DFT-Based Calculation of Molecular Hyperpolarizability and SFG Intensity of Symmetric and Asymmetric Stretch Modes of Alkyl Groups

Vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy has been extensively used for obtaining structural information of molecular functional groups at two-dimensional (2D) interfaces buried in the gas or liquid medium. Although the SFG experiment can be done elegantly, interpreting the measured intensity in terms of molecular orientation with respect to the lab coordinate is quite complicated. One of the main reasons is the difficulty of determining the hyperpolarizability tensors of even simple molecules that govern their SFG responses. The single-bond polarizability derivative (SBPD) model has been proposed to estimate the relative magnitude of SFG-active hyperpolarizability by assuming that the perturbation associated to each vibration is negligible. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the polarizability and dipole derivative tensors of the CH 3 stretch mode of CH 3 I, CH 3 CH 2 I, CH 3 OH, CH 3 CH 2 OH. Then, the hyperpolarizability tensors of symmetric and asymmetric vibration modes were calculated considering the Boltzmann distribution of representative conformers, which allowed theoretical calculation of their SFG intensities at all polarization combinations as a function of the tilt angle of the CH 3 group with respect to the surface normal direction. Then the ratios of the calculated SFG intensities for the CH 3 peaks used in experimental studies for the CH 3 tilt angle determination were compared. This comparison clearly showed the effect of vibrational coupling among neighboring functional groups. As a result, this study presents new parameters that can be used in determining the average tilt angle of the CH 3 group at the 2D interface with SFG measurements as well as limitations of the method.

Magnetic Properties and Large Second-Harmonic Generation Response of a Chiral Ternary Chalcogenide: Eu 2 SiSe 4

Eu(II)-containing chalcogenides are an emerging class of materials that are of great interest due to their high optical activity and intriguing magnetism. Here, we synthesized Eu 2 SiSe 4 as red-colored single crystals and characterized its structure with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the reported chiral monoclinic P2 1 symmetry at room temperature. The crystal structure of Eu 2 SiSe 4 comprises distorted SiSe 4 tetrahedral units and charge-balancing Eu(II) cations. Here, we develop a two-step solid-state synthesis method for Eu 2 SiSe 4 and compare it to the known boron chalcogenide method. We find the second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity of polycrystalline Eu 2 SiSe 4 to be ∼7 × AgGaS 2 , placing it among the highest-known SHG-active chalcogenides. No symmetry lowering is observed down to 100 K in single-crystal X-ray diffraction, although an anomalous expansion in the b-axis lattice parameter occurs and may be correlated to lattice modes of the SiSe 4 tetrahedra. We investigate the physical properties of Eu 2 SiSe 4 using magnetometry and heat capacity measurements and find a transition to an antiferromagnetic ground state at T N ≈ 5.5 K. The low-temperature transition releases less entropy than expected, which may be due to the complex crystal electric field effects of Eu(II).

Heteroanionic Control of Exemplary Second-Harmonic Generation and Phase Matchability in 1D LiAsS 2– x Se x

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds β-LiAsS 2–x Se x (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe 2 . These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional $\frac{1}{∞}$ [AsQ 2 ] - (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li + atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS 2–x Se x melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the β- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe 2 , which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS 2 ) and reaching 1.06 eV (β-LiAsSe 2 ). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of β-LiAsS 2–x Se x show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe 2 (d 36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS 2 . In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a d eff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS 0.25 Se 1.75 , and β-LiAsSe 2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 μm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe 2 , with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe 2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe 2 .
