NSUF Industry Engagement Meeting Summary

NSUF held its FY23 industry engagement committee (NIEC) meeting at EPRI in Charlotte, NC during September 26-27, 2023. Over 50 participants from 25 organizations joined the meeting in person or virtually. The Objectives of the meeting were to inform the industry about the NSUF program, to collect industry feedback, and to strengthen industry collaboration and partnerships. Invitees were encouraged to come prepared with questions for NSUF and to consider ways NSUF can be leveraged for the advancement of nuclear energy. The NIEC is one of the NSUF stakeholder communities that can provide input to NSUF and inform program decisions. For this meeting, NSUF partnered with EPRI, USNRC, GAIN, and the US nuclear energy industry to exchange information and provide feedback on topics within irradiation effects on nuclear fuels and materials.

Complete Initial Studies in Microstructural Studies of Nuclear Graphite

Nuclear graphite is a critical material for the performance and safety of high-temperature reactors, making its study essential for the successful deployment of next-generation reactors in the United States. During the past year, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has contributed extensively to advancing the understanding of nuclear graphite’s properties, behavior, and applications; particular focus has been given to irradiation effects, oxidation mechanisms, thermal and mechanical performance, and long-term stability under reactor conditions. This report provides an update on the ongoing publications being prepared at ORNL. These studies are collectively intended to build a comprehensive knowledge base on nuclear graphite. The studies focus on key aspects such as microstructural characterization, oxidation behavior, advanced analytical techniques, molten salt infiltration, technique development, and billet-to-billet variability. By summarizing the progress of these publications, this report outlines ORNL’s contributions to the field, identifies knowledge gaps, and proposes future research directions. The findings presented in these studies will help enhance the understanding of nuclear graphite’s behavior, support the qualification of nuclear graphite materials, further the development of new techniques and guidelines for using microscopy techniques, and improve reactor safety and performance.

The advanced characterization, post-irradiation examination, and materials informatics for the development of ultra high-burnup annular U-10Zr metallic fuel

U-Zr metallic fuel is a promising fuel candidate for Gen Ⅳ fast spectrum reactors. Previous experimental irradiation campaigns showed that the sodium thermal bonded U-10Zr fuel design can achieve a burnup of 10% fissions per initial heavy metal atom (FIMA). Advanced metallic fuel designs are pushing the burnup limit to 20% or even 30% FIMA. To achieve the higher burnup and eliminate the pyrophoric sodium, a prototypical annular fuel has been designed, fabricated, clad with HT-9 in the Materials and Fuels Complex, and irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactors of Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to a peak burnup of 3.3% FIMA. During irradiation, the mechanical contact between fuel and cladding acts as a thermal bond. The irradiation lasted for 132 days in the reactor. Recently, the archived fresh and irradiated fuel samples were characterized using advanced characterization capabilities in the Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL) of INL. This article summarizes the results of advanced characterization and computer vision-based materials informatics to reveal the irradiation effects on U-Zr metallic fuel. Future work will focus on further implementation of advanced characterization and statistical data mining to improve the fidelity of fuel performance modeling and support U-Zr metallic fuel qualification for fast spectrum reactors.
