Preliminary Results of a Multi-Sensor Data Science System for Monitoring a Solvent Extraction Process

Idaho National Laboratory is building a test bed to allow researchers the opportunity to study nuclear fuel processing operations. This includes studying the solvent extraction process and the use of centrifugal contactors. The goal of this project is to develop a system that utilizes non-traditional measurement sources such as vibration, acoustics, current, color, flow, and temperature in conjunction with data-based, machine learning techniques that will allow for signal discovery. This multi-sensor data supports the development of safeguards by design, provides operator process awareness, and aids in the discovery of process anomalies. This paper highlights some of the preliminary results from initial data collection campaigns and shares some of the lessons learned.

Inferring UAV Position Relative to Smartphone Sensor Based on Acoustic Characteristics

As commercial and non-commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) improve technologically and increase in accessibility, their potential for use in actions antithetical to nuclear non-proliferation efforts increases as well. The ability to identify and locate UAVs using ubiquitous, inexpensive hardware and software would be advantageous as both a deterrent and an initial warning system. Our team looks to utilize smartphones as acoustic sensors to record and characterize UAV movement based on the sound produced while in flight. Multi-rotor UAVs produce identifiable acoustic spectral characteristics with frequencies and harmonics corresponding to motor revolutions per minute and the propeller characteristics. As the source moves closer to the receiver these spectral patterns remain relatively stable (at slow speeds), while the energy observed from the waves increases. The goal of this work is to utilize a small network of smartphone sensors with known, fixed positions to infer the relative position of an in-flight UAV with respect to the position of the smartphones through the variation in acoustic energy.

Automated Vehicle Detection in a Nuclear Facility Using Low-Frequency Acoustic Sensors

This article presents an analysis of the method of construction and results for a classifier intended to identify vehicles using low-frequency acoustic data collected by a dis-tributed sensor network. This data is collected as part of a venture intended to explore data analytics and multisensor fusion techniques for the monitoring of activities at a test bed nuclear facility located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We describe the associated target signature and design a classifier based on a multilayer perceptron, followed by an analysis of its results. We discuss how overall accuracy is not the only consideration in constructing this classifier, and how for this application, it is actually desirable to operate at a lower level of accuracy in exchange for a reduction in the false alarm rate, as well as how this relates to the actual deployment of the classifier in practical use.
