Despite the dominance of Rhodanobacter species in the subsurface of the contaminated Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) site, very little is known about the mechanisms underlying their adaptions to the various stressors present at ORR. Recently, multiple Rhodanobacter strains have been isolated from the ORR groundwater samples from several wells with varying geochemical properties.

The Preliminary Design Guide Outline is intended to create a first iteration of the sections of the future Molten Salt Design guide, with an emphasis on gaps in the current industry accepted standard base that already exists. This outline will be a skeleton for the standard moving forward. With this outline, gaps within the current knowledge base are outlined to guide research moving forward.

Data provided include results of analyses of soil pore-water, soil moisture, and leaf litter samples collected at a Kougarok Hillslope site dominated by alder shrubs (KG_MM64) in the Seward Peninsula, Alaska during July and September 2017 and 2018. Samples were from surface soils in close proximity to 5 alder patches, collected upslope, within, and downslope of the alder patches. Pore water was analyzed for a comprehensive set of anions, cations, elemental analyses, and oxygen and nitrogen isotopes. Soil samples were collected for soil moisture determination. Leaf litter extracts were analyzed for carbon and nitrogen content and carbon and nitrogen isotopes. This dataset contains 3 *.csv files and 1 *.pdf file. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

The idea of covalency being directly correlated with selectivity in f-element separations has gained attention over the years. However, “covalency” as a concept is still under debate as it is not an experimental nor quantum mechanical observable. Regardless, covalency along with ionicity are still the main concepts used to explain the nature of the chemical bond of coordination complexes. Another concept that has gained the attention in the separations community is the hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory, which favors soft-donor ligands having the potential to increase selectivity for actinides (An) over the lanthanides (Ln) due to their ability to engage more effectively f-electrons in covalent interactions. However, it has been shown that while using softer donor ligands in fact increased orbital mixing and covalency with the actinides, it compromises the strength of the interaction owing to a decrease in the metal-ligand electrostatic interactions.1 Herein, we study the electronic structure of different types of chalcogenide ligands (LE, E = O, S, Se), their interaction with the uranyl ion, and their complexation free energies. Surprisingly, contrary to the expected order of covalency, i.e. An–LSe > An–LS > An–LO, our results suggest that the degree of covalency and associated complexation free energies depend on the nature of the coordinating moiety rather than solely on the directly coordinated atom. 1) Sadhu, Biswajit, and Michael Dolg.
