System and method for voltage-based real-time micro-object position control with the aid of a digital computer

The system and method described allow for real-time control over positioning of a micro-object. A movement of at least one micro-object suspended in a medium can be induced by a generation of one or more forces by electrodes proximate to the micro-object. Prior to inducing the movement, a simulation is used to develop a model describing a parameter of an interaction between each of the electrodes and the micro-object. A function describing the forces generated by an electrode and an extent of the movement induced due to the forces is generated using the model. The function is used to design closed loop policy control scheme for moving the micro-object towards a desired position. The position of the micro-object is tracked and taken into account when generating voltage patterns in the scheme.

Design and demonstration of an economical SRF structure for Continuous Wave (CW), high-energy, Megawatt-class beams

Due to its very high RF-to-beam efficiency, superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities have become the technology of choice for the construction of large linear accelerators (linacs) for basic science applications (examples, ESS and PIP-II). The technology is also attractive for high volume industrial applications such as electron irradiation processing of wastewater and flue gas. However, SRF’s current reliance on liquid helium for cryogenic cooling introduces infrastructural and safety challenges for use in industrial settings. Cryocooler conduction-cooling is a recently developed novel technique for operating SRF cavities without requiring liquid helium. This project aims for technical design and economic assessment of a medium energy, high average power e-beam linac based on the conduction-cooled SRF technique for high volume irradiation treatment of wastewater. The goals of this project are (1) to design a medium energy (10 MeV), high average power (1 MW) electron beam accelerator around the cryocooler conduction-cooled SRF cavity technology, (2) demonstrate the required accelerating voltage on a prototype cavity, and (3) build a cost-model to evaluate capital and operating expense of the accelerator.

High resolution, two-dimensional imaging, microchannel plate detector for use on a sounding rocket experiment

We discuss a high resolution microchannel plate (MCP) imaging detector to be used in measurements of Doppler-shifted hydrogen Lyman-alpha line emission from Jupiter and the interplanetary medium. The detector is housed in a vacuum-tight stainless steel cylinder (to provide shielding from magnetic fields) with a MgF2 window. Operating at nominal voltage, the four plate configuration provides a gain of 1.2 x 10 exp 7 electrons per incident photon. The wedge-and-strip anode has two-dimensional imaging capabilities, with a resolution of 40 microns FWHM over a one centimeter diameter area. The detector has a high quantum efficiency while retaining a low background rate. A KBr photocathode is used to enhance the quantum efficiency of the bare MCPs to a value of 35 percent at Lyman-alpha.

Design of a Wideband 6-Anode Frequency Tripler at 300 GHz with Optimum Balance

We report on the design methodology of a fix-tuned split-block waveguide balanced frequency tripler working nominally at 300 GHz. It features six GaAs Schottky planar diodes in a balanced configuration. The circuit will be fabricated with JPL membrane technology in order to minimize dielectric loading and insure an accurate and uniform thickness of the substrate. The multiplier power handling is limited by the breakdown voltage of the diodes that depends on the doping level of the active layer. With six diodes, the current choice for the doping level leads to medium power handling capabilities of about 50 mW. Increasing the number of diodes to eight would be an option but would lead to increased difficulties in design and fabrication.

Generation of a strong core centering force in a submillimeter compound droplet system

By amplitude-modulating the driving voltage of an acoustic levitating apparatus, a strong core centering force was generated in a submillimeter compound droplet system suspended by the radiation pressure in a gaseous medium. Depending on the acoustic characteristics of the droplet system, it was found that the technique can be utilized advantageously in the multiple-layer coating of an inertial confinement fusion pellet.

High-power converters for space applications

Phase 1 was a concept definition effort to extend space-type dc/dc converter technology to the megawatt level with a weight of less than 0.1 kg/kW (220 lb./MW). Two system designs were evaluated in Phase 1. Each design operates from a 5 kV stacked fuel cell source and provides a voltage step-up to 100 kV at 10 A for charging capacitors (100 pps at a duty cycle of 17 min on, 17 min off). Both designs use an MCT-based, full-bridge inverter, gaseous hydrogen cooling, and crowbar fault protection. The GE-CRD system uses an advanced high-voltage transformer/rectifier filter is series with a resonant tank circuit, driven by an inverter operating at 20 to 50 kHz. Output voltage is controlled through frequency and phase shift control. Fast transient response and stability is ensured via optimal control. Super-resonant operation employing MCTs provides the advantages of lossless snubbing, no turn-on switching loss, use of medium-speed diodes, and intrinsic current limiting under load-fault conditions. Estimated weight of the GE-CRD system is 88 kg (1.5 cu ft.). Efficiency of 94.4 percent and total system loss is 55.711 kW operating at 1 MW load power. The Maxwell system is based on a resonance transformer approach using a cascade of five LC resonant sections at 100 kHz. The 5 kV bus is converted to a square wave, stepped-up to a 100 kV sine wave by the LC sections, rectified, and filtered. Output voltage is controlled with a special series regulator circuit. Estimated weight of the Maxwell system is 83.8 kg (4.0 cu ft.). Efficiency is 87.2 percent and total system loss is 146.411 kW operating at 1 MW load power.

Spatiotemporally resolved measurements of electric field around a piezoelectric transformer using electric-field induced second harmonic (E-FISH) generation

When a piezoelectric transformer (PT) is actuated at its second harmonic frequency by a low input voltage, the generated electric field at the distal end can be sufficient to breakdown the surrounding gas, making them attractive power sources for non-equilibrium plasma generation. Understanding the potential and electric fields produced in the surrounding medium by the PT is important for effectively designing and using PT plasma devices. In this work, the spatiotemporally resolved characteristics of the electric field generated by a PT operating in open air have been investigated using the femtosecond electric field-induced second harmonic generation (E-FISH) method. Here, electric field components were determined by simultaneously conducting E-FISH measurements with the incident laser polarized in two orthogonal directions relative to the PT crystal. Results of this work demonstrate the spatial distribution of electric field around the PT’s output distal end and how it evolves as a function of time. Notably, the strongest electric field appears on the face of the PT’s distal surface, near the top and bottom edges and decreases by approximately 70% over 3 mm. The time delay between the PT’s input voltage and measured electric field indicates that there is an about 0.45 phase difference between the PT’s input voltage and output signal.

Analog Signal Multiplexing System for the Iota Proton Injector

The Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) Facility at FNAL is a dedicated research and development center focused on advancing particle accelerator technologies for future applications worldwide. Currently, a key objective of FAST Operations is to commission the 2.5 MeV IOTA Proton Injector (IPI) and enable proton injection into the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) storage ring. The low and medium-energy sections of the IPI include four frame-style dipole trims and two multi-function correctors with independently controlled coils, requiring readout of 32 analog channels for current and voltage monitoring in total. To reduce cost and optimize rack space within the PLC-based control system, a 32-to-4 analog signal multiplexing system was designed and implemented. This system enables real-time readback of excitation parameters from all magnetic correctors. This paper presents the design, construction, implementation, and performance of the multiplexing system.

Ultrafast High Voltage Kicker System Hardware for Ion Clearing Gaps

Jefferson Lab (JLab) will collaborate with Radiabeam, LLC in a DOE SBIR Phase II Project (DOE Grant No. DE-SC0019684, title: “Ultrafast High Voltage Kicker System Hardware for Ion Clearing Gaps”) to develop and test a MHz high voltage nanosecond kicker system that enables the time structure required by the ion traps for high current electron beam cooling. High current (in particular energy recovery) linac based electron cooling facilities for medium to high energy bunched proton or ion beams are of great interest for the recently funded Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to which Jefferson Lab plays a critical role. The successful execution of this project will enable the capability to mitigate the ion trapping effect and circumvent a major obstacle preventing reliable operation of the crucial cooling facilities.

Flexible PCB Windings Size Optimization for Winding AC Resistance Minimization Under the Sinusoidal Voltage Regime

In this paper, optimization of the winding AC resistance of the flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) wire windings is performed. A one-dimensional model of the FPCB winding is introduced and an equation for the FPCB winding AC resistance and its low and medium frequency approximation are derived. The approximate FPCB winding AC resistance equation is used to derive optimum thickness of the FPCB winding conductor thickness at which minimum of winding AC resistance (global optimum) is achieved. The Finite Element Method analysis and experimental verification of derived equations (winding resistance, impedance, power loss, and temperature measurements) is performed in order validate derived model and winding resistance equation.

Linearized Distribution Optimal Power Flow for OEDI SI

This research is to meant to demonstrate the OEDI SI use case for distributed optimal power flow (DOPF). The goal was to formulate the optimal power flow problem in the distribution system for active and reactive power setpoints of PV systems using topology information and voltage measurements. The co-simulation runs every 15 minutes as outlined within the scenario file for the given feeder configuration. The linked GitHub repository includes five federates to achieve DOPF for the small, medium, large, and IEEE 123 feeder scenarios. We are using the OEDI SI framework, as well as the example feeder, sensor, recorder, and estimator federates provided in the example repository for OEDI SI. We also provide a runner script for switching between scenarios.

Building Large-Scale U.S. Synthetic Electric Distribution System Models

Rapid increases in distributed energy resources on distribution systems are prompting research efforts to improve and evaluate electric power distribution algorithms; however, there is a shortage of realistic, large-scale, U.S.-style test systems for the evaluation of such advanced algorithms. Some available tools to build large-scale test systems are of European style, and their application to studies focused on the United States might not be desirable given very different characteristics between the European and U.S. distribution designs. Motivated by this need, this paper develops detailed algorithms to build large-scale U.S. distribution systems and incorporates them in a new Reference Network Model, RNM-US. The approach starts with information from street maps and a catalog with electric equipment that includes power lines, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, and switching devices. The paper presents the algorithms through an illustrative case study of the different steps that comprise the process of building a synthetic distribution grid. Finally, the paper presents a medium- and a large-scale data set covering 10 million electrical nodes and 120,000 km of power lines, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method to build very large-scale synthetic distribution systems.

Photovoltaic investigation of minority carrier lifetime in the heavily-doped emitter layer of silicon junction solar cell

The results of experiments on the recombination lifetime in a phosphorus diffused N(+) layer of a silicon solar cell are reported. The cells studied comprised three groups of Czochralski grown crystals: boron doped to one ohm-cm, boron doped to 6 ohm-cm, and aluminum doped to one ohm-cm, all with a shunt resistance exceeding 500 kilo-ohms. The characteristic bulk diffusion length of a cell sample was determined from the short circuit current response to light at a wavelength of one micron. The recombination rates were obtained by measurement of the open circuit voltage as a function of the photogeneration rate. The recombination rate was found to be dependent on the photoinjection level, and is positive-field controlled at low photoinjection, positive-field influence Auger recombination at a medium photoinjection level, and negative-field controlled Auger recombination at a high photoinjection level.

The application of Dow Chemical's perfluorinated membranes in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells

Dow Chemical's research activities in fuel cells revolve around the development of perfluorosulfonic acid membranes useful as the proton transport medium and separator. Some of the performance characteristics which are typical for such membranes are outlined. The results of tests utilizing a new experimental membrane useful in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells are presented. The high voltage at low current densities can lead to higher system efficiencies while, at the same time, not sacrificing other critical properties pertinent to membrane fuel cell operation. A series of tests to determine response times indicated that on-off cycles are on the order of 80 milliseconds to reach 90 percent of full power. The IR free voltage at 100 amps/sq ft was determined and the results indicating a membrane/electrode package resistance to be .15 ohm-sq cm at 100 amps/sq ft.

Extremely-efficient, miniaturized, long-lived alpha-voltaic power source using liquid gallium

A power source converts .alpha.-particle energy to electricity for use in electrical systems. Liquid gallium or other liquid medium is subjected to .alpha.-particle emissions. Electrons are freed by collision from neutral gallium atoms to provide gallium ions. The electrons migrate to a cathode while the gallium ions migrate to an anode. A current and/or voltage difference then arises between the cathode and anode because of the work function difference of the cathode and anode. Gallium atoms are regenerated by the receiving of electrons from the anode enabling the generation of additional electrons from additional .alpha.-particle collisions.
