Gray-level transformations for interactive image enhancement

A gray-level transformation method suitable for interactive image enhancement was presented. It is shown that the well-known histogram equalization approach is a special case of this method. A technique for improving the uniformity of a histogram is also developed. Experimental results which illustrate the capabilities of both algorithms are described. Two proposals for implementing gray-level transformations in a real-time interactive image enhancement system are also presented.

High latitude minor ion enhancements - A clue for studies of magnetosphere-atmosphere coupling

An investigation is conducted of upper ionosphere molecular ion composition data, which because of the unexpected, abrupt enhancements sometimes exhibited at high latitudes, may indirectly offer additional clues to understanding the processes by which the lower atmosphere becomes perturbed. It is found that molecular ion irregularities are sometimes localized in a relatively narrow region of time and space. The abruptness of these events suggests that lower atmosphere energetic processes presumed responsible for the ion enhancements may also be narrowly distributed.

Enhancement and evaluation of Skylab photography for potential land use inventories, part 1

The author has identified the following significant results. Three sites were evaluated for land use inventory: Finger Lakes - Tompkins County, Lower Hudson Valley - Newburgh, and Suffolk County - Long Island. Special photo enhancement processes were developed to standardize the density range and contrast among S190A negatives. Enhanced black and white enlargements were converted to color by contact printing onto diazo film. A color prediction model related the density values on each spectral band for each category of land use to the spectral properties of the various diazo dyes. The S190A multispectral system proved to be almost as effective as the S190B high resolution camera for inventorying land use. Aggregate error for Level 1 averaged about 12% while Level 2 aggregate error averaged about 25%. The S190A system proved to be much superior to LANDSAT in inventorying land use, primarily because of increased resolution.

Enhancement of LANDSAT imagery by combination of multispectral classification and principal component analysis

Digital enhancement of LANDSAT imagery was obtained by application of principal component analysis separately on each of the classes previously determined in a multispectral classification step. Each part of the image is thus enhanced whatever its spectral signature may be. A document was obtained which is a synthesis between a conventional image and an ordinary computerized classification. The interpreter can, at the same time, take into account not only the classification but also other features such as context and structure. An example is discussed with the help of geological interpretation.

Polar enhancements of nightglow emissions near 6230A

Night airglow emissions near 6230A, as observed from the Ogo 4 spacecraft in 1967-8, show enhancements at polar latitudes by more than a factor of ten over mid and low latitude values. The enhancements are generally not symmetrical with either the north pole or the auroral oval. They are attributed in part to increases in the Meinel band emissions of OH, particularly as associated with a stratospheric warming event, and in part to increases in nitric oxide densities in the lower thermosphere.

On the causes of spectral enhancements in solar wind power spectra

Enhancements in power spectra of the solar-wind ion flux in the frequency neighborhood of 0.5 Hz had been noted by Unti et al. (1973). It was speculated that these were due to convected small-scale density irregularities. In this paper, 54 flux spectra calculated from OGO 5 data are examined. It is seen that the few prominent spectral peaks which occur were not generated by density irregularities, but were due to several different causes, including convected discontinuities and propagating transverse waves. A superposition of many spectra, however, reveals a moderate enhancement at a frequency corresponding to convected features with a correlation length of a proton gyroradius, consistent with the results of Neugebauer (1975).

A new image enhancement algorithm with applications to forestry stand mapping

The theory and applications are presented of a new image enhancement algorithm which refines computer classification maps of multispectral data. The refinement eliminates connected sets smaller than a prespecified size and merges them to the surrounding area. Conventional practices in forestry timber stand mapping requires small geographic areas to be absorbed by surrounding large areas to form homogeneous stands. This homogeneity is often incompatible with the statistical formulation of homogeneity. Elements within a timber stand which should be labeled as one feature often correspond to more than one class mapped by existing computer classification techniques. The new algorithm is designed to postprocess classification maps to result in more usable timber stand maps. The new image enhancement technique is compared with an accepted neighbor-checking postprocessing technique, demonstrating the superiority of the new technique for forestry stand mapping.

Enhancement of solar heavy nuclei at high energies in the 4 July 1974 event

Relative abundances of energetic nuclei in the 4 July 1974 solar event are presented. The results show a marked enhancement of abundances that systematically increase with nuclear charge numbers in the range of the observation, 6 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 26 for energies above 15 MeV/nucleon. While such enhancements are commonly seen below 10 MeV/nucleon, most observations at higher energies are found to be consistent with solar system abundances. The energy spectrum of oxygen is observed to be significantly steeper than most other solar events studied in this energy region. It is proposed that these observations are characteristic of particle populations at energies approximately 1 MeV/nucleon, and that the anomalous features observed here may be the result of the high energy extension of such a population that is commonly masked by other processes or populations that might occur in larger solar events.

Wind enhanced planetary escape: Collisional modifications

The problem of thermal escape is considered in which both the effects of thermospheric winds at the exobase and collisions below the exobase are included in a Monte Carlo calculation. The collisions are included by means of a collisional relaxation layer of a background gas which models the transition region between the exosphere and the thermosphere. The wind effects are considered in the limiting cases of vertical and horizontal flows. Two species are considered: terrestrial hydrogen and terrestrial helium. In the cases of terrestrial hydrogen the escape fluxes were found to be strongly filtered or throttled by collisions at high exospheric temperatures. The model is applied to molecular hydrogen diffusing through a methane relaxation layer under conditions possible on Titan. The results are similar to the case of terrestrial hydrogen with wind enhanced escape being strongly suppressed by collisions. It is concluded that wind enhanced escape is not an important process on Titan.

A possible edge effect in enhanced network

K-line observations of enhanced network taken with the NASA/SPO Multichannel Spectrometer on September 28, 1975, in support of OSO-8 are discussed. The data show a correlation between core brightness and asymmetry for spatial scans which cross enhanced network boundaries. The implications of this result concerning mass flow in and near supergranule boundaries are discussed.

Land classification of south-central Iowa from computer enhanced images

The author has identified the following significant results. Enhanced LANDSAT imagery was most useful for land classification purposes, because these images could be photographically printed at large scales such as 1:63,360. The ability to see individual picture elements was no hindrance as long as general image patterns could be discerned. Low cost photographic processing systems for color printings have proved to be effective in the utilization of computer enhanced LANDSAT products for land classification purposes. The initial investment for this type of system was very low, ranging from $100 to $200 beyond a black and white photo lab. The technical expertise can be acquired from reading a color printing and processing manual.

Digital enhancement of computerized axial tomograms

A systematic evaluation was conducted of certain digital image enhancement techniques performed in image space. Three types of images were used, computer generated phantoms, tomograms of a synthetic phantom, and axial tomograms of human anatomy containing images of lesions, artificially introduced into the tomograms. Several types of smoothing, sharpening, and histogram modification were explored. It was concluded that the most useful enhancement techniques are a selective smoothing of singular picture elements, combined with contrast manipulation. The most useful tool in applying these techniques is the gray-scale histogram.

Discrimination of rock classes and alteration products in southwestern Saudi Arabia with computer-enhanced LANDSAT data

Digital LANDSAT MSS data for an area in the southwestern Arabian Shield were computer-enhanced to improve discrimination of rock classes, and recognition of gossans associated with massive sulphide deposits. The test area is underlain by metamorphic rocks that are locally intruded by granites; these are partly overlain by sandstones. The test area further includes the Wadi Wassat and Wadi Qatan massive sulphide deposits, which are commonly capped by gossans of ferric oxides, silica, and carbonates. Color patterns and boundaries on contrast-stretched ratio color composite imagery, and on complementary images constructed using principal component and canonical analyses transformations, correspond exceptionally well to 1:100,000 scale field maps. A qualitative visual comparison of information content showed that the ratio enhancement provided the best overall image for identification of rock type and alteration products.

Noncompressive density enhancements in the solar wind

When the bulk flow speed is nearly constant or falling, high densities are sometimes observed in the solar wind. These densities do not appear to be generated in interplanetary space. It is noted that the magnetic field is not enhanced within these events, and that the proton and/or electron temperatures are low, varying in opposition to the density. About 1/3 of these density events contains interplanetary magnetic field reversals, some of which are noisy and do not qualify as sector boundaries. It is estimated that the average event contains approximately 10 to the 16th g of material and 2.6 x 10 to the 31st ergs, so that aggregated events, when they are common, make a negligible contribution to the total mass and energy budget of the solar wind at 1 AU. It is suggested that there may be an association between density enhancements and solar coronal mass ejection events.

Relative abundances of energetic nuclei in the July 4, 1974, solar event are presented. The results show a marked enhancement of abundances that systematically increase with nuclear charge numbers in the range of the observation (Z between 6 and 26) for energies above 15 MeV/nucl. The energy spectrum of oxygen is observed to be significantly steeper than most other solar events studied in this energy region. It is proposed that these observations are characteristic of particle populations at energies of the order of 1 MeV/nucl and that the anomalous features observed may be the result of the high-energy extension of such a population that is commonly masked by other processes or populations that might occur in larger solar events.

Experiments concerning the laser-enhanced reaction between vibrationally excited O3 and NO

The enhancement in reaction rate between O3 and NO is studied for the case of O3 vibrationally excited by a CO2 laser. Chemiluminescence observations of a vibrationally excited and an electronically excited nitrogen dioxide reaction product provide information on the separate contributions to the overall reaction rate of these two reactive channels. The contribution of the stretching and bending modes of O3 to the reaction rate enhancement is also discussed. In addition, consideration is given to the nonreactive vibrational deactivation of vibrationally excited O3.
