An algorithm for obtaining the minimal realization of a linear time-invariant system and determining if a system is stabilizable-detectable

A definition of centralized fixed modes of a system, which is an adoption of the definition of fixed modes for a decentralized system is made. It is shown that the centralized fixed modes of a system can be easily and efficiently calculated in terms of the eigenvalues of the system, and that the calculation of such fixed modes enables one to determine, in a numerically efficient way, whether a system is controllable, observable, stabilizable, or detectable. An efficient algorithm for reducing a system to minimal realization form is then given. The algorithms have been effectively used on systems of order up to 100.

Feedback invariants for linear systems defined over rings

A coefficient-assignability theorem is presented for systems defined over a commutative ring with 1. The conditions examined include all the general results on coefficient-assignability available in the literature. It is concluded that the proposed techniques are not effective for the case of the weaker property of pole placement when it is assumed that the commutative ring is a PID. Morse's well-known theorem seems to be the best result available for this situation.

Robotic manipulator control systems with invariant dynamic characteristics

The paper deals with robotic manipulator control systems with dynamic characteristics. It is shown that using model reference adaptive control techniques makes it possible to develop control algorithms which will maintain uniformly high performance over a wide range of system motions and payloads.

Identifiability of unknown noise covariance matrices for some special cases of a linear, time-invariant, discrete-time dynamic system

Two off-line schemes are proposed for the identification of unknown noise covariance matrices Q and R of a discrete-time dynamic system. The first scheme is based on a maximum a posteriori cost function utilizing smoothed state estimates, while the second is based on a maximum likelihood cost function utilizing filtered state estimates. Sensitivity of the cost functions to Q and R is analyzed for the following cases: (1) single-input single-output systems; (2) multiinput single-output systems; and (3) single-input multioutput systems with a diagonal R. Identifiability criteria are presented for the cases considered and demonstrated by examples.

On the variation of G and scale invariant gravitation - A reply

In 1977 Canuto et al. proposed a formalism to deal with the possible difference between gravitational and atomic clocks (or times). The formalism was incomplete since the authors only dealt with the gravitational Lagrangian LG, leaving the specific form of the matter Lagrangian Lm for a later study. Kembhavi and Pollock (1981) have proposed a matter Lagrangian which they define as 'the only possible one' or 'the inescapable form of Lm'. Adding this Lm to Lg, they claim that the theory does not allow for a variable G. The present paper gives a mathematical proof that the proposed matter Lagrangian, far from being 'the only one' or 'the inescapable form', is actually a very special case which already contains imprinted all the conclusions Kembhavi and Pollock claim to have discovered. Their results are therefore erroneous.

Linear Hamiltonian systems - The Riccati group and its invariants

The action of the Riccati group on the Riccati differential equation is associated with the action of a subgroup of the symplectic group on a set of Hamiltonian matrices. Within this framework canonical forms are developed for the matrix coefficients of the Riccati differential equation.

A substructure coupling procedure applicable to general linear time-invariant dynamic systems

A substructure synthesis procedure applicable to structural systems containing general nonconservative terms is presented. In their final form, the non-self-adjoint substructure equations of motion are cast in state vector form through the use of a variational principle. A reduced-order model for each substructure is implemented by representing the substructure as a combination of a small number of Ritz vectors. For the method presented, the substructure Ritz vectors are identified as a truncated set of substructure eigenmodes, which are typically complex, along with a set of generalized real attachment modes. The formation of the generalized attachment modes does not require any knowledge of the substructure flexible modes; hence, only the eigenmodes used explicitly as Ritz vectors need to be extracted from the substructure eigenproblem. An example problem is presented to illustrate the method.

On the breakdown of asymptotic Poincare invariance in D = 3 Einstein gravity

It is shown through a series of calculations that neither momentum nor boosts are definable for finite energy solutions of Einstein gravity in D = 3. The contrast between the effects of Lorentz transformations on the corresponding metrics for D = 3 and D = 4 gravity is demonstrated, and some comparisons with the vector gauge treatment of the problem are offered.

Statistical mechanics and invariant perception

The problem of discrimination among ensembles of images generated by distortions of a prototype and the addition of noise is considered. As the noise level is increased, the discrimination task becomes qualitatively more difficult in that optimal discrimination requires the computation of increasingly longer-ranged correlations, or the solution of increasingly difficult optimization problems. These results suggest the use of such image ensembles in probing the computational abilities of the human visual system, and possible theoretical implications of such experiments are discussed.

Distortion invariant pattern recognition with phase filters

A recently developed approach for pattern recognition using spatial filters with reduced tolerance requirements is employed for the generation of filters containing mainly phase information. As anticipated, the recognition levels were decreased, but they remain adequate for unambiguous identification together with appreciable amounts of distortion immunity. Furthermore, the information content of the filters is compatible with low devices like spatial light modulators.

Solar cycle invariance in solar wind proton temperature relationships

The relationships between solar wind proton temperature and velocity and between temperature and momentum flux density at 1 AU are examined using National Space Science Data Center IMP 8 solar wind data obtained from late 1984 to early 1985. These relationships are compared with similar ones obtained from a variety of solar wind data spanning 14 years, from 1966 to 1980. It is found that these relationships, particularly the one between temperature and velocity, are very stable over the solar cycles from which these data were drawn. This suggests that the basic physical processes which accelerate and heat the solar wind have remained unchanged for the last 20 years.

Evaluation of binary-phase-only filters for distortion-invariant pattern recognition

The paper examines the performance of fSDF (filter synthetic discriminant function) binary-phase-only filters (BPOFs) for images in the distortion-range that were not members of the training set. Consideration is given to the nature of the tradeoff between the extent of the distortion range and the correlator performance for fSDF-BPOFs, and to the probable constraints this tradeoff will impose on a realized optical correlator.

Discrete integration of continuous Kalman filtering equations for time invariant second-order structural systems

A general form for the first-order representation of the continuous second-order linear structural-dynamics equations is introduced to derive a corresponding form of first-order continuous Kalman filtering equations. Time integration of the resulting equations is carried out via a set of linear multistep integration formulas. It is shown that a judicious combined selection of computational paths and the undetermined matrices introduced in the general form of the first-order linear structural systems leads to a class of second-order discrete Kalman filtering equations involving only symmetric sparse N x N solution matrices.

Implications of chaos, scale-invariance, and fractal statistics in geology

A set of three nonlinear total differential equations (Lorenz equations) exhibiting deterministic chaos is considered, and it is shown that these equations demonstrate that deterministic equations with deterministic initial conditions can yield stocastic solutions with fractal statistics. The logistic map, fractal distributions, and fragmentation are discussed. It is pointed out that well-defined fractal distributions of earthquakes are found both regionally and globally, and that the general applicability of the fractal relation for seismicity can provide the basis for a quantitative seismic hazard assessment. It is suggested that the governing physics of erosional topography is nonlinear and may be related to a fractal distribution of storms and floods that generate and renew erosional feature such as gullies and drainage systems.

Neptune's magnetic field - Calculation of field geometric invariants derived from the I8E1 GSFC/BRI model

L shell values along the Voyager 2 encounter trajectory and those associated with the N1 through N6 moons and N1R through N6R rings of Neptune are computed numerically on the basis of a simplified description of the Neptunian magnetic field derived from the Goddard Space Flight Center/Bartol Research Institute I8E1 model, which includes internal terms up to and including the octupole (but no external terms). Like Uranus, the large tilt between the dipole term and the rotation axis causes the moons and rings to sweep a very large range of L shells. Their orbital motion introduces additional periodicities, causing the maxima and minima in L space to vary systematically with time.
