Application of partial differential equation modeling of the control/structural dynamics of flexible spacecraft

Partial differential equations for modeling the structural dynamics and control systems of flexible spacecraft are applied here in order to facilitate systems analysis and optimization of these spacecraft. Example applications are given, including the structural dynamics of SCOLE, the Solar Array Flight Experiment, the Mini-MAST truss, and the LACE satellite. The development of related software is briefly addressed.

Deep transfer operator learning for partial differential equations under conditional shift

Transfer learning enables the transfer of knowledge gained while learning to perform one task (source) to a related but different task (target), hence addressing the expense of data acquisition and labelling, potential computational power limitations and dataset distribution mismatches. Here, we propose a new transfer learning framework for task-specific learning (functional regression in partial differential equations) under conditional shift based on the deep operator network (DeepONet). Task-specific operator learning is accomplished by fine-tuning task-specific layers of the target DeepONet using a hybrid loss function that allows for the matching of individual target samples while also preserving the global properties of the conditional distribution of the target data. Inspired by conditional embedding operator theory, we minimize the statistical distance between labelled target data and the surrogate prediction on unlabelled target data by embedding conditional distributions onto a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach for various transfer learning scenarios involving nonlinear partial differential equations under diverse conditions due to shifts in the geometric domain and model dynamics. Our transfer learning framework enables fast and efficient learning of heterogeneous tasks despite considerable differences between the source and target domains.

Learning emergent partial differential equations in a learned emergent space

We propose an approach to learn effective evolution equations for large systems of interacting agents. This is demonstrated on two examples, a well-studied system of coupled normal form oscillators and a biologically motivated example of coupled Hodgkin-Huxley-like neurons. For such types of systems there is no obvious space coordinate in which to learn effective evolution laws in the form of partial differential equations. In our approach, we accomplish this by learning embedding coordinates from the time series data of the system using manifold learning as a first step. In these emergent coordinates, we then show how one can learn effective partial differential equations, using neural networks, that do not only reproduce the dynamics of the oscillator ensemble, but also capture the collective bifurcations when system parameters vary. The proposed approach thus integrates the automatic, data-driven extraction of emergent space coordinates parametrizing the agent dynamics, with machine-learning assisted identification of an emergent PDE description of the dynamics in this parametrization.

Understanding machine learning approaches for partial differential equations

Recent works in computational physics have been successful in the super-resolution of numerical solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) via neural networks. In this paper we explore the possibilities and limitations of the data-driven discretization approach implemented by Bar-Sinai et. al., while contrasting it with a simpler yet weaker approach utilizing the nangs Python library. The results demonstrate what neural network parameters optimize accuracy and performance, as well as what conditions on PDEs are necessary to maintain convergence.

A hybrid Pade-Galerkin technique for differential equations

A three-step hybrid analysis technique, which successively uses the regular perturbation expansion method, the Pade expansion method, and then a Galerkin approximation, is presented and applied to some model boundary value problems. In the first step of the method, the regular perturbation method is used to construct an approximation to the solution in the form of a finite power series in a small parameter epsilon associated with the problem. In the second step of the method, the series approximation obtained in step one is used to construct a Pade approximation in the form of a rational function in the parameter epsilon. In the third step, the various powers of epsilon which appear in the Pade approximation are replaced by new (unknown) parameters (delta(sub j)). These new parameters are determined by requiring that the residual formed by substituting the new approximation into the governing differential equation is orthogonal to each of the perturbation coordinate functions used in step one. The technique is applied to model problems involving ordinary or partial differential equations. In general, the technique appears to provide good approximations to the solution even when the perturbation and Pade approximations fail to do so. The method is discussed and topics for future investigations are indicated.
