 3D meta‐atoms.

Tetragonal Kondo Insulator EuCd 2 Sb 2 Discovered via High Pressure High Temperature Synthesis

Abstract Magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials heavily rely on the crystal structure even in the same chemical compositions. In this study, it is demonstrated that a layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 structure can be obtained by treating bulk trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (600 °C). Magnetization measurements of the newly formed layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 confirm an antiferromagnetic ordering with Neel temperature ( T N ) around 16 K, which is significantly higher than that ( T N ≈ 7 K) of trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 , consistent with heat capacity measurements. Moreover, bad metal behavior is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the resistivity shows a dramatic increase around the Neel temperature. Electronic structure calculations with local density approximation dynamic mean–field theory (LDA+DMFT) show that this material is strongly correlated with well‐formed large magnetic moments, due to Hund's coupling, which is known to dramatically suppress the Kondo scale.

Multiple Twinning in Nacre and Aragonite

Twinning occurs when two crystals share a coherent interface along which their lattices are mirror symmetric. Here, twinning is investigated in biogenic and geologic aragonite (CaCO 3 ) in columnar nacre from the red abalone Haliotis rufescens, sheet nacre from the black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, and geologic aragonite. All samples exhibit the expected single (110) twins, characterized by a 116.2° rotation of the aragonite a-axis. Surprisingly, multiple twins—double, triple, quadruple—are also observed, each involving successive 116.2° rotations of the a-axis around the c-axis. Multiple twinning is concomitant but distinct from the well-known cyclic twinning of aragonite. Multiple twinning is most prevalent in columnar nacre, reaching up to quadruple twins, most frequently occurring between nacre tablets in the same column, whereas sheet nacre and geologic aragonite exhibit up to triple twins. The frequency of twins decreases with increasing twin multiple, consistent with a physical rather than biological origin. This interpretation is supported by observations in geologic aragonite and by simulations of columnar nacre growth, which incorporate only nucleation rate, growth rate, and basic geometric constraints, yet they reproduce the observed twinning behavior in columnar nacre, reinforcing the conclusion that multiple twinning arises from physical growth mechanisms.

Multimorphic Materials: Spatially Tailoring Mechanical Properties via Selective Initiation of Interpenetrating Polymer Networks

Access to multimaterial polymers with spatially localized properties and robust interfaces is anticipated to enable new capabilities in soft robotics, such as smooth actuation for advanced medical and manufacturing technologies. Here, orthogonal initiation is used to create interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) with spatial control over morphology and mechanical properties. Base catalyzes the formation of a stiff and strong polyurethane, while blue LEDs initiate the formation of a soft and elastic polyacrylate. IPN morphology is controlled by when the LED is turned “on”, with large phase separation occurring for short time delays (≈1–2 min) and a mixed morphology for longer time delays (>5 min), which is supported by dynamic mechanical analysis, small angle X-ray scattering, and atomic force microscopy. Through tailoring morphology, tensile moduli and fracture toughness can be tuned across ≈1–2 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, a simple spring model is used to explain the observed mechanical behavior. Photopatterning produces “multimorphic” materials, where morphology is spatially localized with fine precision (<100 µm), while maintaining a uniform chemical composition throughout to mitigate interfacial failure. As a final demonstration, the fabrication of hinges represents a possible use case for multimorphic materials in soft robotics.

Suppressed Lone Pair Electrons Explain Unconventional Rise of Lattice Thermal Conductivity in Defective Crystalline Solids

Manipulating thermal properties of materials can be interpreted as the control of how vibrations of atoms (known as phonons) scatter in a crystal lattice. Compared to a perfect crystal, crystalline solids with defects are expected to have shorter phonon mean free paths caused by point defect scattering, leading to lower lattice thermal conductivities than those without defects. While this is true in many cases, alloying can increase the phonon mean free path in the Cd-doped AgSnSbSe 3 system to increase the lattice thermal conductivity from 0.65 to 1.05 W m –1 K –1 by replacing 18% of the Sb sites with Cd. It is found that the presence of lone pair electrons leads to the off-centering of cations from the centrosymmetric position of a cubic lattice. X-ray pair distribution function analysis reveals that this structural distortion is relieved when the electronic configuration of the dopant element cannot produce lone pair electrons. Furthermore, a decrease in the Grüneisen parameter with doping is experimentally confirmed, establishing a relationship between the stereochemical activity of lone pair electrons and the lattice anharmonicity. The observed “harmonic” behavior with doping suggests that lone pair electrons must be preserved to effectively suppress phonon transport in these systems.

Surfactant-Induced Interfacial Aggregation of Porphyrins for Structuring Color-Tunable Liquids

Locking nonequilibrium shapes of liquids into targeted architectures by interfacial jamming of nanoparticles is an emerging area in material science. 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (H 6 TPPS) shows three different aggregation states that present an absorption imaging platform to monitor the assembly and jamming of supramolecular polymer surfactants (SPSs) at the liquid/liquid interface. The interfacial interconversion of H 6 TPPS, specifically H 4 TPPS 2- dissolved in water, from J- to an H-aggregation was induced by strong electrostatic interactions with amine-terminated polystyrene dissolved in toluene at the water/toluene interface. We find that this resulted in color-tunable liquids due to interfacial jamming of the SPSs formed between H 4 TPPS 2- and amine-terminated polystyrene. However, the formed SPSs cannot lock in nonequilibrium shapes of liquids. In addition, a self-wrinkling behavior was observed when amphiphilic triblock copolymers of PS-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) were used to interact with H 4 TPPS 2- . Subsequently, the SPSs formed can lock in nonequilibrium shapes of liquids.

An SECM-Based Spot Analysis for Redoxmer-Electrode Kinetics: Identifying Redox Asymmetries on Model Graphitic Carbon Interfaces

The fundamental process in non-aqueous redox flow battery (NRFB) operation revolves around electron transfer (ET) between a current collector electrode and redox-active organic molecules (redoxmers) in solution. Here, we present an approach utilizing scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to evaluate interfacial ET kinetics between redoxmers and various electrode materials of interest at desired locations. This spot-analysis method relies on the measurement of heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k f or k b ) as a function of applied potential (E-E 0 '). As demonstrated by COMSOL simulations, this method enables the quantification of Butler-Volmer kinetic parameters, the standard heterogeneous rate constant, k 0 , and the transfer coefficient, α. Our method enabled the identification of inherent asymmetries in the ET kinetics arising during the reduction of ferrocene-based redoxmers, compared to their oxidation which displayed faster rate constants. Similar behavior was observed on a wide variety of carbon electrodes such as multi-layer graphene, highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, glassy carbon, and chemical vapor deposition-grown graphite films. However, aqueous systems and Pt do not exhibit such kinetic effects. Our analysis suggests that differential adsorption of the redoxmers is insufficient to account for our observations. Displaying a greater versatility than conventional electroanalytical methods, we demonstrate the operation of our spot analysis at concentrations up to 100 mM of redoxmer over graphite films. Looking forward, our method can be used to assess non-idealities in a variety of redoxmer/electrode/solvent systems with quantitative evaluation of kinetics for applications in redox-flow battery research.

Exploring Material Solutions for Supercritical CO 2 Applications above 800 °C

There has been recent interest in exploring revolutionary supercritical CO 2 (sCO 2 ) power cycles, and this exploratory investigation was seeking materials with CO 2 compatibility at up to 1200 °C. Here, initial exposures were conducted at 0.1 and 2 MPa CO 2 for up to 1000 h at 900–1200 °C. As expected, specimens of Mo and W that might be used as matrix materials in cermets were rapidly attacked under these conditions. Even an alumina-forming FeCrAlMo alloy showed high mass gains in less than 100 h at 1200 °C due to the formation of Fe-rich oxide. However, at 900–1100 °C, more protective behavior was observed for FeCrAlMo specimens, with or without pre-oxidation, in 0.1 MPa CO 2 , but increased attack was observed in 2 MPa CO 2 . In contrast, most Ni-based alloys exposed at 900–1100 °C showed higher mass gains and thicker reaction products than formed in air. Thus, Ni-based alloys appear less compatible with CO 2 environments above 800 °C compared to lower temperatures. Low mass gains were observed for CVD SiC at 900–1200 °C, but MoSi 2 and Mo(Si,Al) 2 specimens did not form protective scales under these conditions at 1000 and 1100 °C.

A Coupled Small and Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering Study of Phase Transformation Mechanisms in U-6Wt Pct Nb

The elevated temperature phase transformation kinetics of U-6wt%Nb in both wrought and cast conditions were investigated using in-situ high energy synchrotron X-ray scattering. The evolution of the phase content, γ-phase composition, and microstructure morphology was determined through the analysis of simultaneously collected wide-angle diffraction and small-angle scattering (SAXS) data. The results of the wide-angle scattering analysis, especially the phase fractions and average composition of the γ-phase, provide model parameters to enable a quantitative analysis using the SAXS data. Greater clarity regarding the kinetics of different precipitation mechanisms, namely the continuous precipitation (CP) of α-U within the γ-phase matrix and the discontinuous (DP) grain boundary precipitation of a lamellar microstructure, consisting of α-U and Nb-rich γ-phase are obtained from the coupled measurement modes. These results indicate that the CP mechanism is responsible for the initial precipitation of α-U at all temperatures considered. Near the nose in the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram at ~798 K, both mechanisms are active during the early stages of phase transformation. However, the DP mechanism has an increasingly long incubation period with decreasing temperature below the TTT nose. In conclusion, the average interlamellar spacing obtained from the SAXS analysis increases with time, providing further evidence of the so-called divergent DP behavior previously observed in U-6wt%Nb alloys.

This motivates a close coupling between autonomous research platforms and scientific machine learning methodology that blends mechanistic physical models and black box machine learning models. Lastly, we reflect on our early efforts in on-demand alloy deposition, highlighting some of the challenges. This emerging research area presents new opportunities to accelerate materials synthesis, evaluation, and hence discovery and design.

Ink-based laser powder bed fusion of barium titanate

Barium titanate (BTO) is a lead-free functional ceramic that is widely used in sensors, transducers, and actuators. The increasing demand for complex geometries and quick design iterations motivates the use of additive manufacturing techniques. Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing technique enables the net-shape or near-net-shape fabrication of metals and alloys. Ceramic L-PBF remains challenging due to their high melting temperature. Here, to address this challenge, a nanoparticle ink feedstock was incorporated into the L-PBF process to allow low power melting of BTO. Key print parameters (i.e. laser power, scanning speed, and hatching spacing) were optimized to fabricate millimeter-scale BTO parts. The printed BTO samples possessed an inhomogeneous equiaxed-columnar-cellular microstructure. Semiconducting current-voltage behavior was observed in as-printed samples, which was attributed to the creation of oxygen vacancies. The piezoelectric d 33 coefficient was measured to be 4.6 pC/N.

Dietary uptake of geosmin in rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss )

Geosmin is a primary source of muddy/earthy ‘off-flavors’ in farmed fish, which may render their organoleptic quality unacceptable to consumers. Model systems of geosmin uptake typically comprise exposure to waterborne geosmin that is absorbed via the gills. The present research demonstrates dietary exposure as an alternative route of geosmin uptake in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fillets. Trout (average initial weight of 355 g) were stocked in quadruplicate compartmentalized raceways (N = 4 compartments per treatment, n = 50 fish per compartment) supplied with first-use, flow-through water (4.5 complete turnovers per hour). Fish were fed diets containing 0 (control dose), 0.005 (low dose), 0.05 (medium dose), or 0.5 (high dose) mg geosmin/kg feed at 1% body weight/day for four weeks. Fillets (12 fillets/diet/week plus 12 pre-trial fillet samples) and weekly feed and water samples were analyzed via GC–MS to determine geosmin concentrations. Feeding behavior was documented daily according to a four-point scale. ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey tests and polynomial contrast, regression, correlation, and chi-squared statistical analyses were applied to data (α = 0.05 significance level). Palatability of feed did not hinder consumption of the geosmin-spiked feeds: although fish responded positively to all feeds, the most aggressive feeding behavior was observed among those fed medium and high dose feed. Geosmin was effectively imparted into fillets after one week, and no significant temporal effect was found after four weeks. Mean geosmin concentrations significantly increased in fillets from low (mean of 26 ng/kg geosmin) to medium (202 ng/kg) to high (441 ng/kg) dose feed groups during the trial. Polynomial contrasts and regression modeling validated this significant positive effect of dose on geosmin uptake, with an estimated 166 ng/kg rise in fillet-geosmin for every log 10 increase in feed concentration. Waterborne geosmin levels immediately post-feeding were conditionally independent of concentrations in feed and fillets, therefore dietary uptake was affirmed as the predominant mechanism of absorption in the present experimental system. Finally, based on these findings, geosmin-spiked feeds may be used to induce predictable, repeatable levels of this off-flavor compound in fillets and serve as a model system for further investigation of sensory quality and off-flavor mitigation strategies for farm-raised fish.

Programmable hydrogels by combining persistent and transient dynamic bonds

Out-of-equilibrium chemistry is currently being applied to polymer systems to mimic the autonomous behavior of biological materials. In this study, hydrogels with self-healing properties were developed that combine persistent crosslinks from dynamic metal-ligand coordination with transient crosslinks from dynamic anhydride bonds. Polymers containing terpyridine ligands and carboxylic acid groups were synthesized and crosslinked with divalent metal ions (Fe 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cu 2+ ). The coordination bonds from terpyridine–metal coordination impart persistent stability, while transient anhydrides formed on treatment with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) temporarily increase crosslink density. Distinct behaviors are observed depending on the choice of metal, with Ni 2+ forming robust, stable networks; Zn 2+ creating moderately dynamic gels; and Cu 2+ yielding highly dynamic, soft materials. Treatment with EDC increased storage moduli significantly, with transient effects lasting up to 280 min depending on the metal ion. Self-healing experiments demonstrated independent contributions from metal coordination and transient anhydrides, enabling recovery of stress and strain under varying conditions. Additionally, complex and reversible 2D stiffness patterns were generated by spatially controlled EDC treatment of Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ hydrogel films, demonstrating programmability and reusability.

Impact of cobalt doping on structural and magnetic properties of zinc oxide nanocomposites synthesized by mechanical ball-milling method

A series of zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductor nanocomposite samples doped with different concentrations of cobalt (Co) were successfully synthesized via simple and highly effective mechanical ball-milling method using suitable precursors. All doped nanocomposites crystallized in hexagonal wurtzite formation of ZnO. No alteration in the wurtzite structure, with no evidence of any segregated secondary phase(s) was detected with increasing doping concentrations. This result unambiguously verified the substitution of Zn 2+ sites by Co 2+ ions in the ZnO host lattice for different doping concentrations. Moreover, room temperature ferromagnetic behavior was observed in all doped nanocomposite samples in the reported work. Present study clearly shows that mechanical ball-milling is a facile, inexpensive, eco-friendly method to synthesize crystalline and magnetic Co doped ZnO nanocomposites for next generation spin-based devices.

Nanostructural and rheological transitions of pH-responsive supramolecular systems involving a zwitterionic amphiphile and a triamine

Supramolecular aqueous complexes of a synthesized zwitterionic surfactant, 2-(dimethyl(octadecyl)ammonio)acetate (stearyl betaine) and diethylenetriamine, have been found to display pH-tunable rheological properties without the need for a co-surfactant. For this supramolecular system, the dynamically changing interplay among the constituents is responsible for the rich phase behavior including hollow nanotubules, bilayers, and vesicles. A further hypothesis is that hollow nanotubular structure is highly desirable for achieving chain entanglement geometries with reduced mesh size. The rheological properties of the suspension were measured using a rotational rheometer. An analysis using zero-shear viscosities at various temperatures as well as differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) helped shed light on thermodynamic and phase transitions taking place. The morphology of the suspension was analyzed by using a combination of small angle x-ray scattering(SAXS) and atomic force microscopy(AFM). Large steady-shear viscosities (up to ~160 Pa.s) and viscoelastic behavior was observed in acidic conditions which diminished upon increasing the pH. A novel analysis consisting of measured thermodynamic quantities such as activation energy(E a ) and enthalpy of transition(ΔH T ) further allude to the rich pH-sensitive nanoarchitecture of the system. Rather than commonly observed wormlike micelles, hollow nanotubules, as long as 1.6 µm were observed at pH 4 which disintegrated to bilayer sheets and vesicles upon increasing pH. Finally, gaining a comprehensive understanding from all the results, a transition mechanism between different suspension architectures was proposed.
