Nonlinear Aeroelastic Analysis of the HIAD TPS Coupon in the NASA 8' High Temperature Tunnel: Theory and Experiment

The purpose of this work is to develop a set of theoretical and experimental techniques to characterize the aeroelasticity of the thermal protection system (TPS) on the NASA Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (HIAD). A square TPS coupon experiences trailing edge oscillatory behavior during experimental testing in the 8' High Temperature Tunnel (HTT), which may indicate the presence of aeroelastic flutter. Several theoretical aeroelastic models have been developed, each corresponding to a different experimental test configuration. Von Karman large deflection theory is used for the plate-like components of the TPS, along with piston theory for the aerodynamics. The constraints between the individual TPS layers and the presence of a unidirectional foundation at the back of the coupon are included by developing the necessary energy expressions and using the Rayleigh Ritz method to derive the nonlinear equations of motion. Free vibrations and limit cycle oscillations are computed and the frequencies and amplitudes are compared with accelerometer and photogrammetry data from the experiments.

Analysis of Nonlinear Shrinkage for the Bound Metal Deposition Manufacturing using Multi-scale Approach

We consider problem of nonlinear shrinkage of the metal part during bound metal deposition manufacturing on the ground and in zero-G. To analyze this problem we developed multi-scale physics-based approach that spans atomistic dynamics at the scale of nanoseconds and the full part shrinkage at the time scale of hours. Using this approach we estimated the key parameters of the problem including grain boundary width, coefficient of surface diffusion, initial redistribution of particles during debinding stage, micro-structure evolution from round particles to densely packed grains and corresponding change of the total and chemical free energy, and sintering stress. The introduced method was used to predict shrinkage at the level of two particles, filament cross-section, sub-model, and the whole green, brown, and metal parts. To further improve accuracy and reliability of the shrinkage predictions we propose concept of intelligent additive manufacturing of metal powders in space that combines the strengths of both physics-based and data-driven methods of analysis of AM.

Nonlinear pattern analysis of ventricular premature beats by mutual information

The frequency of ventricular premature beats (VPBs) has been related to the risk of mortality. However, little is known about the temporal pattern of occurrence of VPBs and its relationship to autonomic activity. Hence, we applied a general correlation measure, mutual information, to quantify how VPBs are generated over time. We also used mutual information to determine the correlation between VPB production and heart rate in order to evaluate effects of autonomic activity on VPB production. We examined twenty subjects with more than 3000 VPBs/day and simulated random time series of VPB occurrence. We found that mutual information values could be used to characterize quantitatively the temporal patterns of VPB generation. Our data suggest that VPB production is not random and VPBs generated with a higher value of mutual information may be more greatly affected by autonomic activity.

High-impact dynamic-response analysis of nonlinear structures

Program predicts expected deformations and stresses in nonlinear simple geometric structures subjected to high-impact loading. Technique is based on node-wise predictor-corrector approach and requires moderate computer storage and run time for most problems. Program extends to include physical and geometrical nonlinearities.

Lagrangian methods in the analysis of nonlinear wave interactions in plasma

An averaged-Lagrangian method is developed for obtaining the equations which describe the nonlinear interactions of the wave (oscillatory) and background (nonoscillatory) components which comprise a continuous medium. The method applies to monochromatic waves in any continuous medium that can be described by a Lagrangian density, but is demonstrated in the context of plasma physics. The theory is presented in a more general and unified form by way of a new averaged-Lagrangian formalism which simplifies the perturbation ordering procedure. Earlier theory is extended to deal with a medium distributed in velocity space and to account for the interaction of the background with the waves. The analytic steps are systematized, so as to maximize calculational efficiency. An assessment of the applicability and limitations of the method shows that it has some definite advantages over other approaches in efficiency and versatility.

Numerical nonlinear inelastic analysis of stiffened shells of revolution. Volume 3: Engineer's program manual for STARS-2P digital computer program

Engineering programming information is presented for the STARS-2P (shell theory automated for rotational structures-2P (plasticity)) digital computer program, and FORTRAN 4 was used in writing the various subroutines. The execution of this program requires the use of thirteen temporary storage units. The program was initially written and debugged on the IBM 370-165 computer and converted to the UNIVAC 1108 computer, where it utilizes approximately 60,000 words of core. Only basic FORTRAN library routines are required by the program: sine, cosine, absolute value, and square root.

Nonlinear motion analysis of flexible satellites

The article reviews research on pointing accuracies of flexible satellites with regard to derived equations of motion of individual elements and composite bodies. The solution of these equations may be achieved through the formulation of a set of singularly perturbed equations by eliminating the generalized position vector. These equations are generally solved by a method of asymptotic expansions if certain convergence criteria are satisfied. The analysis may be applied to dual-spin flexible satellites.
