This presentation was given at the U.S. Wind Data Collection Coordination and Standardization Meeting on November 8, 2019.
REopt Lite can be accessed via the web tool, application programming interface (API), or open source code. The open source code allows users to add custom features and capabilities.
In 2017, the city of Kingston, New York, committed to meet 100% power consumption with renewableenergy sources by 2050. Leading by example, Kingston hadalready made significant strides in energy efficiency in citybuildings; however, meeting the new, ambitious goal meantthat maintaining energy and housing affordability would be achallenge. The poorest residents of the city face a significantenergy burden, spending up to a quarter of income on powerand heating bills.
SwitchGlaze is a technology offering fully transparent, infrared-light-absorbing designs with high solar efficiency. Relying on a thin coating of a perovskite material, SwitchGlaze transforms from transparent to tinted in response to heat, generating energy while also potentially lowering summertime indoor cooling costs.
This is a very brief description of the State and Local Planning for Energy (SLOPE) platform and State and Local Energy Profiles datasets to be included in the Tools issue of the Colorado chapter of the American Planning Association newsletter.
In this presentation, Davinia Salvachua shares her experience as a user of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility, to study the aromatic catabolic pathways in white-rot fungi. The presentation includes an overview of the research project, benefits of collaborating with EMSL, and tips for a successful EMSL proposal.
This talk provides an overview of the FY22 allocation process for obtaining computing time on the Eagle supercomputer. The overall process is outlined, with specific instructions on completing the request.
Electrification of end-use technologies could have important implications for bulk power sector planning, operations, and impacts. By combining previously-defined electrification scenarios with capacity expansion modeling, we evaluate the potential challenges and opportunities associated with electrification. Our scenario analysis reveals that electrification reduces energy consumption and air emissions from across the energy sector, and its impacts on energy system costs are modest due, in part, to the abundance of low-cost resources in the United States.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is leading the liquid (molten salt) power tower pathway for the U.S. Department of Energy's concentrating solar power Gen3 initiative. The Gen3 liquid pathway required updated designs to three major components: the tower and receiver, the thermal energy storage (TES) tanks, and the power cycle. We assume a 100 MWe net system output and used the System Advisor Model (SAM) to complete a technoeconomic cost analysis of the Gen3 liquid pathway design and estimate its LCOE. This paper summarizes the methodology and results of that analysis.
Hydropower accounts for about 37% of U.S. renewable electricity generation. But before industry members can license and construct new projects or relicense existing projects, they must navigate complex approvals from federal, state, and tribal authorities. These regulations provide critical protections for water quality, species, cultural resources, and recreation, but they can also increase the costs, risks, and uncertainties to license or relicense projects.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) enables modeling, analysis, and visualization of phenomena that would usually be impossible or extremely expensive to measure experimentally.
IEC 62788-7-3 was published on February 22, 2022. This presentation will discuss and try to understand how and why the methods became prescribed, and gather feedback on abrasives and characterization used with abrasion tests. The presentation will also cover the methods of linear brush test, rotary brush test, falling sand test, and forced sand impingement test.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has developed a deacetylation and mechanical refining (DMR) process that combines low-severity chemical pretreatment and mechanical refining to sidestep the expenses and challenges of traditional pretreatments, such as hydrothermal and dilute acid technologies. The DMR process is an important step in turning agricultural waste to sustainable aviation fuel.
Panel presentation providing an overview of the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF). Provided examples of thermal and power testing of computer components. Showcased the ESIF data center and testing capabilities for computer equipment at scale.
Today's water supply is built on a 20th century model of fresh water sources, centralized treatment, and wastewater discharge. But that model - especially in remote coastal communities or in disaster relief scenarios - is quickly becoming unsustainable. That's why researchers are looking to non-traditional water sources and new desalination technologies to provide our nation's industries and communities with a resilient, cost-effective water supply for the 21st century.
Transform utility electric distribution management systems to enable the integration and management of all assets and functions across the utility enterprise regardless of vendor or technology. Four program areas: Platform: Develop an open-source platform; evaluate advanced applications. Test bed: Build a vendor-neutral test bed to evaluate existing and future advanced distribution management system (ADMS) functionalities in a realistic setting. Applications: Develop an initial suite of ADMS applications. Advanced control: Develop new integrated optimization and control solutions.
Circular Economy (CE) aims at decoupling human activities from economic growth and resource use. While CE economic and environmental benefits are often touted by its proponents, increased circularity and improved sustainability do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. The Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization (CELAVI) framework simulates the transition of renewable energy technology supply chains towards circularity and quantifies spatially explicit environmental impacts and supply chain costs. Using wind blade end-of-life (EOL) management as a case study, this presentation will highlight CELAVI's features. Furthermore, envisioned extension to the framework could improve the stakeholder decision model by accounting for logistical and other factors. The CELAVI framework could be leveraged to answer crucial questions regarding renewables EOL management.
