Energycane and Miscanthus are highly sustainable and productive perennial grasses that produce a large annual crop of shoot biomass. Theoretical analysis of metabolism has suggested that these crops could be engineered to accumulate 20% of their harvestable biomass as oil. Given their much higher biomass yields than soybean and canola, this would yield several times more oil per acre. This could be converted to biodiesel or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by well‐established technologies. Energycane is well suited to the southeast quarter of the contiguous 48 states and Miscanthus to the northeast quarter. The objective of this award was to provide the foundation for converting these crops to oilcanes from DNA constructs and transformation to field trials and pilot plant development of oil extraction. Genetic engineering focused on development and implementation of improved constructs to increase oil levels, and increased photosynthesis to support the additional energy needed for oil production. The specific progress in each of our subtasks follows together with the products arising.

Sandia researchers are addressing the urgent challenge of minimizing dilute and distributed methane emissions. The team is focused on generating stable methane-consuming microbial consortia for deployment in engineered environmental systems. This innovative work aims to produce stable inocula of these consortia and implement viral controls for microbes that generate methane, significantly reducing emissions.

For reducing the cost of H 2 production by enhancing the efficiency and cyclability of water splitting reactions, we aim to understand the relationship between microstructure and surface reaction performance on perovskite oxides. In this quarter, mesoscale simulations were carried with various 3D porous microstructures to characterize the microstructure-dependent H 2 production. During the water splitting process, incoming gas including steam (H 2 O) passes through porous regions, which can induce local pressure variations according to the Bernoulli’s principle. Accordingly, we developed the mesoscale simulation method to characterize the reaction kinetics with inhomogeneous local pressures within porous microstructures.
The Advanced Scale Up Reactor Experiment (ASURE) facility at NETL is being designed to be a fuel-flexible multi-purpose reactor that can be used for pyrolysis/gasification or evaluation of other high pressure “circulating fluidized bed” (CFB) chemical processes. The initial system design calculations for pyrolysis/gasification are presented in this work showing the expected performance of the ASURE facility when used as a biomass conversion reactor. Several other areas of application include gasification of any carbonaceous fuel including biomass, coal, plastics, and other waste materials. The reactor can therefore be used to produce SYNGAS of various compositions and hydrogen as well as other high value chemicals resulting from a typical tuned gasification process. This paper discusses an ASPEN model of the facility, focusing on the riser of the CFB reactor and the solids recirculation loop. The ASPEN model divides the riser into two sections. A bottom section which receives ash, char and sand which have been recirculated from a return loop. In this section an inert fluidization gas, (N2 or CO2), is introduced which acts as the primary mover of the solids through the system. The bottom section is equipped with a restricted air feed so that the recirculated char can be partially oxidized. This oxidation process along with the inventory of recirculating sand are used to effectively control the temperature in the following two chemical conversion sections of the reactor which are the pyrolysis zone followed by a tar cracking zone. Fresh fuel is added to the pyrolysis zone and undergoes drying and devolatilization. The products ash, char, volatile matter, and water vapor exit the pyrolysis zone and enter the reaction block for tar cracking. Steam and CO2 gasification reactions will be incorporated into the tar cracking zone, however at the design operating temperature, conversion from these reactions is expected to be essentially zero. The unit when completed in 2026 will test mixtures of biomass, plastics, and waste coal. This presentation discusses the basic ASPEN engineering design model for this project and provides preliminary sensitivity studies to determine how the various parts of the reactor will perform.

Conference presentation on WAAM process optimization on Ni-based superalloy Haynes® 282®. This alloy is targeted for advanced power generation systems for its superior high temperature mechanical properties. Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) offers attractive cost and materials savings with high deposition rates. Based on initial build process optimization, WAAM blocks were made, and screened for defects using high-throughput CT scanning. The microstructural evolution in arc energy range of 250-700 J/mm was characterized in the as-built and aged conditions, using electron microscopy. Results showed self-consistent microstructure across conditions, with grain size dependence on arc energy, MC and M6C carbides in as-built, and blocky grain boundary M23C6 in as-heat-treated condition. Further reductions in as-built porosity were explored through 20+ combinations of H2 and CO2 additions to shielding gas. Initial results show improved wetting behavior, and bead overlap with up to 1% H2 and up to 0.25% CO2. Combination of experimentally determined datasets provided comprehensive understanding of process-structure-property relationships in WAAM Haynes 282.

VALID continues to serve as a library of high-quality models used for evaluating SCALE and nuclear data. Large number of cases are in the pipeline. Online repository is available for use. Future plans include simplifying the process for adding cases, including additional models outside the ICSBEP Handbook (HTC models, DNCSH models, International Handbook of Evaluated Reactor Physics Benchmark Experiments [IRPhE], SINBAD, etc.), and increasing the availability of models and results for external users.

Reactions on unstable nuclei, particularly those on the neutron-rich side of stability, are important for both fundamental and applied physics. For fundamental science, the most prevalent use case is astrophysi cal nucleosynthesis by rapid neutron capture—the r-process—by which heavy nuclei are formed in extreme astrophysical environments, such as in supernovae and neutron star mergers; see, e.g., Refs. [1–3]. For ap plications, these processes are relevant for the interpretation of radiochemical data from historic nuclear tests, which contribute to our ability to certify the enduring stockpile in the absence of nuclear testing [4]; see Ref. [5] for a broader discussion of applications. However, reaction cross sections involving unsta ble species are generally poorly understood, for the simple reason that useful data become scarce as one moves away from stability. While there are avenues for improving the amount and quality of data for these species [6], one is fundamentally reliant on nuclear theory to make progress on these fields of study.
