Sonic wind tunnel of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of Lille

A 65 hp wind tunnel with a 40 mm by 240 mm airstream is described. This wind tunnel can achieve speeds in the neighborhood of the speed of sound, both subsonic and supersonic. It is useful in studying the transonic bump technique. The test section is 600 mm long. The side walls are made of transparent glass, and both the upper and lower walls are deformable, each through the use of nine jacks with elastic sleeves. So as to avoid condensation, the airstream's temperature is stabilized by an air exchanger at the temperature of the outside air. The first results for supersonic operation, the distribution of Mach numbers within the airstream between the parallel walls, the value of the use factor, and the diffuser's efficiency are all given.

A standard description and costing methodology for the balance-of-plant items of a solar thermal electric power plant. Report of a multi-institutional working group

Standard descriptions for solar thermal power plants are established and uniform costing methodologies for nondevelopmental balance of plant (BOP) items are developed. The descriptions and methodologies developed are applicable to the major systems. These systems include the central receiver, parabolic dish, parabolic trough, hemispherical bowl, and solar pond. The standard plant is defined in terms of four categories comprising (1) solar energy collection, (2) power conversion, (3) energy storage, and (4) balance of plant. Each of these categories is described in terms of the type and function of components and/or subsystems within the category. A detailed description is given for the BOP category. BOP contains a number of nondevelopmental items that are common to all solar thermal systems. A standard methodology for determining the costs of these nondevelopmental BOP items is given. The methodology is presented in the form of cost equations involving cost factors such as unit costs. A set of baseline values for the normalized cost factors is also given.

Galileo Institute for Astronomy (IFA) charge-coupled device (CCD) system

A fully portable self-contained charge-coupled device system has been constructed for shared use with the Galileo Project Imaging Team. The detector currently incorporated in the system is a Texas Instruments 500 x 500 three-phase CCD that has been thinned to operate in the backside illuminated mode. The detector and camera mainframe electronics were provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The support electronics and control interfaces necessary to operate the mainframe were constructed. The data system, which is built around a DeAnza Visacom VC-5000 Image Processor with an imbedded LSI-11 minicomputer, was also integrated. The capability to do image processing in real-time at the telescope has proved to be extremely valuable. The overall system read noise has been measured at 25 electrons. Full-well capacity is 40,000 electrons. Some results from laboratory tests and initial observing runs at the Mauna Kea 2.2-m telescope are presented.

The galactic center; Proceedings of the Workshop, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, January 7, 8, 1982

Observations and theoretical models of the galactic center are discussed, together with future observational capabilities. Radio observations of the molecular gas clouds and continuum around Sgr A are reported, as are IR continuum observations of the central 30 arcmin of the galaxy. IR data at 150, 200, and 300 microns are also cited, together with balloon-borne near-IR observations of the galactic central bulge. The galactic center has been examined with IR spectroscopy to characterize the ionized gas, the B-alpha and Ne II lines, the O I and O III lines in Sgr A, and the 10 micron emissions. Gamma ray observations have indicated the presence of positron annihilation, and further studies have been made in the 0.3-1.0 MeV range. Models for the compact source at the galactic center have considered accreting black holes, an accretion disk featuring Compton scattering to emit the positron radiation, and a protostar in the center of Sgr A. The gas motions and the potential triaxiality of the galactic center are discussed, and future NASA, ESA, Franco-Soviet, and Japanese spacecraft for X ray and gamma ray detection and mapping are described.

Radar activities of the DFVLR Institute for Radio Frequency Technology

Aerospace research and the respective applications microwave tasks with respect to remote sensing, position finding and communication are discussed. The radar activities are directed at point targets, area targets and volume targets; they center around signature research for earth and ocean remote sensing, target recognition, reconnaissance and camouflage and imaging and area observation radar techniques (SAR and SLAR). The radar activities cover a frequency range from 1 GHz up to 94 GHz. The radar program is oriented to four possible application levels: ground, air, shuttle orbits and satellite orbits. Ground based studies and measurements, airborne scatterometers and imaging radars, a space shuttle radar, the MRSE, and follow on experiments are considered.

EPA Enviropod. A summary of the use of the Enviropod under a Memorandum of Understanding among EPA Region 8, the State of Utah, and the University of Utah Research Institute

Twenty-three missions were flown using the EPA's panoramic camera to obtain color and color infrared photographs of landslide and flood damage in Utah. From the state's point of view, there were many successes. The biggest single obstacle to smooth and continued performance was unavailable aircraft. The Memorandum of Understanding between the State of Utah, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Center for Remote Sensing and Cartography is included along with forms for planning enviropod missions, for requesting flights, and for obtaining feedback from participating agencies.

Activities of the Solid State Physics Research Institute

Three research programs are reviewed. These programs are muon spin rotation, studies of annealing in gallium arsenide and Hall effect studies in semiconductors. The muon spin rotation work centers around the development of a facility at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of BNL. Studies of annealing in GaAs concerns itself with the measurement of depolarization in GaAs. The Hall effect studies of proton damaged semiconductors provide new information on the nature of defects and dislocations in GaAs.

Methods of downloading to user institutions

The Pilot Climate Data System (PCDS) not only supports the ability to output data in a uniform structure via the Common Data Format (CDF, but also supports the ability to provide data in native format for any data set supported by the PCDS. Methods are discussed for acquiring data in either format from the PCDS for further work at remote sites. Four levels of remote utilization are defined, based on the extent of offloading the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) computer and local PCDS processing. Characteristics of each level are thoroughly explained, including details of information and data transfers, downloading, uploading, and offloading of the NSSDC computer. Only the levels themselves are specified here. The first level defined is that of a network-based distributed PCDS. A subset of the PCDS software is ported to another VAX and made available on a network (i.e., SPAN) node. There is no subset of the PCDS at the second level, but it is also network based. Non-network utilization of the PCDS, requiring dial-up log on, is denoted as a third level. Finally, at the fourth level, personal computer utilization of the PCDS through dial-up log on with proper terminal emulation is defined.
