Cosolvent enhanced lignocellulosic fractionation tailoring lignin chemistry and enhancing lignin bioconversion

Cosolvent Enhanced Lignocellulosic Fractionation (CELF) is an emerging solvolysis pretreatment to fractionate lignocellulosic biomass. Herein, the bioconversion performance of CELF lignin was fully evaluated for the first time. Results showed that CELF lignin possessed higher content of carboxylic acid OH, lower molecular weight, and disappeared β-O-4 and β-5 linkages compared to other two technical lignins including a conventional ethanol organosolv lignin (EOL) and a kraft lignin (KL). Rhodococcus opacus PD630 cell count from CELF lignin fermentation reached the highest value of 3.9 10 7 CFU/mL, representing a 62.5% and 77.3% improvement over EOL and KL, respectively. Correspondingly, lipid yield reached 143 mg/L from CELF lignin, which was 36.2% and 26.5% higher than from EOL and KL, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that more carboxylic acid groups and lower molecular weight contributed to the enhanced bioconversion performance of CELF lignin. This study demonstrates that CELF lignin is a promising candidate for bioconversion.

Assessing the availability of two bamboo species for fermentable sugars by alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment

We report this study comprehensively investigated two bamboo species (i.e. Neosinocalamus affinis and Phyllostachys edulis) in terms of their cell wall ultrastructure, chemical compositions, enzymatic saccharification, and lignin structure before and after alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment (AHP). During AHP, Neosinocalamus affinis (NAB) had higher delignification than Phyllostachys edulis (PEB), and thus showed better enzymatic digestibility (93.05% vs 53.57% for glucan). The fundamental chemical behavior of the bamboo lignins was analyzed by fluorescence microscope (FM), confocal Raman microscope (CRM), molecular weight analysis, and 2D HSQC-NMR. Results indicated that the PEB has thicker cell wall and more concentrated lignin in its compound middle lamella and cell corner middle lamella than NAB. Moreover, PEB lignin contains more G units (S/G of 0.95), in evident contrast to that of NAB lignin (S/G of 1.30), which favor the formation of C–C linkages, thus impeding its degradation during the AHP.

The impacts of building characteristics, social psychological and cultural factors on indoor environment quality productivity belief

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) plays a key role in determining occupants' productivity at work; however, analyses of the interconnected factors among building physical, attitudinal, social and demographic components in one study are lacking. To fill this research gap, this study investigates these interconnected factors' influence on occupants’ IEQ-productivity belief, defined as a personal, subjective evaluation of the linkage between the impacts of five IEQ aspects (the quality of indoor temperature, air, natural and electric lighting, and acoustics) and productivity. A cross-sectional survey data was collected in university offices from six countries (Brazil, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Taiwan and the U.S.). Results of multiple linear regression models indicate that IEQ satisfaction is the strongest positive predictor of the IEQ-productivity belief and this relationship is stronger in private offices. Country of residence is the second primary predictor. Several attitudinal-behavioral factors, including thermal comfort, perceived ease of controlling indoor environmental features, and attitudes toward sharing controls are all positively associated with IEQ-productivity belief. Interestingly, the level of control accessibility to light switches has the strongest impact as opposed to other controls. On the other hand, group norms and conformity intention are not significant predictors. Regarding demographics, men are more likely than women to perceive the IEQs to have positive impacts on their productivity, without considering other variables in the regression model; however, women are more likely than men to consider all IEQs as having positive impacts on productivity, after considering other variables. Furthermore, our findings provide suggestions for prioritizing wellness in the workplace since the early design stage.

Molecular structure models of amorphous bismuth and cerium carboxylate catalyst precursors

As our societal need for materials and energy has grown, so has our need for catalyst processes in hydrogen production. A major function in these applications, for both homogenous and heterogeneous catalysis processes, is the synthesis of an active metal catalyst. It must first be soluble to control the physical properties of the metal being used. Recent work in metal precursors has begun to turn toward these metal carboxylate types of material. Here, structural models are proposed for bismuth 2-ethylhexanoate and 2,2-dimethyloctanoate and cerium 2-ethylhexanoate. The bismuth compounds have been characterized at different ratios of bismuth to carboxylate as solutions of the free acids. Their structures are most consistent with a Bi 4 (RCO 2 ) 12 motif where the Bi ions are arranged in a flattened tetrahedron with Bi – Bi distances of about 4.3 Å. There is evidence for Bi – O – Bi linkages at low free acid concentrations. The cerium compound is most consistent with a linear tetracerium molecule where the Ce – Ce distances repeat at about 4.3 Å out to 16.4 Å. The models were generated by analogy with known crystal structures and compared to high-energy x-ray scattering data. To further evaluate the models, DFT calculations were made, and the equilibrium geometries were compared. The vibrational spectra calculated from those geometries are presented and compared to the experimental results. Magnetization vs. temperature data was collected on the cerium compound, and its behavior was consistent with the proposed model. A geometrical approach to determining the dimensionality and relative positions of the metal ions in these structures is presented.

Large negative thermal expansion in GdFe(CN) 6 driven by unusual low-frequency modes

Understanding the negative thermal expansion (NTE) mechanism is of great importance. In this work, we consider the new NTE compound GdFe(CN) 6 (αv = -34.2×10 -6 K -1 ) as a case study to investigate the NTE mechanism from the perspective of the lattice vibrational dynamics. The atomic mean-square displacements suggest that the NTE of GdFe(CN) 6 comes from the strong tension effect induced by the transverse vibrations of the atomic –Fe–Ctriple bondN–Gd– linkages, with the largest contribution given by N atoms. Lattice dynamics calculations show that three low-frequency optical modes at about 50 cm -1 show the largest negative Grüneisen parameters thus providing the largest contribution to the NTE. In conclusion, the existence of these unusual low-frequency vibrational modes can be ascribed to the presence of GdN 6 trigonal prisms in the framework structure of GdFe(CN) 6 .

Verifying the structure-property-performance relationship of Y6-based small molecule acceptors by alkoxy-side chain isomerization and conjugated skeleton asymmetry

Non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) such as Y6 derivatives were the current working horse for the top performing polymer solar cells (PSCs). For this reason, numerous chemical modifications have been explored for establishing structure–property-performance relationship for Y6-based NF-SMAs. In this work, we explored the isomerization on asymmetrical Y6 derivatives by varying the position of alkoxy side chain on the thiophene linkage between the core and one of the end groups of Y6. The isomers with differences in conformational restriction raised by noncovalent interactions as well as steric hindrance revealed distinctive behavior in crystallization and polymorphism, which led to a significant contrast in PSC performances. Here the X-TO1 molecule with alkoxy side chain facing the end group (outward) displayed preferred molecular configuration and polymorph, delivering power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.63%, while its isomer X-TO2 showed coexisted polymorphs significantly increased the charge recombination in the PSC devices led to a low PCE around 3%. This structure–property-performance relationship not only highlighted the elegancy of isomerization in tuning the photovoltaic performances but also identified polymorphism as one of the causes for impairing photovoltaic performances of PSCs.

Biocompatible organosolv fractionation via a novel alkaline lignin-first strategy towards lignocellulose valorization

Simultaneous valorization of both carbohydrate and lignin fractions in lignocellulose remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel lignin-first strategy using triethylene glycol (TEG) under alkaline conditions for effective biomass fractionation producing highly digestible carbohydrates and reactive lignin was developed. Delignification was over 80% and fermentable sugar yields were close to 90% after pretreatment at 90°C. The biocompatibility of TEG allowed direct enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid residue without washing, thus minimizing wastewater generation. Furthermore, the obtained lignin (TEGL) had an uncondensed structure with well-preserved β-O-4 linkage, leading to near-equal aromatic monomer yields compared to cellulolytic enzyme lignin after catalytic-free pyrolysis, demonstrating high valorization potential. Finally, the proposed TEG solvent system is promising for a green and sustainable biorefinery process to achieve the complete utilization of lignocellulose.

Double in-situ lignin modification in surfactant-assisted glycerol organosolv pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse towards efficient enzymatic hydrolysis

Organosolv pretreatment effectively fractionates lignocellulosic biomass for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis, yielding fermentable sugars. However, substantial lignin redeposition on the substrate surface and residual lignin content exacerbate lignin’s inhibitory effects on subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, an in-situ lignin modification is proposed to address this challenge by incorporating polyethylene glycol (PEG) series into glycerol organosolv (GO) pretreatment. According to the results obtained, PEG-assisted GO pretreated substrate exhibited significantly increased sugar yield during enzymatic hydrolysis, particularly with PEG 4000, showing 35.4% higher glucose yield over 72 h. The improved glucose yield with PEG could be attributed to changes in the physicochemical structure and properties of residual lignin, mitigating its non-productive interaction with cellulase enzymes. PEG's presence in GO pretreatment also increased β-O-4 linkages preservation by 55% and reduced phenolic hydroxyl groups by 28% in lignin fragments versus no surfactants. This outcome resulted from introducing glycerol and PEG hydroxyl tails into the lignin structure, forming α-etherified lignin and rendering it more hydrophilic. Simulations confirmed strong Van Der Waals and hydrogen bonding interactions between lignin units and PEG, hindering lignin fragments repolymerization. Incorporating PEG in the organosolv pretreatment proves highly beneficial for cellulase-mediated lignocellulosic biorefinery, resembling a lignin-first strategy. The optimized process enables efficient biomass utilization for sustainable fuels and chemicals production.

Process strategies for recovery of sugars, lipids, and lignin from oilcane bagasse using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES)

Sugarcane is being enhanced as a bioenergy crop by engineering it to accumulate and store lipids along with polymeric sugars in vegetative tissues. However, there is no existing process that allows for processing this new crop to recover both lipid and cellulosic sugars from the oilcane bagasse. Therefore, a comprehensive investi- gation of two pretreatment methods—natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) and chemical-free hydrothermal pretreatment (HT) was conducted to judge their suitability for recovering fermentable sugars, lipids, and lignin from bagasse. Two NADES, i.e., choline chloride: lactic acid (ChCl:LA) and betaine: lactic acid (BT:LA) were prepared using a 1:2 M ratio and were evaluated for pretreatment of oilcane bagasse at 10, 20, and 50 % (w/w) solids, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis at 10 % (w/w) solids. Notably, ChCl:LA NADES treatment at 10 % (w/ w) solids at 140 °C for 2 h, solubilized 78.8 % of lignin and 80.4 % of hemicellulose and allowed 82.7 % enzymatic conversion of glucans to glucose. In contrast, HT pretreatment removed approximately 87.6 % of the hemicellulose and provided an enzymatic glucose yield of 69.7 %. Furthermore, ChCl:LA operated at 50 % solids loading the enriched lipids 2.6-fold (9.2 wt%) in recovered solids compared to HT (6.4 %) and BT:LA (5.1 %) pretreatment processes. NMR-HSQC and GPC analysis showed that ChCl:LA also cleaved the most lignin β–O–4 linkages and demonstrated lower molecular weight compared to HT. As a result, this study demonstrates that NADES pretreatment is an effective green processing method for recovering lipids, sugars, and lignin from bioenergy crops at high solid loading (50 % w/w) within the context of an integrated biorefinery.

Coupling between DNA replication, segregation, and the onset of constriction in Escherichia coli

Escherichia coli cell cycle features two critical cell-cycle checkpoints: initiation of replication and the onset of constriction. While the initiation of DNA replication has been extensively studied, it is less clear what triggers the onset of constriction and when exactly it occurs during the cell cycle. Here, using high-throughput fluorescence microscopy in microfluidic devices, we determine the timing for the onset of constriction relative to the replication cycle in different growth rates. Our single-cell data and modeling indicate that the initiation of constriction is coupled to replication-related processes in slow growth conditions. Furthermore, our data suggest that this coupling involves the mid-cell chromosome blocking the onset of constriction via some form of nucleoid occlusion occurring independently of SlmA and the Ter linkage proteins. This work highlights the coupling between replication and division cycles and brings up a new nucleoid mediated control mechanism in E. coli.

CASM — A software package for first-principles based study of multicomponent crystalline solids

CASM is a software package that enables first-principles based studies of crystalline materials. It has been designed to treat coupled chemical, mechanical, vibrational, and magnetic degrees of freedom to determine ground state and finite temperature properties of crystals. The symmetry of the underlying parent crystal structure is used to enumerate perturbations of the parent crystal structure and generate derivative structures which can be input to first-principles calculations in order to explore the ground state energy landscape. CASM algorithmically constructs cluster expansions that fully couple discrete and continuous degrees of freedom, and generates highly efficient code to evaluate the cluster expansion basis functions. Widely used machine learning methods are integrated for fitting expansion coefficients to first-principle calculations. The fully parameterized cluster expansions can be combined with (kinetic) Monte Carlo methods to calculate finite temperature thermodynamic and kinetic properties. CASM Alloy Manager identifies distinct parent crystal structures in an alloy system, creating individual projects for each, and integrating the results. The integrated infrastructure facilitates the linkage between first-principles statistical mechanics predictions with higher length scale computational methods, such as phase field simulations. In conclusion, CASM projects are designed to be easy to share in repositories, to re-use, and to extend to include additional chemical species or types of degrees of freedom.

An acidic polysaccharide (AGC3) isolated from North American ginseng ( Panax quinquefolius ) suspension culture as a potential immunomodulatory nutraceutical

Polysaccharides isolated from Panax quinquefolius roots are widely used as nutraceuticals due to their immunomodulatory properties. Despite their popularity, several challenges exist in isolating ginseng root polysaccharides such as batch-to-batch structural inconsistencies and bacterial endotoxin contamination. A plant tissue culture-based platform offers a potential solution to isolate natural polysaccharide fractions with consistent chemical characteristics and reduced endotoxin content. In this study, an acidic polysaccharide fraction (AGC3) with immunomodulatory properties was isolated from Panax quinquefolius suspension cultures. The heterogeneous fraction (molecular weight: 4.81 and 32.14 kDa), purified by anion exchange chromatography, was predominantly composed of galactose (>60%) along with the presence of rhamnose, arabinose, glucose, glucuronic acid and galacturonic acid. The major glycosidic linkages were found to be t-Galp (47.7%), 4-Galp (15.6%), 2,4-Rhap (8.1%), 6-Galp (8.1%) and 4-GalAp (6.8%). Structural analyses indicated the presence of a pectic rhamnogalacturonan I polysaccharide in AGC3. AGC3 significantly (p < 0.05) stimulated RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells and primary murine splenocytes by enhancing the production of several immunomodulatory mediators such as IL-6, TNF-α, GM-CSF and MCP-1. The results also indicated the putative roles of NF-κB (p65/RelA) and MAPK (p38) signaling pathways in the immunostimulatory response. Additionally, AGC3 induced murine splenocyte proliferation, another major indicator of immunostimulation. Overall, AGC3 has the potential to be used as an immunostimulatory nutraceutical.

A dataset of eco-evidence tools to inform early-stage environmental impact assessments of hydropower development

The datasets described herein provide the foundation for a decision support prototype (DSP) toolkit aimed at assisting stakeholders in determining evidence of which aspects of river ecosystems have been impacted by hydropower. The DSP toolkit and its application are presented and described in the article “Evidence-based indicator approach to guide preliminary environmental impact assessments of hydropower development” [1]. Development of the DSP and the output for decision support centralize around 42 river function indicators describing the dimensionality of river ecosystems through six main categories: biota and biodiversity, water quality, hydrology, geomorphology, land cover, and river connectivity. Three main tools are represented in the DSP: A science-based questionnaire (SBQ), an environmental envelope model (EEM), and a river function linkage assessment tool (RFLAT). The SBQ is a structured survey-style questionnaire whose objective is to provide evidence of which indicators have been impacted by hydropower. Based on a global literature review, 140 questions were developed from general hypotheses regarding the impacts of dams on rivers. The EEM is a model to predict the likelihood of hydropower impacting indicators based on a several variables. The intended use of the EEM is for situations of new hydropower development where results of the SBQ are incomplete or highly uncertain. The EEM was developed through the compilation of a dataset containing attributes of dams, reservoirs, and geospatial information on environmental concerns, which was combined with data on ecological indicators documented at those sites through literature review. The model operates through 247 “envelopes” and weighting factors, representing the individual effect of each variable on each indicator, all available through spreadsheets. Finally, the RFLAT is a tool to examine causal relationships amongst indicators. Inter-indicator relationships were hypothesized based on literature review and summarized into node and edge datasets to represent the structure of a graphical network. Bayes theorem was used estimate conditional probabilities of inter-indicator relationships based on the output of the SBQ. Nodes and edges were imported into R programming environment to visualize ecological indicator networks. The datasets can be expanded upon and enriched with more detailed questions for the SBQ, building upon the EEM with to develop more sophisticated models, and identifying new relationships for the RFALT. Additionally, once the tools are applied to numerous hydropower developments, the output of the tools (e.g. evidence of impacted indicators) becomes a very useful dataset for meta-analyses of hydropower impacts.

Win-win transportation strategies for India: Linking air pollution and climate mitigation

Here, this article analyzes road transport in India to explore linkages between air pollution and climate change policies in the transportation sector. Five teams modeled five policy scenarios – fuel efficiency, electrification, alternative fuels, modal shifts, and moderation in transport demand – to explore which policy brings the largest synergetic effects in reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) emissions. The teams also modeled the comprehensive scenario which included policy measures from individual scenarios. The paper concludes that all of the measures provide strong co-benefits in reducing air pollutant and CO 2 emissions. The modeling results show that increased energy efficiency of passenger and freight vehicles has the largest protentional for reducing both CO 2 and PM 2.5 emissions. It is possible to reach even a larger reduction of air pollutants and CO 2 emissions by combining several policy measures in the comprehensive scenario.

The deformation and burst behavior of Zircaloy-4 cladding tubes with hydride rim features subject to internal pressure loads

This study is motivated by the desire to conduct a separate effects test replicating specific aspects of an in-pile pulse reactor test on high exposure light water reactor (LWR) fuel rods. The principal purpose of the tests was to determine whether temperature and or hydrogen concentration thresholds exist in assessing the vulnerability of a stress relieved zirconium alloy cladding tubes to low strain ruptures. A secondary objective was to determine whether observations of the cladding stress during deformation could aid in the understanding of the crack formation and propagation in cladding tubes with hydride rim features. Here, the study utilized artificially hydrided Zircaloy-4 cladding tubes and an isothermal, internal pressure test that was controlled with an in-situ strain measurement. The test results show a clear transition in failure vulnerability between room temperature and 150 °C. Below 150 °C, cladding tubes rupture at very low uniform plastic strain—even at relatively modest cladding hydrogen levels. At and above 150 °C, cladding tubes only rupture at low uniform plastic strain if the cladding hydrogen content is greater than 500 ppm and usually experience at least some modest amount of plastic deformation prior to rupture. Post-test metallographs from non-ruptured cladding tubes show numerous primary cracks forming in the hydride rim and arresting at the metal/hydride interface. This observation combined with the decrease in bulk yielding of hydrided cladding tubes when compared to fresh non-hydrided tubes leads to the conclusion that the fracture stress of the hydride rims is related to and bounded by the yield stress of the zirconium metal. Some evidence is presented for a change in crack propagation mechanism from one of void formation on hydride plates and linkage at temperatures below 150 °C to more classical ductile shearing beneath the primary crack tip at temperatures above 150 °C. This apparent change in crack propagation mechanism may help explain the observed temperature and hydrogen concentration thresholds.

Design of biphenylene-derived tunable dirac materials

The exploration of carbon allotropes has unveiled a series of two-dimensional (2D) materials with unique electronic and mechanical properties, yet the need for stable structures with tailored electronic properties persists. Here, in this study, we introduce a new class of 2D carbon allotropes derived from the biphenylene network (BPN), incorporating acetylenic linkages to tune their structural and electronic characteristics. Through density functional theory calculations, we identified ten novel BPN-derived structures that exhibit both energetic and dynamic stability, confirmed by cohesive energy and phonon spectrum analyses. Among them, BPN-02 and BPN04 are metallic, featuring critically-tilted type-III Dirac cones under ~ 5 % biaxial strain, while BPN-22 is a semiconductor with a band gap of 0.95 eV and exhibits highly anisotropic carrier mobility. Additionally, these structures demonstrate significant anisotropy in their elastic properties, further distinguishing them from other 2D carbon materials like graphene. Our findings suggest that these novel BPN-based structures have strong potential for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic applications, providing new avenues for the design and synthesis of advanced carbon materials.

Characterization of two types of polysaccharides from Eremurus hissaricus roots growing in Tajikistan

Eremurus Hissaricus (E.hissaricus) is a native plant of Tajikistan that has been used in traditional medicine and whose raw components have been identified as having potential for the domestic economy. We have found that carbohydrates comprise 80–85% of the root biomass, from which we have characterized two types of polysaccharides: A water-soluble polysaccharide (WSP) and an acid-soluble polysaccharide (ASP), with 23% and 8% yields, respectively. The results from FTIR, HPAEC-PAD, HPSEC, methylation linkage analysis and NMR spectroscopy ( 1 H, 13 C, zTOCSY, HSQC, HSQCTOXY and HMBC) demonstrated that WSP has a backbone of (1 → 4)-linked β-d-mannopyranosyl and β-d-glucopyranosyl residues in a 1.5:1 M ratio, having acetylated groups, with weight-average molecular weights of 495 kDa. Analyses of ASP indicate that it is comprised of d-galactose, d-mannose, and d-glucose in a molar ratio of 1.8: 1.6: 1.0, which is consistent with a branched galactoglucomannan polysaccharide with (1 → 4)-linked β-pyranose configurations, and weight-average molecular weight of 179 kDa. The FTIR absorption bands in the region of 875–890 cm 1 and NMR spectroscopy data confirm the presence of β-pyranose configuration of main polysaccharide backbone in the both ASP and WSP samples. These polysaccharides are an available raw material with the potential for use in a number of industrial applications.

Ferric chloride aided peracetic acid pretreatment for effective utilization of sugarcane bagasse

The synergetic impacts of ferric chloride aided peracetic acid (FPA) pretreatment were investigated to enhance the total biomass utilization through effective cellulose conversion and high-quality lignin production. The sugarcane bagasse pretreatment with 2% peracetic acid (PAA) and 0.1 mol/L ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) effectively removed 57.3% of lignin and 72.2% of xylan while preserving ~ 97% of cellulose from sugarcane bagasse under mild temperature (90 °C). The FPA pretreated sugarcane bagasse was effectively hydrolyzed with a glucose yield of 313.0 mg/g-biomass, which was 4.5 times higher than the yield of untreated biomass (69.75 mg/g-biomass) and 1.6 and 3.6 times higher than that of individual PAA and FeCl 3 pretreated sugarcane bagasse, respectively. The regenerated lignin (FPA lignin) showed great potential for further valorization by preserving the major interunit linkage (up to 86% of β-O-4) without significant carbohydrate contamination and lignin condensation due to its mild reaction conditions. In this paper, the combination of PAA and FeCl 3 synergistically enhanced the pretreatment efficiency on sugarcane bagasse and resulted in high fermentable sugar and high-quality lignin production.
