The absolute magnitudes and spectral types of the stars in the gamma Velorum system.

The ratio of the visual luminosities of the O and WC components of the binary system gamma (2) Vel has been derived by comparison of the emission-line strengths in the spectrum with those in the spectrum of a single WC8 star, HD 192103. The result is 1.4 mag, with the O star being brighter; the classification of the O star was found to be 09 I, so that the classification of gamma (2) Vel is WC8+09 I.

Near infra-red magnitudes of 248 early-type emission-line stars and related objects.

Nearly 250 early-type emission-line stars have been observed in the near infrared; approximately two thirds of these are found to exhibit excess radiation at these wavelengths. Two distinct mechanisms may contribute to the infra-red excesses: thermal radiation from circumstellar dust, and electron bremsstrahlung originating in a shell of ionized gas. It is not currently possible to distinguish between these two alternatives using infra-red photometry alone.

Correlation of the rate of ultrasound propagation with other characteristic magnitudes of the liquid state

The application of ultrasonic radiation to the procedure for determining the physical properties of liquids is discussed. The basis for linking the kinetic properties of liquids to the equilibrium properties through the molecular structure and the potential of the intermolecular forces is defined. The test procedure using ultrasonic radiation is described. Results of tests with specified fluids are tabulated.

Seasonal variation and magnitude of the solar sector structure-atmospheric vorticity effect

Evidence is reported for a seasonal variation in the effect of solar sector structure on terrestrial atmospheric vorticity. Graphs showing average response of the 50,000-Pa vorticity area index to solar magnetic sector structure during the time interval extending from 6 days before to 6 days after the time at which a sector boundary is swept past the earth indicate that a 10% drop in the average value occurs at the time of passage, but this effect is observed only during the winter months.

Orders of magnitude: A history of NACA and NASA, 1915-1976

A brief history of aeronautics and space exploration is presented. The Federal government's role in contributing, by research and development, to the advancement of aeronautics and space exploration is emphasized. The flight of man is traced from Kitty Hawk to walks and rides on the surface of the moon. Orbiting Solar Observatories, Orbiting Observatories, planetary exploration (Mariner Space Probes, Pioneer Space Probes) the Earth Resources Program, and Skylab are included. The development of the space shuttle is also discussed.

Approximate statistics of random vector magnitudes

Simple, rough approximations are presented for the mean and 99% values for random vectors of up to three independent elements. The accuracy of the provided approximate expressions has been investigated with the aid of Monte Carlo simulations involving 15 different combinations of the three statistical parameters. The results of this investigation are discussed.

Shear dampers for deflections of micro-inch magnitudes

The rotation of the TV camera on the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS77) spacecraft will excite the long magnetometer and heavy RTG booms which are slightly damped perturbances that have long settling times. To ensure clear TV pictures additional damping was required over micro-inch displacements and at low frequencies. The solution incorporated elastomeric shear dampers at the base of these booms which possessed high loss tangent values in the expected frequency and temperature ranges. Presented are the shear damper design, results of full scale horizontal boom tests and relative effects of damper sizing and temperature. Boom instrumentation and excitation used for the full scale tests are also discussed.

Colorimetry and magnitudes of asteroids

In the present paper, 1500 UBV observations are analyzed by a new rather general multiple scattering theory which provided clear insight into previously poorly-recognized optical nature of asteroid surfaces. Thus, phase curves are shown to consist of a surface-texture controlled component, due to singly scattered light, and a component due to multiple scattering. Phase curve shapes can be characterized by a single parameter, the multiple scattering factor, Q. As Q increases, the relative importance of the opposition effect diminishes. Asteroid surfaces are particulate and strikingly similar to texture, being moderately porous and moderately rough on a scale greater than the wavelength of light. In concequence, Q (and also the phase coefficient) correlate well with geometric albedo, and there exists a purely photometric means of determining albedos and diameters.
