The Machine Learning Showroom: Presentation to OCIO Data Science Summit

Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) has become an indispensable tool for descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics. Demand for AI/ML models at NASA is outpacing Data Scientist staff. The AI/ML Showroom is an effort to empower NASA professionals to evaluate AI/ML solutions for their problems in a scalable self-help manner, relying on coding examples, reference use cases, digital assistant guides, jam sessions, video training, and pre-configured cloud resources.

Reducing the Volume of NASA Earth-Science Data

A computer program reduces data generated by NASA Earth-science missions into representative clusters characterized by centroids and membership information, thereby reducing the large volume of data to a level more amenable to analysis. The program effects an autonomous data-reduction/clustering process to produce a representative distribution and joint relationships of the data, without assuming a specific type of distribution and relationship and without resorting to domain-specific knowledge about the data. The program implements a combination of a data-reduction algorithm known as the entropy-constrained vector quantization (ECVQ) and an optimization algorithm known as the differential evolution (DE). The combination of algorithms generates the Pareto front of clustering solutions that presents the compromise between the quality of the reduced data and the degree of reduction. Similar prior data-reduction computer programs utilize only a clustering algorithm, the parameters of which are tuned manually by users. In the present program, autonomous optimization of the parameters by means of the DE supplants the manual tuning of the parameters. Thus, the program determines the best set of clustering solutions without human intervention.

Automatic cataloguing and characterization of Earth science data using SE-trees

In the future, NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) platforms will produce enormous amounts of remote sensing image data that will be stored in the EOS Data Information System. For the past several years, the Intelligent Data Management group at Goddard's Information Science and Technology Office has been researching techniques for automatically cataloguing and characterizing image data (ADCC) from EOS into a distributed database. At the core of the approach, scientists will be able to retrieve data based upon the contents of the imagery. The ability to automatically classify imagery is key to the success of contents-based search. We report results from experiments applying a novel machine learning framework, based on Set-Enumeration (SE) trees, to the ADCC domain. We experiment with two images: one taken from the Blackhills region in South Dakota; and the other from the Washington DC area. In a classical machine learning experimentation approach, an image's pixels are randomly partitioned into training (i.e. including ground truth or survey data) and testing sets. The prediction model is built using the pixels in the training set, and its performance is estimated using the testing set. With the first Blackhills image, we perform various experiments achieving an accuracy level of 83.2 percent, compared to 72.7 percent using a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and 65.3 percent using a Gaussain Maximum Likelihood Classifier (GMLC). However, with the Washington DC image, we were only able to achieve 71.4 percent, compared with 67.7 percent reported for the BPNN model and 62.3 percent for the GMLC.

Data products are sent to the TESS Science Operations Center (SOC) at MIT where they are disseminated to the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) and the TESS Science Office (TSO).

NASA Earth Science Data Systems: Open Data, Services and Software

Open, Public, Electronic and Necessary (OPEN) Government Data Act, which requires all non-sensitive government data to be made available in open and machine-readable formats by default is part of the overall Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking (FEBP) Act passed in late 2018. This town hall will bring together data officers and policy makers from NOAA, EPA, NASA and others to discuss the impact of the act on data management strategies going forward. In 1994 NASA's Earth Science Division committed to an open data policy for all civilian Earth satellite data. NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) became the first large scale data system to facilitate public access to global Earth system data and information. This presentation reviews key elements of EOSDIS data policy and data management activities that support the OPEN Government Data Act.

Sustainable Aviation Operations and the Role of Information Technology and Data Science: Background, Current Status and Future Directions

This paper reviews the achievements of the international community towards environmentally friendly aviation operations, also referred to as Sustainable Aviation Operations in the last 25 years and the aspirations and goals to limit the impact of aviation and climate in the future. The framework for achieving global progress is provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization. NASA and FAA supported research and development to advance ATM concepts, and implemented the technology, concepts, and procedures that were responsible for creating fuel efficient flights. Historically aviation operations have been analyzed using physics-based models and provide information for making operational decisions. Future developments in aviation operations require new concepts, procedure, modeling, and analysis techniques. There is an increasing interest in applying methods based on Machine Learning Techniques to problems in Air Traffic Management. Aviation operations involving many decision makers, multiple objectives, poor or unavailable physics-based models and the availability of a rich historical database provide opportunities to exploit the richness of data-driven methods. The promises and challenges in applying Machine Learning Techniques to Air Traffic Management are discussed in the paper along with the testing and trustworthiness required for adoption of the techniques in operations.

Improving NASA Earth Science Data and Information Access Through Natural Language Processing Based Data Analysis and Visualization

NASA: The Research Access initiative is part of the agency's framework for increasing public access to scientific publications and digital scientific data. The initiative follows the release of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's (OSTP) memorandum "Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Research," to ensure federally funded research is available to the public within one year of publication. NASA answered the mandate by creating an agency plan entitled "NASA Plan for Increasing Access to the Results of Scientific Research" and associated policy, NPD 2230.1, Research Data and Publication Access. Principles in NASA SMD Strategic Plan for Scientific Data and Computing: Continued free and open access to scientific data for any use. Improved ease of use and discoverability. Enhanced science applications and new use cases. Incorporates best practices and "state of the art" through partnerships. Earth Data and Systems are Evolving: Increasing archive and file sizes. More complicated data structures. More user-friendly and data services. What is the future direction?

The Kepler Science Data Processing Pipeline Source Code Road Map

We give an overview of the operational concepts and architecture of the Kepler Science Processing Pipeline. Designed, developed, operated, and maintained by the Kepler Science Operations Center (SOC) at NASA Ames Research Center, the Science Processing Pipeline is a central element of the Kepler Ground Data System. The SOC consists of an office at Ames Research Center, software development and operations departments, and a data center which hosts the computers required to perform data analysis. The SOC's charter is to analyze stellar photometric data from the Kepler spacecraft and report results to the Kepler Science Office for further analysis. We describe how this is accomplished via the Kepler Science Processing Pipeline, including, the software algorithms. We present the high-performance, parallel computing software modules of the pipeline that perform transit photometry, pixel-level calibration, systematic error correction, attitude determination, stellar target management, and instrument characterization.

A guide to the National Space Science Data Center

This is the second edition of a document that was published to acquaint space and Earth research scientists with an overview of the services offered by the NSSDC. As previously stated, the NSSDC was established by NASA to be the long term archive for data from its space missions. However, the NSSDC has evolved into an organization that provides a multitude of services for scientists throughout the world. Brief articles are presented which discuss these services. At the end of each article is the name, address, and telephone number of the person to contact for additional information. Online Information and Data Systems, Electronic Access, Offline Data Archive, Value Added Services, Mass Storage Activities, and Computer Science Research are all detailed.
