Accessibility of near-Earth asteroids, 1990

Previous research which analyzed the accessibility of all known near-Earth asteroids is updated. Since then, many new near-Earth asteroids have been discovered, and 1928 DB, the most accessible asteroid at that time, has been recovered. Many of these recently discovered near-Earth asteroids have promising orbital characteristics. In addition to accessibility (as defined by minimum global delta v), ideal rendezvous opportunities are identified.

Regular variability of the shape of the primary minimum of the orbital light curve of SS 433 with the phase of the precessional period

The regular variations of the shape of the primary minimum of the orbital 13.082-day light curve of SS 433 with the phase of the 162.5-day processional period were discovered by analysis of the photometrical databank. The regular variability of the shape of the primary minimum of the discovered light curve of SS 433 reflects displacement with the 26-day double orbital period of at least two hot bright spots on the surface of the processional accretional disk and their eclipse by a normal star. Other aspects of the investigation are further discussed.

Gravitational lenses: The current sample, recent results, and continuing searches

Gravitational lensing is one of the topics in astrophysics that was quite extensively discussed over time before it was actually discovered. Ten years after the discovery of the first one, it is interesting to note how the field has developed. After an initial slow rate of discovery, the last few years have seen an explosion in the number of reported cases. Attention was drawn to the first few cases because quasars at the same red shift, with similar optical spectra, were observed with angular separations of only a few arc seconds. Most observational effort has been devoted to searching for new candidate lens systems and carefully measuring their properties, both to test whether they are indeed lensed and to provide constraints for modeling. A classification of the lenses is into rings, arcs, multiples, and doubles, where the progression is from sources close to the optical axis to far from the optical axis. The known candidate systems are listed. The searches for gravitational lenses are proving to be successful, and more lenses continue to be discovered serendipitously. Many searches are under way, along with instruments that will routinely increase the resolution of astronomical imaging.

The BATSE SLED: The problem and the correction

The Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) has been in space for 4 months and, by anyone's reckoning, is performing better than even the most optimistic pre-flight predictions. That doesn't mean there haven't been some small surprises. Because of the discreteness of gamma-ray energies available to us in pre-flight testing, we could not subject the instrument to the continuous distribution of energies it now sees in space. Therefore, it was not until the beginning of mission operations that a small non-linearity was discovered in the low energy region of the SPD spectra. The nickname for this depression is the SLED (Spectroscopy Low-Energy Depression). Sample spectra for module 6 at two gains (1X and 0.4X) are given. Note that the position of the sled is gain-independent in channel space. A further study on a non-flight module discovered the cause lay in the spectroscopy analog electronics. Above a certain energy threshold, the digital signal from the SPEC-FAST2 discriminator causes, in effect, an extra small amount of charge to be added to the SHER analog input. The laboratory measurements of SHER output energy as a function of input energy are presented. The change of slope at the point of the SLED results in narrower bin widths for the channels in that region. The SLED is approximately 5 channels wide. It should be mentioned that below the SLED and for many decades above the SLED the response is extremely linear. The proposed fix was to move the lower straight line up to match the extrapolation of the upper straight line, shown by the dotted line. In effect, this means reassigning channel numbers. All channel edges lower than the SLED are moved a fixed amount to higher channel numbers. Channel edges in the SLED are moved a different amount depending on their position. The latter obviously results in narrower channel widths in energy space.

Cosmogenic radioisotopes on LDEF surfaces

The radioisotope Be-7 was discovered in early 1990 on the front surface, and the front surface only, of the LDEF. A working hypothesis is that the isotope, which is known to be mainly produced in the stratosphere by spallation of nitrogen and oxygen nuclei with cosmic ray protons or secondary neutrons, diffuses upward and is absorbed onto metal surfaces of spacecraft. The upward transport must be rapid, that is, its characteristic time scale is similar to, or shorter than, the 53 day half-life of the isotope. It is probably by analogy with meteoritic metal atmospheric chemistry, that the form of the Be at a few 100 km altitude is as the positive ion Be(+) which is efficiently incorporated into the ionic lattice of oxides, such as Al2O3, Cr2O3, Fe2O3, etc., naturally occurring on surfaces of Al and stainless steel. Other radioisotopes of Be, Cl, and C are also produced in the atmosphere, and a search was begun to discover these. Of interest are Be-10 and C-14 for which the production cross sections are well known. The method of analysis is accelerator mass spectrometry. Samples from LDEF clamp plates are being chemically extracted, purified, and prepared for an accelerator run.

Emission-line and continuum properties of 92 bright QSOs - Luminosity dependence and differences between radio-selected and optically selected samples

The emission line and continuum properties of new spectra of 92 QSOs are investigated. A detailed deconvolution of the semiforbidden C III 1909 A blend reveals that the secondary feature is almost certainly Al III 1859 A. A study of the Mg II 2800 A emission-line profiles suggests that the broad 'shoulders' often observed are probably intrinsic to the Mg II emission line. It is shown that the QSOs discovered by slitless spectroscopic methods do not differ significantly from those discovered by UV excess surveys. Significant correlations with luminosity are found for W(Mg II), W(semiforbidden C III), I(C III)/I(Mg II), and the continuum ratio fv(1909 A)/fv(2800 A). All of the significant correlations are substantially stronger for a radio-selected subsample compared to a radio-quiet subsample. The C IV and semiforbidden C III emission lines each have a mean blueshift relative to Mg II of 450 km/s while semiforbidden C IV has a mean blueshift relative to semiforbidden C III of 200 km/s.

Petrogenesis of the western highlands of the moon - Evidence from a diverse group of whitlockite-rich rocks from the Fra Mauro formation

A group of KREEPy basalts has been discovered in Apollo 14 soils. These samples exhibit similarities to both HA and VHK basalts, albeit with much higher REE abundances, and contain up to 2 vol pct whitlockite and can be explained by assimilation of a K-, REE- and P-rich fluids by an original HA or VHK basalt. This KREEP component could have been produced late in the evolution of the lunar magma ocean and is similar in composition to QMD at Apollo 14. Two rocks have trace element compositions that are representative of actual KREEP. One of the samples appears to be petrographically pristine and could represent an actual KREEP basalt rock. Five subophitic high-Al basalts represent sampling of either a slowly cooled impact melt sheet or, more likely, the same basalt flow. Two 'quasi-pristine' highland rocks confirm the postulate of a connection between KREEP and the alkali suite. A newly discovered alkali anorthosite is a plagioclase cumulate with about 15 percent trapped KREEPy liquid.

Are there two kinds of blue stragglers in globular clusters?

Blue stragglers made from collisions may have excess He abundance outside the core compared to those made from binary mergers. This effect may be observable, particularly in ultraviolet colors. Most blue stragglers have been discovered in clusters sufficiently sparse that collisions are improbable, and there is direct evidence for binarity in several cases. However, the newly discovered blue straggler sequences in the cores of NGC 6397 and 47 Tuc show characteristics which may be more easily explained if they are formed from collisional mergers.

Hong Kong is an impact crater: Proof from the geomorphological and geological evidence

Hong Kong is a city in southern China. The urban districts of Hong Kong, Kowloon, and Victoria Harbour are situated within Hong Kong. Hong Kong is surrounded by mountains with a diameter of 11 km. Three million people live inside the basin. The round structure of the mountains in Hong Kong has been describd as a granite dome that is deeply eroded (batholith). The circularity of the mountains, the existence of a central hill, the inner slope of the mountains being greater than the outer slope, the presence of deep layer rock inside the basin, and the depth-to-diameter ratio were studied. All this evidence shows that the Hong Kong structure satisfies the geomorphological requirement of an impact crater. Some shock metamorphic phenomena of the rocks in Hong Kong such as planar features, microspherilitic silica glass (lechaterlierite), fused margins of rock fragments, concussion fractures, impact glass in which some schlierens are consistent with pyroxene spiculites, etc., were first discovered in Oct. 1990. In Hong Kong Island, an impact melt sheet was observed from the Victoria Peak to the southern shore. Quenching fractures of quartz in Kowloon fine-grained granite was also discovered. In our work, the K-Ar age (83.34 + 1.26 m.y.) of the impact melt rock, which is younger in comparison to the K-Ar age (117 m.y.) in Hong Kong and Kowloon granite, was measured, and the phenomena indicate that after the granite body formed, there was another geologic event. Maybe it is the Hong Kong cratering event.

Near-Earth asteroids: Observer alert network and physical observations

This project strives to obtain physical observations on newly discovered Near-Earth Objects (NEO's) in order to provide fundamental data needed to assess the resources available in the population. The goal is acquiring data on all objects brighter than magnitude V= 17.0. To accomplish this, an electronic mail alert and observer information service that informs observers around the world as to the status of physical observations on currently observable NEO's was established. Such data is also acquired ourselves through a cooperative program with European colleagues that uses telescopes on La Palma to obtain spectra of NEO's and through observations made from a local telescope on Tumamoc Hill. This latter telescope has the advantage that large amounts of observing time are available, so that whenever a new NEO's discovered, we can be assured of getting time to observe it.

Comparison of straight and 15 degree vectored nozzles using a six component thrust stand

This project compared the forces and moments produced by straight and 15 degree vectored nozzles. Using the six component thrust stand in the engines laboratory at California Polytechnic State University, several trials were performed. This data was then reduced using first a computer program and then later an electronic spreadsheet. This reduced data was graphed and compared. As a result of these comparisons some unexpected forces were discovered. Several more tests were run including a zero thrust test and a statistical comparison were done to discover the source of these discrepancies. As a direct result several nozzle changes were made and significant revisions to the thrust stand are being made.

Analysis of Uranian radio emissions, Uranus Data Analysis Program (UDAP)

Progress under this grant has included identifying certain new radio emission components and determining the source location of both these and the two major Uranian radio emission (the SHF and bursty components) by a unique new statistical minimization technique. This new source location technique has subsequently also been applied at Neptune, with considerable success. New radio spectrograms have been prepared to clarify the behavior of such emissions, using both the usual 48-second, log-averaged data and the original 6-second PRA data, the latter showing a number of interesting new features. Also, a plasmasphere was discovered at Uranus, auroral plasma cavities were discovered at both Uranus and Neptune, and it was found that the currently-accepted rotation period for Uranus is in error by a small amount.

Laminar-Boundary-Layer Oscillations and Transition on a Flat Plate

This is an account of an investigation in which oscillations were discovered in the laminar boundary layer along a flat plate. These oscillations were found during the course of an experiment in which transition from laminar to turbulent flow was being studied on the plate as the turbulence in the wind stream was being reduced to unusually low values by means of damping screens. The first part of the paper deals with experimental methods and apparatus, measurements of turbulence and sound, and studies of transition. A description is then given of the manner in which oscillations were discovered and how they were found to be related to transition, and then how controlled oscillations were produced and studied in detail.

Space Station maintenance studies using plaid graphics

The Graphics Analysis Facility (GRAF) has been used frequently to study extravehicular activity (EVA) maintenance scenarios on Space Station Freedom. The ability to use 3-dimensional visualization gives one a more accurate estimate of the Space Station environment. Moreover, human EVA and robotic kinematics can be accurately simulated for columetric reach and collision detection analysis. An animation of this kind was developed for a research group at JSC to study and discover problem areas involved with doing external Space Station maintenance tasks. On the EVA side, it was discovered that items such as handholds and temporary restraint mechanisms should more effectively facilitate EVA movement about the Space Station structure for the suited personnel. Issues concerning CETA cart configuration, PWP storage locations, and locations of EVA storage areas were also identified by use of the animation. In the area of EVA versus robotics, it was found that there is a strong desire to make EVA and robotics interfaces compatible on items such as replacement units and unpressurized logistics carriers. The animation also showed that the use of robotics within an EVA task increases the difficulty and duration of the task setup, leaving less time available for the maintenance task itself. Graphics animation provides a mechanism to simultaneously analyze several mission parameters (i.e., EVA reach, volumetric analysis, and task timelines), and thus, it has proven to be an effective method for mission evaluation.

Magnesian anorthosites from the western highlands of the Moon: Isotope geochemistry and petrogenesis

Breccias from the Apollo 14 landing site have provided a wealth of information on the genesis of the lunar highlands. Various pristine rock-types have been discovered in relative abundance including rare ferroan anorthosites and alkali-suite and magnesian-suite rocks. Mineral-chemical and radiogenic isotopic data are reported here for a newly discovered Mg-suite anorthosite from Apollo 14, sample 14303,347. Meyer et al. reported U-Pb zircon analyses of Mg-suite highlands rocks from the western limb of the Moon. We have compiled these ages and generated a weighted average age of 4211 = 6 Ma; some 200 Ma younger than ferroan anorthosites. Utilizing this age for Mg-anorthosite 14303,347, our data results in an initial epsilon(sub Nd) value of -1.0 and initial Sr-87/Sr-86 of 0.69915. Based on trace-element, isotopic, and mineral-chemical data, the western highlands Mg-suite is interpreted to be crustal precipitates of a picritic magma, which assimilated KREEPy trapped liquid from upper-mantle cumulates during its transport to the crust.

Trace-shortened Reed-Solomon codes

Reed-Solomon (RS) codes have been part of standard NASA telecommunications systems for many years. RS codes are character-oriented error-correcting codes, and their principal use in space applications has been as outer codes in concatenated coding systems. However, for a given character size, say m bits, RS codes are limited to a length of, at most, 2(exp m). It is known in theory that longer character-oriented codes would be superior to RS codes in concatenation applications, but until recently no practical class of 'long' character-oriented codes had been discovered. In 1992, however, Solomon discovered an extensive class of such codes, which are now called trace-shortened Reed-Solomon (TSRS) codes. In this article, we will continue the study of TSRS codes. Our main result is a formula for the dimension of any TSRS code, as a function of its error-correcting power. Using this formula, we will give several examples of TSRS codes, some of which look very promising as candidate outer codes in high-performance coded telecommunications systems.

TOPS: Toward Other Planetary Systems. A report by the solar system exploration division

This report describes a general plan and the pertinent technological requirements for TOPS (Toward Other Planetary Systems), a staged program to ascertain the prevalence and character of other planetary systems and to construct a definitive picture of the formation of stars and their planets. The first stages focus on discovering and studying a significant number of fully formed planetary systems, as well as expanding current studies of protoplanetary systems. As the TOPS Program evolves, emphasis will shift toward intensive study of the discovered systems and of individual planets. Early stages of the TOPS Program can be undertaken with ground-based observations and space missions comparable in scale to those now being performed. In the long term, however, TOPS will become an ambitious program that challenges our capabilities and provides impetus for major space initiatives and new technologies.

Soft gamma-ray repeaters: Black holes in giant molecular clouds?

The BATSE discovery of the near-simultaneous turnon of a soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) source, located to apporximately 5 deg and possibly SGR 1900+14, and a new hard X-ray transient GRS 1915+105 (discovered by Granat), suggests they may be associated. Published positions for both the SGR and GRS sources do not preclude spatial coincidence for the two sources, or the GRS transient may be associated with another SGR source. We outline a model for SGR sources as due to thermal instabilities in spherical accretion onto black holes in giant molecular clouds. We show that the SIGMA position for the GRS 1915 source is consistent with it being in a giant molecular cloud and compare this possible identification with that suggested for the `1E' source in the Galactic center region. Our model would predict a strong concentration of SGR sources toward the Galactic plane (consistent with both SGR 1900+14 and SGR 1806-20) and so would require the only other known 'SGR,' the GRB 790305 superburst source apparently in the Large Magellanic Cloud, to be fundamentally different. We note that the recently discovered radio/infrared counterpart for the SGR 1806-20 may be consistent with this model, rather than the compact suprernova remnant/pulsar model suggested by Kulkarni and Frail.
