ATS-F millimeter wave propagation experiment data processing.

Review of the data processing program for the Applications Technology Satellite (ATS-F) scheduled for launch in 1973. The program consists of: (1) short term processing, which utilizes analog data recording and produces amplitude scintillation and time-frequency correlation studies; and (2) long term processing, which utilizes digitally recorded data to provide hourly and daily statistical output functions. The data acquisition and processing program planned for the ATS-F experiment provides a highly automated environment which emphasizes the unique requirements for the characterization of the propagation medium in the frequency bands required for the next generation of space communication systems.

A millimeter-wave pumped X-band uncooled parametric amplifier.

GaAs Schottky barrier varactors with a cutoff frequency of 800 GHz are used in a balanced diode-type parametric amplifier operating with a signal frequency at 7.5 GHz. The room-temperature parameters of the amplifier are a gain of 15 dB, a bandwidth of 500 MHz, and an excess noise temperature of 63 K (a noise figure of 0.86 dB).

Electron density measurements of an inhomogeneous plasma using millimeter wave Fabry-Perot interferometers.

The electron density of a laboratory generated inhomogeneous plasma was measured using 60-90, GHz flat-plate and 150 GHz semi-confocal Fabry-Perot interferometers. The plasma was a negative glow-type and had a measured parabolic electron density profile. An analytical comparison between the derived equations of electron density for an assumed homogeneous plasma slab and an inhomogeneous plasma with parabolic distribution showed that the slab approximation was valid for such a profile. Comparison of measured values of electron density with those using X-band and K-band interferometers for the same plasma indicated good agreement.

Millimeter wave experiment for ATS-F

A detailed description of spaceborne equipment is provided. The equipment consists of two transmitters radiating signals at 20 and 30 GHz from either U.S. coverage horn antennas or a narrow beam parabolic antenna. Three modes of operation are provided: a continuous wave mode, a multitone mode in which nine spectral lines having 180 MHz separation and spaced symmetrically about each carrier, and a communications mode in which communications signals from the main spacecraft transponder are modulated on the two carriers. Detailed performance attained in the flight/prototype model of the equipment is presented both under laboratory conditions and under environmental extremes. Provisions made for ensuring reliability in space operation are described. Also described the bench test equipment developed for use with the experiment, and a summary of the new technology is included.

ATS-F COMSAT millimeter wave propagation experiment.

Description of the transmitting and receiving system configurations to be used in an ATS-F propagation experiment designed to gather data on the attenuation of satellite uplink signals (at approximately 13.2 and 17.8 GHz) due to atmospheric hydrometeors (mostly rain). The data will be used for statistical determination of system power margins required for operational communications systems at frequencies above 10 GHz. A secondary analysis will study site diversity as a means of reducing the required system margins. A spacecraft transponder receives signals from 15 dual-frequency ground transmitter stations and retransmits these signals to a central ground receiving terminal at a frequency of 4 GHz.

Research in millimeter wave techniques

A model 180-GHz radiometer, employing a Cassegrain feed geometry with a parabolic main reflector and a subreflector fed by a corrugated conical horn, was constructed and tested. An absorber-coated chopper is used to modulate the signal, which is down-converted in a cross-guide harmonic mixer. A 100-GHz source was used to evaluate mixer performance and to optimize system parameters. Preliminary results indicate a noise figure of approximately 20 db is being achieved. Preliminary design studies and on-going research plans are discussed.

Electronically steerable millimeter wave antenna techniques for space shuttle applications

A large multi-function antenna aperture and related components are described which will perform electronic steering of one or more beams for two of the three applications envisioned: (1) communications, (2) radar, and (3) radiometry. The array consists of a 6-meter folded antenna that fits into two pallets. The communications frequencies are 20 and 30 GHz, while the radar is to operate at 13.9 GHz. Weight, prime power, and volumes are given parametrically; antenna designs, electronics configurations, and mechanical design were studied.

Data analysis report on ATS-F COMSAT millimeter wave propagation experiment, part 1

The 13/18 GHz COMSAT Propagation Experiment (CPE) was performed to measure attenuation caused by hydrometeors along slant paths from transmitting terminals on the ground to the ATS-6 satellite. The effectiveness of site diversity in overcoming this impairment was also studied. Problems encountered in assembling a valid data base of rain induced attenuation data for statistical analysis are considered. The procedures used to obtain the various statistics are then outlined. The graphs and tables of statistical data for the 15 dual frequency (13 and 18 GHz) site diversity locations are discussed. Cumulative rain rate statistics for the Fayetteville and Boston sites based on point rainfall data collected are presented along with extrapolations of the attenuation and point rainfall data.

A millimeter wave quasi-optical mixer and multiplier

The results of an experimental study of a biconical quasi-optical Schottky barrier diode mount design which could be used for mixing and multiplying in the frequency range 200-1000 Ghz are reported. The biconical mount is described and characteristics measured at 185 Ghz are presented. The use of the mount for quasi-optical frequency doubling from 56 to 112 Ghz is described and efficiency estimates given.

Research in millimeter wave techniques

The following is investigated; (1) the design of a 183 GHz single ended fundamental mixer to serve as a back up mixer to the subharmonic mixer for airborne applications, (2) attainment of 6 db single sideband conversion loss with the 6 GHz subharmonic mixer model, together with initial tests to determine the feasibility of pumping the mixer at w sub s/4, (3) additional ground based radiometric measurements, and (4) derivation of equations for power transmission of wire grid interferometers, and initial tests to verify these equations.

Millimeter-wave antenna design

Problems and opportunities are discussed for adapting certain design features and construction techniques, developed for producing high accuracy ground based radio dishes, to producing milimeter wave dishes for space use. Specifically considered is a foldable telescope of 24 m aperture and 9.6 m focal length, composed of 37 rigid hexagonal panels, which will fit within the 4.5 m diameter x 18 m long payload limits of space shuttle. As here conceived, the telescope would be a free flyer with its own power and pointing systems. Some of the structural design features and construction procedures are considered.
