Stakeholder Engagement Review Meeting Summary Report

Sustainability in the context of the Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program is the ability to maintain the safe and economic operation of the existing fleet of nuclear power plants now and in the future. It has two objectives with respect to long-term operations: (1) to provide science and technology-based solutions to industry to safely enhance the economical operation of power reactors; and (2) to manage the aging of systems, structures, and components (SSCs) so that nuclear power plants can continue to operate safely and cost-effectively.

INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT TO ESTABLISH A ROBUST SECURITY APPROACH TO MOBILE RADIOACTIVE SOURCES

The mobile radiological sources used in the well-logging and radiography industries are of sufficient curie quantities to be categorized as desirable material for malicious actors. Beyond the security risk posed by these sources, there is also an understanding of the potential damage, both reputational and monetary, that a lost source would have on the licensee and the industry overall. Identifying and communicating the risk these sources pose with impacted stakeholders is a critical first step in developing a security approach. Common day-to-day operations within both industries drive the unique security challenge of mobile sources. From storage facilities, transportation vehicles, temporary storage locations, and use in the field, each phase creates challenges regarding source control and accountability. All aspects of the operational use of these sources needs to be fully understood in order to address security equipment enhancements, policies, procedures, and training. This paper will leverage more than ten years of experience that ORS has gained working closely with industry partners and mobile radiological source users across the well-logging and radiography industries. It will identify the risk posed by mobile radiological sources, clearly define the operational phases of each industry, identify security best practices of mobile sources, and discuss what long-term, sustainable security looks like within these industries. In addition, it will explore areas of a robust security approach that are not commonly given priority in these industries, such as alarm adjudication and response.

Arctic Community Engagement: Enhancing Energy Affordability, Resilience, Security

The changing Arctic geopolitical and natural environment presents significant new challenges and opportunities for innovation, economic development, and sustainable energy, as well as enhancing resilience and security in Alaska communities and the greater Arctic region. NREL's Arctic strategy focuses on addressing the impacts of climate change, developing a clean energy and weatherization workforce in the arctic, advancing energy innovation, developing climate appropriate and affordable housing, and ensuring energy security in an era of growing geopolitical threats.

ABF Industry Engagement Lab Call with Danimer Scientific

This Agile BioFoundry Directed Funding Opportunity project with Danimer Scientific focuses on the development of a strain and a corresponding bioprocess to convert bio-based feedstocks to mixed composition polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Danimer Scientific produces PHAs today at industrial scale in proprietary strains and for many applications where bio-based, biodegradable materials are advantaged. The project team consists of NREL to lead the strain engineering efforts, PNNL to conduct systems biology experiments that will inform further strain engineering, and Danimer to conduct bioprocess development and materials development. To date, we have on-boarded Danimer strains and demonstrated successful engineering thereof. We anticipate conducting systems biology studies in Spring 2023. Overall, the impact of this DFO project could be improved material properties accessed through the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle for designer PHA production.

The Intern Professional Development Center: A Model for Improving Student Engagement Within Industry - 20006

Many innovations and technical improvements have been made over the last half-century regarding our understanding of nuclear materials, with some of the brightest minds in the world collectively working towards a cleaner, brighter, healthier future. However, there is a demographical oddity with the enormous technical workforce that helped shape this new world: they are aging, collectively. Known as the 'silver tsunami,' mass retirements are in the near future for many technical industries, something that the industrial community is not entirely prepared to accommodate. There is an urgent need for a tech-savvy generation to replace the baby boomers, and there must be an uninterrupted hand-off from one generation to the next of institutional knowledge and best practices. Further, it is not enough to simply replace every retiring engineer with a younger one in a 'cold hand-off' - this information transfer takes time. Many educational communities, such as those in the Tri-Cities, Washington, are rising to the challenge, with STEM-focused programs, introducing students to technical concepts and potential career opportunities at an early age. However, while individually, academic institutions search for internships and industry has open positions for interested students, no single clearinghouse exists in the Mid-Columbia region to match talent with opportunities, regardless of the sending or receiving organizations. To fill this void, AYB Drafting (AYB) has established a career development and personal growth center, the Intern Professional Development Center (IPDC). The IPDC, located in Richland, Washington, addresses the problem of what has been referred to as the 'Graying of America,' as it bridges the gap between education and career for the up and coming workforce, creating valuable efficiencies for the young workforce and the industry alike. The operating principles and details of the initial IPDC launch are discussed in the following text, as well as the apparent success and overwhelming positive feedback received in just the first year of operation.
