Modeling long-term changes in forested landscapes and their relation to the Earth's energy balance

The dynamics of the forested parts of the Earth's surface on time scales from decades to centuries are discussed. A set of computer models developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and elsewhere are applied as tools. These models simulate a landscape by duplicating the dynamics of growth, death and birth of each tree living on a 0.10 ha element of the landscape. This spatial unit is generally referred to as a gap in the case of the forest models. The models were tested against and applied to a diverse array of forests and appear to provide a reasonable representation for investigating forest-cover dynamics. Because of the climate linkage, one important test is the reconstruction of paleo-landscapes. Detailed reconstructions of changes in vegetation in response to changes in climate are crucial to understanding the association of the Earth's vegetation and climate and the response of the vegetation to climate change.

Development of large wind energy power generation system

The background and development of an experimental 100 kW wind-energy generation system are described, and the results of current field tests are presented. The experimental wind turbine is a two-bladed down-wind horizontal axis propeller type with a 29.4 m diameter rotor and a tower 28 m in height. The plant was completed in March, 1983, and has been undergoing trouble-free tests since then. The present program calls for field tests during two years from fiscal 1983 to 1984. The development of technologies relating to the linkage and operation of wind-energy power generation system networks is planned along with the acquisition of basic data for the development of a large-scale wind energy power generation system.

Starbursts in Galaxies: Implications of Molecular and Far-infrared Observations

Starburst galaxies are defined in several ways (colors, optical spectroscopic signatures, and excess radio flux), and observational evidence indicating that episodes of rapid star formation occur in many galaxies with active nuclei is presented. There is a good correlation of 100 micron luminosity with CO emission, and of both quantities with excess nonthermal radio flux. This fact requires some linkage between central and global star formation rates. In addition, the presence of starbusts distorts the appearance of the molecular gas in which they occur. Using far infrared color temperatures and comparisons of CO isotopes, it is shown that the strong (12)CO emission in these galaxies does not accurately trace the H2 distribution, probably because the starburst raises the avearage temperature of the cloud ensemble.

Remote sensing of directional wave spectra using the surface contour radar

A unique radio-oceanographic remote sensing instrument was developed. The 36 GHz airborne Surface Contour Radar (SCR) remotely produces a real-time topographical map of the sea surface beneath the aircraft. It can routinely produce ocean directional wave spectra with off-line data processing. The transmitter is a coherent dual-frequency device that uses pulse compression to compensate for the limited available power at Ka band. The radar has selectable pulse widths of 1, 2, 4, and 10 nanoseconds. The transmitting antenna is a 58 lambda horn fed dielectric lens whose axis is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. It illuminates an elliptical mirror which is oriented 45 deg to the lens' longitudinal axis to deflect the beam towards the region beneath the aircraft. The mirror is oscillated in a sinusoidal fashion through mechanical linkages driven to a variable speed motor to scan the transmitter beam (1.2 deg X 1.2 deg) with + or - 16 deg of the perpendicular to the aircraft wings in the plane perpendicular to the aircraft flight direction.

Spectroscopic analysis of radiation-generated changes in tensile properties of a polyetherimide film

The effects of electron radiation on Ultem, a polyetherimide were studied for doses from 2 x 10 to the 9th power to 6 x 10 to the 9th power rad. Specimens were studied for tensile property testing and for electron paramagnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopic measurements of molecular structure. A Faraday cup design and a method for remote temperature measurement were developed. The spectroscopic data show that radiation caused dehydrogenation of methyl groups, rupture of main-chain ether linkage, and opening of imide rings, all to form radicals and indicate that the so-formed atomic hydrogen attached to phenyl radicals, but not to phenoxyl radicals, which would have formed hydroxyls. The observed decays of the radiation-generated phenoxyl, gem-dimethyl, and carbonyl radicals were interpreted as a combining of the radicals to form crosslinking. This crosslinking is the probable cause of the major reduction in the elongation of the tensile specimens after irradiation. Subsequent classical solubility tests indicate that the irradiation caused massive crosslinking.

Hemispherical latching apparatus

An apparatus for securing payloads in a space vehicle such as the space shuttle is described. The apparatus includes many latching assemblies carried by a platform on the vehicle and a like number of latching elements carried by the payload and adapted to mate with the latching assemblies. The novelty of the invention is believed to reside in the use of complementary hemispherical elements which automatically align and engage with one another. This enables a simple but effective mode of operation and avoids the need for hinged linkages and similar moving parts.

Polyimides containing oxyethylene units. II - Polymerization of 3.3', 4.4'-benzophenonetetra carboxylic dianhydride and pyromellitic dianhydride

The study is concerned with the polymerization of diamines 2a-d with readily available dianhydrides, i.e., 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). The synthesis and polymerization of asymmetric diamines containing substituted alkylene ether linkages are also investigated. It is assumed that the flexibility introduced into the polymer chain through the use of such diamines would result in moderate glass transition temperatures that would allow the systems to be melt processed. Mixtures of diamines are also copolymerized so as to further disrupt the polymer's symmetry and recurrence regularity. The properties of the resulting polymers are briefly discussed.

Template-directed synthesis of novel, nucleic acid-like structures

In studying the origins of life, it is important to examine reactions of substrate mixtures that could plausibly have accumulated on the primitive earth. Nucleoside diphosphates would probably have been synthesized along with the standard nucleotides under prebiotic conditions. For these reasons, the template-directed reactions of activated derivatives of these diphosphates, alone or mixed with activated nucleotides, were investigated. An activated derivative of deoxyguanosine 3',5'-didphosphate condensed efficiently on a polycytidylate template to give oligonucleotide analogous in which each 3,5'ophosphodiester bond was replaced by a pyrophosphate linkage. Oligomers were formed even in the absence of a template, but much more slowly. Template-directed condensation occurred also with an analogous deoxadenosine derivative on polyuridylic acid and with an analogous acycloguanosine derivative on polycytidylic acid.

Improved perfluoroalkylether fluid development

The feasibility of transforming a commercial linear perfluoroalkylether fluid into a material stable in the presence of metals and metal alloys in oxidizing atmospheres at 300 C without the loss of the desirable viscosity temperature characteristics was determined. The approach consisted of thermal oxidative treatment in the presence of catalyst to remove weak links, followed by transformation of the created functional groups into phospha-s-triazine linkages. It it found that the experimental material obtained in 66% yield from the commercial fluid exhibits, over an 8 hr period at 300 C in the presence of Ti(4Al, 4Mn) alloy, thermal oxidative stability better by a factor of 2.6x1000 based on volatiles evolved than the commercial product. The viscosity and molecular weight of the developed fluid are unchanged and are essentially identical with the commercial material. No metal corrosion occurs with the experimental fluid at 300 C.

Latching mechanism for deployable/re-stowable columns useful in satellite construction

A column longeron latch assembly provides the securing mechanism for the deployable, telescoping column of a hoop/column antenna. The column is an open lattice structure with three longerons disposed 120 deg apart as the principle load bearing member. The column is deployed from a pair of eleven nested bays disposed on opposite sides of a center section under the influence of a motor-cable-pulley system. The longeron latch is a four bar linkage mechanism using the over-center principle for automatically locking the longeron sections into position during deployment. The latch is unlocked when the antenna is to be restowed. A spring pack disposed in the end of each longeron serves to absorb stress forces on the deployed column through the cam head piston and abutting latch from an adjacent longeron.

University participation via UNIDATA, part 2

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) is presently completing UNIDATA, Phase II, considered to be the design phase of the UNIDATA Project. The four major components of the UNIDATA System are: (1) global services which access is provided, (2) long haul communication for providing that access, (3) local services for providing access and local management of acquired data, and (4) local interactive processing and graphical display. Each component is described in detail with linkages among the components elucidated. Within this framework, access to the PCDS is discussed. It is pointed out that access to the PCDS could occur via general purpose computer-to-computer communications providing remote log on to the system. The UNIDATA System could also be used to transfer information from the PCDS, provided the appropriate software is available to receive the data. Both of these scenarios require agreements on the access protocols and appropriate physical connections. Universities' needs for weather information on a near real-time basis, and UNIDATA has already established a satellite broadcast data service for this purpose.

Network access to PCDS (SPAN, ESN, SESNET, ARPANET)

One of the major goals of the National Space Science Data Center is to increase access to NASA data systems by enhancing networking activities. The activities are centered around three basic networking systems: the Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN); the Earth Science Network (ESN); and the NASA Packet Switched System (NPSS). Each system is described, linkages among systems are explained, and future plans are announced. The inclusion of several new climate nodes on SPAN or ESN are also mentioned. Presently, the Pilot Climate Data System is accessible through SPAN and will be accessible through NPSS by summer and ESN by the end of 1986. Ambitious plans for implementation are underway. The implementation of these plans will represent a major advance in the utilization and accessibility of data worldwide.

Experience with synchronous and asynchronous digital control systems

Flight control systems have undergone a revolution since the days of simple mechanical linkages; presently the most advanced systems are full-authority, full-time digital systems controlling unstable aircraft. With the use of advanced control systems, the aerodynamic design can incorporate features that allow greater performance and fuel savings, as can be seen on the new Airbus design and advanced tactical fighter concepts. These advanced aircraft will be and are relying on the flight control system to provide the stability and handling qualities required for safe flight and to allow the pilot to control the aircraft. Various design philosophies have been proposed and followed to investigate system architectures for these advanced flight control systems. One major area of discussion is whether a multichannel digital control system should be synchronous or asynchronous. This paper addressed the flight experience at the Dryden Flight Research Facility of NASA's Ames Research Center with both synchronous and asynchronous digital flight control systems. Four different flight control systems are evaluated against criteria such as software reliability, cost increases, and schedule delays.

Two types of chaos in non-linear mechanics

The two types of chaos, weak and strong, associated with the Liapunov and Hadamard instabilities respectively, are analyzed. The geometrical representation of weak chaos is considered, and criteria of this chaos are formulated using the geometrical interpretation of dynamics. Weak chaos in inertial motion of two-bar linkage is discussed. The analysis of strong chaos is restricted to a review of results published elsewhere.

The influence of sampling rate on the dynamics and control of aeronautical systems

It is shown in the design of aeronautical control systems that sampling rate variations give rise to migrations of the discrete eigenvalues for both the plant and the controllers. In general, these migrations tend to degrade simulation fidelity and the overall performance of Ultrareliable Fault Tolerant Control Systems (UFTCS). These systems consist of a redundant asynchronous network of microprocessors which use sensor information to generate the servo commands that drive actuators, thrust linkages, etc. A change in the sampling period of a single microprocessor will, in addition to causing an eigenvalue shift, alter the magnitude of the servo command issued by the controller. The influence of these changes and the effect of initial conditions and skew are considered.

Open system magnetic evolution of the taos plateau volcanic field, Northern New Mexico. I - The petrology and geochemistry of the servilleta basalt

MULTIFIT, an embodiment of the conceptual structure needed in modeling multisource and multiprocess magmatic systems, is described. This program, which uses familiar materials balance methodology and the equilibrium form of the Rayleigh equations, links evolutionary arrays, which is turn collectively relate the starting and final compositions of a given magmatic system. Moreover, MULTIFIT incorporates variations within major element data arrays; the linkage between them can be tested using an extension of the least squares algorithm, which selects the best branch point according to the minimum-sum-of-squared-residuals criterion. Advantages and disadvantages of the materials balance approach used in this program are discussed, an example is provided, and equations utilized by MULTIFIT are summarized. While MULTIFIT may not be the best approach for poorly constrained models involving partial melting for complex mixing, it may ultimately prove useful for ascertaining trace element partition coefficients in magnetic systems.
